Episode 71: “Facing Your Past”
Zane Truesdale was standing on the Duelist Academy roof. It had become his favorite spot every since Christy went into a Hell Coma. He spent all his time here, making his deck and strong as he could to take out Hell Kaiser.
I’ve gone through my deck with a fine tooth comb and I’ve added a bunch of cards, but there is still something missing! What is it?!
Suddenly, the door behind his opened. Turning around, he saw Greg. “Hey”
Greg smiled. “Can I cut in?”
Zane chuckled. “What did you say to me last time? Oh yeah: sure, it’s a free roof!”
Greg joined in the laughing and he stood next to Zane. They stood in silence watching the sun set.
“The second round began” Greg said.
“I heard…and felt” Zane replied. “What the heck was going on down there?”
Greg smiled…but it was laced with sadness. “Sophia and Violet dueling”
“So pretty much it was a battle that I should’ve seen”
“Oh yeah. A monster with infinite attack against a monster that is kamikaze incarnate? Definitely a good duel!”
They were silent for a moment and then Greg said “I think I know whose next up”
Zane looked at him. “Who?”
Greg stared grimly back. “You and Hell Kaiser”
Zane was taken aback. “How do you know?!”
“Hell Kaiser’s broken into the Duel Academy computers. He wants revenge. You’re target number one”
Zane looked down. “I can’t do it Greg”
Greg grabbed Zane’s shoulders and shook him. “Don’t talk like that! You’re Zane Truesdale, Cyber Master! You’ve been through hell and back! You’ve taken all comers! You’ve withstood the evil of the Orichalcos! And…” Greg’s voice broke here. “You’re the brother I never had Zane. Nobody, aside from Violet, understands me like you do. When we duel, we’re so evenly matched that we fight till the last card! I win mostly by luck, but you’ve got more skill than I do. Zane, promise me this: win this tournament. I want one final rematch. I want you to give me all you got!”
Zane looked down for a second and then looked at Greg. “Greg…thank you for believing in me…and I promise to win this tournament”
Greg nodded and let go of Zane, who said “I guess I better go down and get ready” Zane turned and walked towards the door. When he got there, he stopped because Greg spoke again.
“Wait”
Zane turned once more. Greg was still facing the sunset. But with one difference: he was holding a card in his right hand.
“Here” Greg said and he flung the card he was holding at Zane, who caught it and looked at it. “You’re going to need Overload Fusion for it, but this monster can help you”
Zane looked at the card and slowly smiled. THIS is what I was looking for! “Thanks Greg!” Zane said and this time, he walked through the door and down the stairs, leaving Greg all alone on the roof.

“Ladies and Gentlemen!” Jaden called out to the audience assembled in the arena. “It is time to choose the next two duelists who will fight in this round. We have just seen Sophia defeat Violet. Who will be next?” All eyes turned to the large screen, onto which six names appeared” Aster, Zane, Hell Kaiser, Tyranno, Joe, and Kai. Jaden pressed a button and the names began to disappear. Joe and Kai were first. Then Tyranno was eliminated, leaving Hell Kaiser, Zane, and Aster. As soon as he saw this, Zane began walking towards the dueling platform as did Hell Kaiser.
Greg narrowed his eyes at this. So…Hell Kaiser, you DID hack into the system…
With a beep, Aster’s name was eliminated. Jaden turned to the crowd. “This next match-up in the second round will be Zane versus Hell Kaiser!” The crowd roared with approval as Zane and Hell Kaiser equipped themselves with Hell Kaiser’s instruments of torture.
Zane and Hell Kaiser shuffled their decks. “You fool…” Hell Kaiser said in a carrying whisper. “Don’t you know what you’re up against?”
“My past” Zane shot back as he inserted his deck into his duel disk. “My enemy”
“Ready to join your girlfriend?” sneered Hell Kaiser as he inserted his deck as well.
“You’ll pay for that” As one, both opponents activated their duel disks.
“DUEL!”
Zane – 8000 Hell Kaiser – 8000
The two duelists drew their opening hands. Zane had Cyber Dragon, Polymerization, Cyber Vary, De-Fusion, and Barrier of Flash-Shining Force. Hell Kaiser had Infernal Dragon, Axe Dragonite, Exploder Dragon, Mirror Force, and Cyber Vary. Hell Kaiser went first.
