Episode 74: “Neo Destiny”
“Alright folks!” Jaden Yuki announced to the assembled crowed in the Ra Yellow Arena. “It’s time to begin the Semifinals of the Duelist Academy Grand Championship! First, let’s introduce our four duelists!
“First, we have Sophia Broman, Dragon Deck user, and cousin of the King of Games!” Sophia walked onto the arena, flashing a peace sign to the crowd.
“Next up is Aster Phoenix, Destiny Hero Master and Pro Tour Duelist!” Phoenix took his place beside Sophia, not giving any attention to the crowd.
“Now we have Joe Malia, wielder of the Neo Spacians!” Joe leapt onto the arena punching the air and blowing kisses to the female crowd until Sophia dragged him back into the line.
“Finally, the self-proclaimed Cyber Master, Hell Kaiser” Jaden finished with a snarl as the black trench coat wearing villain walked onto the arena, ignoring his competitors and the booing crowd.
Jaden quickly reverted to his cheerful attitude. “This round we will have a new way of choosing the duels. The computer randomly will choose one duelist and that duelist will pick his opponent. However, that duel will be the second one played.”
Greg just stared at Jaden. What the heck is Jaden thinking?! Hell Kaiser will get chosen and then he’s gonna pick either Sophia or Joe, people who mean a lot to me. This plan is suicide!
Everyone looked at the screen, which was displaying the names of the four duelists. After Jaden pressed the button, Joe’s name immediately vanished from the list. After a minute, Aster’s name was gone as well, leaving two. Then, after another minute, Hell Kaiser was the last name standing.
Jaden scowled and turned to the lucky man. “Okay Hell Kaiser, choose your opponent.”
Hell Kaiser didn’t even hesitate. “Sophia”
Sophia nodded grimly. Greg visibly paled.
Jaden nodded. “Okay then, the first match of the semifinals will be between Aster Phoenix and Joe Malia!”
The two duelists ascended the steps and stood on the dueling platform. “This is it” Joe breathed as he shuffled his deck.
Aster nodded and slid his now shuffled deck into his duel disk. “One of us has to lose.”
Joe slid his deck into his deck as well. “And that person…will be you!”
The two duelists activated their duel disks and shouted. “LET’S DUEL!”
Joe – 8000 Aster – 8000
The two duelists drew five cards. Joe had Fake Hero, Quick Summon, Neo Spacian Air Hummingbird, Neo Spacian Aqua Dolphin, and Neo Space. Aster had Destiny Hero Dogma, Soul Exchange, Destiny Hero Disk Commander, Monster Reborn, and Graceful Charity. Joe went first.
Joe drew his opening card silently. (Field Barrier) “I summon Neo Spacian Air Hummingbird to the field!” Once he had materialized, the bird-man began sucking nectar out of the flowers Aster’s cards had become. “And once per turn, I can use its ability to gain 400 LP for every card in your hand!”
Joe – 10000 Aster – 8000
“Now I activate Quick Summon! This card allows me to summon another monster, so come on out Neo Spacian Aqua Dolphin!” In a flash of light, the blue dolphin-man appeared. “Now I activate Fake Hero! This lets me summon my Elemental Hero Neos!” In another flash of light, everyone’s favorite silver hero appeared between the aliens. “Now, go Contact Fusion! I send my three monsters to my deck to Fusion Summon Elemental Hero Storm Neos! (3000 ATK)” The blue-bodied, claw and wing wielding Fusion Monster floated down in front of Joe. “Now I activate Neo Space!” As the new card was placed in the Field Spell slot in the duel disk, the background was plunged in a vortex of multi-colored light. “This gives my Neos and its Fusions an extra 500 ATK! (Storm Neos: (3500 ATK) That ends my turn.”
“Nice opening turn for Joe” Violet remarked.
“Knowing Aster, let’s hope it keeps going” Johan replied.
Greg just nodded.
Aster drew his next card. (Destiny Hero Diamond Dude) “I activate Graceful Charity! This lets me draw three cards (Pot of Greed, Polymerization, and Destiny Hero Malicious) and discard two (Destiny Heroes Malicious and Disk Commander). Now I activate Monster Reborn to bring back Destiny Hero Disk Commander, allowing me to draw two more cards in the process (Destiny Hero Blade Master and Elemental Hero Avian)! Then I activate Pot of Greed to draw two cards (Destiny Hero Plasma and Necro Gardna) Next, I’ll remove Malicious from the game to summon another one from my deck! Now I’ll activate Soul Exchange! Whenever I tribute monsters to summon a monster, I can use your Storm Neos instead of one of my own monsters! Now, by sacrificing our three monsters to summon Destiny Hero Dogma! (3400 ATK) In a flash of light, the three monsters of the field vanished and their place cam the dark armored Hero with its sword arm and wings. “Now my monster, attack Joe directly! Destiny Sword Slash!”
The Destiny Hero flew directly act Joe and slashed the sword across his mid-section, causing him to drop on one knee as his LP went down.
Joe – 6600 Aster – 8000
“I end my turn” Aster said, folding his arms as Dogma floated back down him front of him.
Raising himself to stand on both feet, Joe drew his next card…only to drop back to his knees as a phantom sword passed through him, thanks of Dogma’s ability.
Joe – 3300 Aster – 8000
Getting to his feet, Joe looked as his draw card: Card of Sanctity. “I activate Card of Sanctity! This lets us draw cards until we have six in our hands (Neo Spacian Grand Mole, Elemental Hero Neos, Neo Spacian Flare Scarab, Pot of Greed, and Monster Reborn).
“Smart.” Kai remarked. “Aster won’t benefit because he already has six cards in his hand.”
“Joe’s got more options now” Mars agreed.
Down below, Joe was continuing with his turn. “Now I activate Pot of Greed to draw two more cards. (Graceful Charity and Premature Burial) Next, I activate Graceful Charity to draw three cards. (Quick Summon, Neo Spacian Glow Moss, and Neo Spacian Dark Panther) and discard two (Neo Spacians Dark Panther and Elemental hero Neos). Now I summon Neo Spacian Grand Mole to the field in ATK Mode!” In a flash of light, the furry brown mole with a drill collar appeared. “Now attack Dogma!”
“Why?!” Mars exclaimed. “He’ll just kill himself even more.
For the first time that match, Greg spoke. “Watch”
Grand Mole’s two drill halves joined together, completely covering his head as he leapt at the monster.
Aster smirked. “Dogma, counterattack with Destiny Sword Slash!”
The hulking brute sped towards the flying mini projectile, sword raised…
Only to vanish when the two made contact.
“WHAT?!” Aster exclaimed.
Joe smirked. “Oh yeah, Grand Mole has an ability: when he battles a monster, I take no battle damage as a result of the battle and the two monsters are return to our hands.”
Aster sighed and asked, “Are you done?”
“Nope. I’ll enter my Second Main Phase and activate Quick Summon so I can summon my Neo Spacian Flare Scarab! Next I activate another Quick Summon to re-summon Grand Mole. Now I activate Monster Reborn to bring back Elemental Hero Neos! Now I initiate Contact Fusion! To send my three monsters back to my deck to summon Elemental Hero Magma Neos! (3000 + 500 ATK) The new Hero had a silver body, rock-like arms and legs, and his hands seemed to be made of fire. Spikes were growing out of his legs.
“Now I end my turn” Joe finished with a smirk.
Aster drew his next card. (D-Formation) “I activate D-Formation, whose abilities I’ll keep a secret for now. Next I’ll change the scenery by activating Dark City!”
As Aster slipped the card into the Field Spell Card slot, the vortex background exploded into pixels and dark skyscrapers rose around the duelists.
Joe’s smirk had changed to a scowl.