“Draw!” Hell Kaiser said. He looked at his new card: Dragon’s Mirror. “I summon Infernal Dragon in DEF mode! (0 DEF)” A black dragon with dark armor and a sword appeared crouching on the field. “I then set one card facedown (Mirror Force) and end my turn”
Zane drew his next card. (Cyber Dragon) “Since you have a monster and I don’t, I get to Special Summon my Cyber Dragon! (2100 ATK)” The famous silver mechanical dragon appear on the field in front of Zane. “I now Normal Summon my Cyber Vary!” A smaller version of Cyber Dragon with a darker color and spikes appeared on the field as well. “And now I’ll activate its ability! By removing it from the game, I get to draw two cards! (Instant Fusion and Cyber Dragon) Now I activate Polymerization! I fuse my two Cyber Dragons together to summon Cyber Twin Dragon! (2800 ATK)”
Two Cyber Dragons were sucked into a swirling vortex. When the new creature emerged, it looked like the original Cyber Dragon except that it had two heads.
“Cyber Twin Dragon attack! Double Strident Blast!”
The dragon reared its head and unleashed two bursts of light blue electricity at the opponent’s dragon, destroying it in seconds.
“By dragon has an ability as well: it can attack twice! Cyber Twin Dragon, Double Strident Blast!”
The dragon attacked again, knocking Hell Kaiser off his feet and triggering the devices he wore, making red lightning strike his body.
Zane – 8000 Hell Kaiser – 5200
Hell Kaiser rose shakily to his feet. “You’ll pay for that next turn” he growled.
“There won’t be a next turn!” Zane shot back. “I activate De-Fusion! This splits my dragon back into its separate parts!” Sure enough, two Cyber Dragons appeared on the field, replacing the fusion monster. “Cyber Dragons, attack with Strident Blast!”
The dragons unleashed their streams of electricity which connected with its target, again knocking him onto his back and triggering the devices.
Zane – 8000 Hell Kaiser – 1000
Hell Kaiser stayed on one knee. “I’m…not…done…” he growled, panting.
“Neither am I!” Zane replied. “I activate Instant Fusion!” Another vortex appeared behind Zane, along with all three of his Cyber Dragons.
“He’s gonna summon it!” Greg said. All of Team Evolution leaned over the observation deck rail to get a better look.
“I fuse my three dragons together to summon my greatest beast…BEHOLD, THE CYBER END DRAGON! (4000 ATK)”
The three dragons entered the vortex. What came out was a beauty: A Cyber Dragon with three heads and wings, crackling with blue lightning.
“THIS ONE’S FOR CHRISTY!” roared Zane. “STRIDENT BLAZE ATTACK!”
The mechanical hydra unleashed three bolts of blue electricity towards Hell Kaiser…only to reverse course and destroy the caster!
“WHAT HAPPENED?!” Zane roared in shock.
Hell Kaiser rose to his feet laughing. “Do you really think I’d go that easily? I knew all along you were going to summon him this turn, so I set this card as a precaution: Mirror Force! This will destroy all your attack position monsters upon activation!”
Zane lowered his head. “I end my turn”
“Man…” Greg said. “Poor Zane…he almost had him…”
“Yeah now his best monster’s gone!”
“My turn!” Hell Kaiser announced. “Draw! (Pot of Greed) “I activate Pot of Greed, so I draw two cards. (Card Destruction and De-Fusion) I set one card facedown (De-Fusion) and then I’ll activate my Card Destruction! Normally we both discard cards and then we draw the same amount, but since you have no cards in your hand, it only applies to me! So I discard four cards to draw four! (Cyberdark Horn, Cyberdark Edge, Cyberdark Keel, and Polymerization) I now activate Polymerization to fuse Cyberdark Horn, Cyberdark Edge, and Cyberdark Keel together to form Cyberdark Dragon! (1000 ATK)”
Another vortex appeared on the field, this time behind Hell Kaiser. The three said monsters vanished inside the vortex and became a large metallic dragon with black, silver, dark gray armor with spikes.
“Now I’ll activate its ability!” crowed Hell Kaiser. “I can take one Dragon-Type in my grave and equip it to Cyberdark Dragon, increasing my monster’s ATK by the ATK of the equipped monster!”
Phantom images of all the dragon monsters in Hell Kaiser’s graveyard appeared behind him. The image of Axe Dragonite solidified and allowed dark cables to attach it to Cyberdark Dragon. (1000 ATK à 3000 ATK)
“And my Cyberdark Dragon also gains 100 ATK for every monster in my graveyard, giving it a grand total of 3500 ATK! Cyberdark Dragon, attack him now! Full Darkness Blast!”
The large metallic behemoth reared its head and unleashed a torrent of dark red fire that hit Zane square in the chest. He managed to stay on his feet, but just barely.
Zane – 4500 Hell Kaiser – 1000
“Now I activate De-Fusion! Now my Dragon is split into its three parts! (800 ATK each)”
Sure enough, the large dragon split into his separate parts. Horn looked like a Cyber Dragon with dark armor with spikes. Edge looked like a giant moth. Keel looked like a black Cyber Dragon.
“And thanks to his ability, I can equip my Exploder Dragon to Cyberdark Horn, increasing its ATK to 1800! Now my monsters, ATTACK!”
“Thanks for the De-Fusion Spell Hell Kaiser!” Zane called out. “Because now I activate Shining Mirror Force! This Trap card only works when you have three or more monsters on the field and when you are attacking. Upon activation, my Trap destroys all your monsters!”
Each of the three metallic brutes imploded, causing the smoke to roll over Hell Kaiser. He coughed and growled, “Darn you Zane! You’ll pay for that!”
“Send me the bill” Zane retorted and he drew his next card. (Pot of Greed) “I now activate my Pot of Greed! This lets me draw two new cards. (Fusion Reconstruction and Negate Attack) Now I activate Fusion Reconstruction! By paying half my LP…”
Zane – 2450 Hell Kaiser – 1000
“I can summon one Fusion monster from my grave so raise Cyber End Dragon! (4000 ATK)” Once more the large tri-headed dragon rose behind Zane. “However, Fusion Reconstruction costs me my Battle Phase, so I’ll set one card facedown (Negate Attack) and end my turn”
Hell Kaiser drew his next card. (Pot of Avarice) “I activate Pot of Avarice! By sending my Cyberdark Keel, Cyberdark Edge, Cyberdark Horn, Infernal Dragon, and Exploder Dragon back to my deck and shuffling it, I can draw two new cards! (Future Fusion and Overload Fusion)” With just one look at his new cards, he started to roar with laughter.
“Uh oh…” Greg muttered. “This isn’t good”
The rest of Team Evolution just nodded. They were ashen-faced and tight-lipped, focusing on the duel below.
Zane sighed. “Well, play your cards. I know you want to”
Hell Kaiser grinned evilly. “Oh you’re going to wish you never said that. I activate Future Fusion! By sending my 20 machines from my deck to the graveyard, I can summon a powerful creature in two turns…but why wait? I ACTIVATE OVERLOAD FUSION!”
As Hell Kaiser held the card in the air, wave of pulsating dark energy went out in all directions. Zane growled as he crossed his arms in front of his face.
“I REMOVE ALL THE MACHINES IN MY GRAVEYARD FROM THE GAME TO SUMMON MIGHTY CHIMERATECH OVERDRAGON! (???? ATK)
The beast that emerged behind Hell Kaiser was a scary one. It looked like a Cyber End Dragon, except that it had no wings and twenty-one different heads, and they were all glaring at Zane!
Hell Kaiser laughed out loud. “You feel it Zane? You feel your impending doom?”
“Just hurry up” Zane snarled.
“Since I used 21 different machines to create my monster, it gains 800 ATK for every monster I used to summon it and it can attack 21 times!”
“That means it has 16800 ATK!!” Greg exclaimed.
“HOLY ____!!!!” Joe swore at the top of his lungs, causing Johan to bend down, pick up some duck tape, and stick some on his mouth.
“That ought to shut you up” he said good-naturedly, patting his shoulder as Joe gave him death glares.
Hell Kaiser smiled evilly. “CHIMERATECH OVERDRAGON, FINISH HIM OFF! INFINITE STRIDENT BLAZE!!!”
The twenty-one heads each unleashed electric-blue energy…
“Hold on!” Zane called out. “I activate my Negate Attack! Your attacks are negated and your battle phase ends!”
Hell Kaiser sighed. “Just take your last turn”
Zane drew his next card. (Cyber Draw) “I activate my Cyber Draw! By sending one monster with ‘Cyber’ in its name from my deck to the grave, like my Cyber Phoenix, I can draw cards equal to the level of the discarded monster, so that’s four cards! (Cyber Fusion, Cybernetic Zone, Future Fusion, Limiter Removal) I now activate Future Fusion to send my 20 machine in my deck to the graveyard.”
Here Zane hesitated and closed his eyes. Greg, Christy…my friends and loved ones…this is for you! I now activate Cyber Fusion! I remove the 25 machines in my graveyard from the game to summon CHIMERATECH FORTRESS DRAGON! (???? ATK)
Greg smiled. You go bro!
The arena started shaking, bits of plaster falling from the ceiling. Behind Zane an enormously long mechanical dragon appeared with 24 closed doors along its body. It had a bluish color.
“For each fusion monster used to summon him, Fortress Dragon gains 1000 points, making his ATK 25000” Zane explained. “Even better, when a Machine-type monster is summoned by Cyber Fusion, its ATK is doubled! (50000 ATK)”
“YES!!” Johan yelled. “HE CAN TAKE THIS FREAKSHOW DOWN!!”
“No I can’t” Zane said dejectedly.