“Since, Neo Space was destroyed, your monster loses its ATK bonus. (Magma: 3000 ATK)” Aster continued. “Now, I summon Destiny Hero Diamond Dude! (1600 DEF) Thanks to his ability, I can reveal the top card of my deck and if it’s a Normal Spell Card, I can discard it and activate it next turn without cost, and my Magical Stone Excavation fits the bill nicely. Next, I’ll remove Malicious from the game to summon my third one from my deck in DEF mode (800 DEF). Than ends my turn, which means your Magma Neos goes away since Neo Space is gone!”
Joe strangely smiled as he watched his monster disappear. “Yeah, but thanks to his ability, all your cards on the field go back to your hand.”
Aster just stared as the two monsters he had out left the field and as the skyscrapers surrounding them disappeared.
Joe drew his next card. (Trash to Treasure) “I activate Trash to Treasure! By shuffling the 11 cards in my graveyard back to my deck, I can draw that many cards! (Spacia Gift, Cocoon Party, Contact, Miracle Contact, Fake Hero, Card Destruction, Neo Spacian Dark Panther, Neo Spacian Flare Scarab, Neo Spacian Air Hummingbird, Neo Spacian Glow Moss, Neo Spacian Aqua Dolphin) Now I set four cards (Spacia Gift, Cocoon Party, Contact, and Fake Hero) facedown and activate Card Destruction! This card makes us both discard our hands and draw that many cards! (Joe: Pot of Avarice, Elemental Hero Neos, Neo Space, Solemn Judgment, Cocoon Veil, and Contact Convert. Aster: D-Chain, Destiny Mirage, Destiny Fusion, Mystical Space Typhoon, Clock Tower Prison, and Destiny Hero Dreadmaster) Next, I’ll send us back to the Twilight Zone by activating Neo Space! Now I activate Spacia Gift! Since I have five Neo Spacians in my graveyard, I can summon up to five ‘Chrysalis’ monsters from my deck: Chrysalis Chicky, Chrysalis Dolphin, Chrysalis Larva, Chrysalis Pantail, and Chrysalis Pinny.” The five new monsters were all encased in a pink web but there was a different being inside them: a chick, dolphin, caterpillar, kitten, and glowing blob respectively. “Next, I activate Pot of Avarice! By shuffling Neo Spacians Air Hummingbird, Flare Scarab, Dark Panther, Aqua Dolphin, and Glow Moss back into my deck, I can draw two more cards. (NEX and Spacial Fusion) Next I activate my Contact card! By sending all the monsters on my side of the field to the graveyard, I can summon their grown-up versions to the field: Dark Panther (1000 ATK), Air Hummingbird (800 ATK), Glow Moss (300 ATK), Flare Scarab (500 ATK), and Aqua Dolphin (600 ATK)!” Dark Panther was, like the name described, a black panther wearing a cape, Glow Moss was a glowing alien-like being, and Flare Scarab was a scarab beetle with a human face and that walked on two legs.
“What’s Joe planning?” Johan wondered. “He’s amassed a large force, but Aster can take it down in seconds!
“Let’s just keep watching” Sophia replied.
“Now I sacrifice Dark Panther and Glow Moss to summon Elemental Hero Neos!” Joe punched the air as his monster floated beside him. “Now I activate Fake Hero to summon another Neos!” In another flash, a second Hero stood on the field. “Next, I activate the ability of Aqua Dolphin and look at your hand!”
Aster sighed and showed Joe his six card hand. Joe glanced at all of them until he hit Dreadmaster. He smiled. “Dreadmaster gets sent to the grave, and you take 500 damage!”
Joe – 3300 Aster – 7500
“Now I Contact Fuse Neos and Flare Scarab to summon Elemental Hero Flare Neos! (2500 à 3000 ATK) Next, I do the same with Neos and Air Hummingbird to summon Elemental Hero Air Neos! (2500 ATK à 3000 ATK)” Flare Neos had black and orange armor and black wings. Air Neos had a red body and white feather wings.