“You can’t?!” Johan repeated. Then he grinned and laughed. “Ha ha Zane, good one!”
“I’m not joking” Zane replied.
“WHAT?!?!” Team Evolution rose to their feet. Greg began descending the stairs.
“A monster summon by Cyber Fusion can’t attack the turn its summoned” Zane explained calmly.
“But that means…” Violet railed off.
“Hell Kaiser has one last chance to finish him off” Sophia said grimly.
“Wait a minute, where’s Greg?” Violet asked looking around.
“There!” Kai called pointing to the figure halfway down the ladder.
“Hey Greg wait up!” Johan called and began to descend as well. Sophia, Joe, Violet, and Kai soon followed.
“Draw!” roared Hell Kaiser, another wave of darkness energy emanating from him. He looked at his new card and smiled. “I ACTIVATE CYBERDARK POWER BOOST!”
“NO!” Greg yelled. He jumped off the ladder, fell about 5 feet, hit the floor in a crouch, and began pushing people out of the way. But he knew he was too late.
“THIS SPELL CARD DOUBLES MY OVERDRAGON’S ATTACK POWER FOR EVERY MONSTER WITH ‘CYBERDARK’ IN ITS NAME THAT’S REMOVED FROM PLAY!” Hell Kaiser roared as his beast was surrounded with a dark aura.
“That means it has 268800 ATK!!!” Johan exclaimed as he reached the bottom.
Sophia, Violet, and Kai swore and began to run with Johan right behind them. Joe just stood at the base of the ladder in shock.
“CHIMERATECH OVERDRAGON, OBLITERATE HIM!!!” Hell Kaiser hollered, pointing at Zane.
The first head unleashed its blast, destroying the monster. Zane went flying off the arena and into the wall, leaving an imprint. Red bolts of lightning attacked his body.
The other heads unleashed their blasts at the prone figure on the ground…
Until five figures intercepted the blast with their own energy.
Zane opened a drooping eyelid to see Elemental Heroes Avian, Burstinatrix, Sparkman, Clayman, and Bubbleman unleashing their powers at his incoming doom. In between him and them, was Greg, his tri-colored eyes glowing and his duel disk activated.
“G-Greg?” Zane muttered.
Greg didn’t look at him. “Sophia, Violet help Zane get out of here. Johan, Kai start evacuating the arena. It’s not going to hold. People could get killed”
“What about you?” Sophia demanded, already knowing the answer.
“I’ve got to stay here and keep the blast in check. Once everyone leaves, I’ll release it”
“But the blast…it’ll kill you!” Violet exclaimed, tears threatening to fall.
“Vi…” Greg hesitated. His hand drifted toward his pocket…
“N-No”
Greg turned. Zane had managed to prop himself against the wall. He looked like someone had taken him and run him over multiple times with a steamroller.
“Greg, get out of here” he ground out. “I don’t need you to go all noble on me”
“Forget it” Greg snapped. “You’re like my brother Zane. I’m not letting you get hurt when I can stop it”
“But what about Violet? If you go, her heart will be torn apart” Zane whispered. “What about Sophia?” If you go, she’ll have no family. What about the world? If you go, Hell Kaiser will destroy it. Besides,” here Zane smiled faintly. “This way I can see Christy again”
Greg stared at him for a minute then nodded. “Alright. New plan. Sophia, Violet, help the others evacuate the building. I’ll keep up the power. Once you’re done, I think I can buy us five minutes to clear out." The duo nodded and ran off.
It took about 20 minutes of swearing, yelling, and a few fights before the arena was cleared. Team Evolution members were standing guard at each exist. Somehow Greg had kept up his shield and Hell Kaiser was peeved.
“Greg we’re done!” Sophia hollered. “Now give us that safety net and let’s get the heck out of here!”
“Hold on!” Greg yelled in return. He took out another card and placed it in the field card spot. Suddenly White skyscrapers in a futuristic city emerged from the floor: Hero City.
“Zane, this scene should protect you from the debris.” Greg explained to the exhausted man. “This is the best I can do”
Zane managed a weak smile. “Thanks bro”
Greg gripped his shoulder and bolted from the arena. “GET DOWN!” He hollered as he grabbed Violet and Sophia and dropped to the ground outside. One second later, a colossal explosion rocked the very earth.

Inside the arena, Zane watched as the enormous blast came closer. I’m coming Christy…
The mechanical dragon’s attack finally broke through the Heroes’ power wall. It obliterated them as smashed into the city, reducing it to rubble, creating a giant explosion that caused the roof to fall in. But Zane was safe: the city’s ruins shielded him from the plaster and beams.
Only when the earthquake stopped did Zane Truesdale slip into unconsciousness…