“Both my Fusions here have special abilities. Flare Neos gains 400 ATK for every Spell/Trap on the field (3000 à 3800 ATK). Air Neos’ ATK gets increased by the difference between our LP (3000 à 7200 ATK).”
Greg gasped. “Its over!”
Violet’s mouth dropped open. “He managed to come back?!”
Joe smiled. “Aqua Dolphin, attack! Sonar Wave!
The dolphin-man opened its mouth and shrieked, making ripples of sound to crash into Aster. (Air Neos: 7200 à 6700 ATK)
Joe – 3300 Aster – 7000
“Air Neos, direct attack! Wind Feather Cascade!”
The bird-man leapt into the air and flapped his wings, sending razor-sharp feathers into Aster, making him fall to his knees.
Joe – 3300 Aster – 300
Joe tilted his head back, leaning back slightly and positioned his elbows so they were pointing towards his hips as he gave his triumphant cry to the heavens: “FLARE NEOS, DIRECT ATTACK! FINISH HIM OFF WITH SOLAR POWER WAVE!”
Flare Neos leapt into the air and gathered a ball of fire between his hands. He pushed it towards Aster. When it made contact, a fiery explosion ripped apart Aster’s side of the arena, obscuring the duelist from view.
Joe began laughing. “I did it! I won!”
“Not quite” came Aster’s voice.
Joe looked: as the dust settled, Aster was standing there, with his LP intact and a smile on his face.
“WHAT?!?!” Joe exploded. “HOW?!?!”
Aster chuckled. “A gift from Jaden: Necro Gardna. You discarded it thanks to Card Destruction. I can remove it from my graveyard from the game to negate one of your attacks. That’s how I stayed alive.”
Joe snarled. “I end my turn”
Aster drew his next card. (Destiny Hero Captain Tenacious) “I activate Destiny Fusion! By discarding my Captain Tenacious and removing Plasma and Dogma from the game, I can summon my ultimate monster: DRAGOON D-END! (3000 ATK)”
Aster’s only Destiny Hero fusion was a site to see: he had blood red wings, a sword arm and a dragon head arm similar to Flame Wingman. His helmet was spiked. He had maroon armor and a dragon head coming out of his stomach. Spikes erupted from his body in odd places.
Joe looked up and paled. “Oh…crap…”
“Now my monster, destroy Aqua Dolphin with Dragon Force Blast!” Aster called.
The monster raised its dragon arm and unleashed a purple fire at the dolphin-man, blasting him apart and driving Joe to his knees.
Joe – 800 Aster – 300
Joe struggled to his feet. “I’m…still…here…” he panted.
Aster smiled. “No you’re not. I activate my monster’s special ability! I can destroy your Air Neos and then your take damage equal to half its ATK!”
Joe bowed his head, smiling. “Great duel, man.”
Aster smiled in return. “Thanks. Dragoon D-End, do your thing!”
Dragoon D-End jumped into the air and raised his sword. After hanging there for a moment, he plummeted down, cleaving Air Neos in half, creating another explosion. Joe collapsed to the floor as his remaining LP vanished.
Joe – 0 Aster – 300
Joe got back to his feet as the dust cleared. “It’s a good thing you did that then Aster.” He said. “Because, if you hadn’t I would’ve won.”
Aster cocked his head. “How?”
Joe smiled and held up his Spacial Fusion card. “With this” He explained. “By destroying all monsters on my side of the field, I could remove cards from my deck and/or my graveyard from the game to summon a Neos Fusion. I would be able to summon Chaos Neos and thanks to Neo Space, I would’ve taken you and your monstrosity down.”
Aster cringed, thinking of the implications of that move.
Joe cracked a grin. “Take care of yourself, Aster. Hopefully, we’ll meet again.”
As Joe left the arena, Violet looked at Greg. “You okay?”
Greg just stared at the retreating figure. “I don’t know Vi, I don’t know.”
