Episode 72: “Destiny’s Way”
Greg was sitting under a tree near the Slifer Red Dorms, looking out across the sea. He had been avoiding the Academy’s main roof lately because it reminded him of Zane. This was his second favorite spot.
After the arena had collapsed, Greg had taken command of the excavation teams. They got Zane out in perfect health, aside from the fact that he was in a Hell Coma. Hell Kaiser was nowhere to be found.
That was two weeks ago.
Suddenly, a voice behind him whispered “Mind if I sit here?”
Turning around, Greg saw that the newcomer was Syrus Truesdale, Zane’s younger brother. “Sure”
For about five minutes the pair sat there in silence. Then Greg muttered “I’m sorry”
Syrus sighed sadly. “It’s hard, knowing that he’s in a Hell Coma”
“And it’s all my fault”
Syrus looked at Greg. “What makes you say that?”
“I was protecting him. If I was just a little bit stronger…”
“Stop that talk right now. Zane wouldn’t want you to be like this”
“Well Zane isn’t here right now!” Greg snapped, his temper close to the edge. “So instead of telling me how I should act how about you tell me what I’ve got to do to get Zane and Christy back!”
“Don’t…yell…at…me” Syrus said softly, but with a hint of steel.
Greg just glared.
Syrus sighed and reached into a backpack that lay by his side. Greg gave start when he saw this, for he hadn’t noticed it before. Greg then looked at Syrus’ hands, and recognized what the objects he was holding were immediately: duel disks.
“You are kidding right?” Greg asked.
Syrus nodded grimly. “Someone’s gotta knock you out of this depression. And I’m gonna do it, one way or another!”
Greg took a duel disk, activated it, and slid his deck in. “Fine”
Syrus copied him. “Let’s duel!”

Meanwhile, back at the Duelist Academy main arena…
“Alright!” Jaden said, clapping his hands. “Zane wouldn’t want us to sulk, so let’s go on with this tournament!”
“Why?” Sophia called back. “So Hell Kaiser can take out more of us?”
Jaden shook his head. “No. So we can enjoy life”
“Yeah, spending time in a Hell Coma is real enjoyable” Violet replied sarcastically.
Alexis coughed.
“Anyway” Jaden continued. “Let’s see who’s going up next!” He turned to the big monitor, which displayed the last four names left to play: Joe, Aster, Kai, and Tyranno. With the touch of a button, Tyranno winked out.
“That was fast” he muttered.
Too fast? Kai thought.
It took another minute, but then Joe’s name was eliminated as well. “Okay then!” Jaden said cheerfully. “It’ll be Kai and Aster now, and then Joe and Tyranno.”
Kai and Aster walked to the dueling platform and began shuffling their decks.
“Mars is right you know” Kai remarked as he slid his deck in his disk. “You’re going to fall this round”
Aster smiled slightly as he activated his duel disk and slid his deck in. “We’ll see”
Kai activated his duel disk, and silently the next duel of the second round began.
Kai – 8000 Aster – 8000
The two duelists drew five cards. Aster drew Destiny Draw, Clock Tower Prison, Destiny Hero Dogma, Destiny Hero Malicious, and Eternal Dread. Kai drew Magician’s Valkyria, Magician’s Circle, Dark Magician Girl, Dark Magician, and Sage’s Stone. Aster went first.
Aster drew his opening card. (Destiny Hero Diamond Dude) “I summon my Destiny Hero Diamond Dude in ATK mode! (1400 ATK)” In a flash of light, a man in a green robe with crystals coming out of his arms appeared on the field. “Now his ability activates! By sending the top card of my graveyard, which is my Pot of Greed, I can activate it next turn automatically if it’s a Normal Spell Card. I then activate my Destiny Draw! By discarding my Destiny Hero Malicious, I can draw two more cards. (D-Shield and Eternal Dread) I set two cards facedown (Eternal Dread x2) and follow that up with my Clock Tower Prison!” The two duelists were then surrounded by a courtyard and a gigantic tower that looked like Big Ben rose up behind Aster. “I then activate my two Eternal Dreads to give my Tower four clock counters! Now by sending it to the grave, I can summon my Destiny Hero Dreadmaster!” The courtyard vanished and in its place appeared a huge man with bulging muscles, red eyes, and a steel mask. “Now with his ability, I can bring back my Destiny Hero Malicious. But now I sacrifice them all to summon my Destiny Hero Dogma! (3400 ATK)” The three monsters disappeared and a demon-man with black wings, dark body armor, and a sword arm appeared in front of Aster. “That ends my turn.”
Sophia whistled. “Wow, that’s some turn”
“He does that move often” Johan remarked. “He always finds someway to get one of his biggest bruisers out on the opening turn.”
Kai drew his opening card and grunted as he took damage from Dogma’s effect. (Magician’s Valkyria)
Kai – 4000 Aster – 8000
“I summon Magician’s Valkyria to the field in ATK mode! (1600 ATK) Now I activate Magician’s Circle! This lets us both summon a Spellcaster monster from either our decks or our hands.”
Aster growled. “I have none”
Kai grinned. “Well I do: my second Magician’s Valkyria!” Sure enough, two kid versions of the Dark Magician Girl were on the field. “Since both of them are on the field, you can’t attack me!”

Syrus – 8000 Greg – 8000
The two duelists stood across from each other and drew five cards. Greg drew his Burstinatrix, Avian, Polymerization, Fusion Recovery, and Sparkman. Syrus had Power Bond, Gyroid, Steamroid, Limiter Removal, and Premature Burial. Greg went first.
Greg drew his opening card. (Miracle Fusion) “I activate Polymerization! I fuse Avian and Burstinatrix to summon Elemental Hero Flame Wingman! (2100 ATK)” The two heroes entered a vortex and out appeared a being that was colored black, green, and red who had a dragon head for an arm. “Now I activate Fusion Recovery to bring back Burstinatrix and Polymerization, which I will now activate again to fuse Flame Wingman and Sparkman together to summon Elemental Hero Shining Flare Wingman! (2500 ATK)” The Flame Wingman vanished and in its place appeared a being covered in shining silver armor that also had silver wings. “Now I summon Elemental Hero Burstinatrix and activate Miracle Fusion! By removing Avian and Burstinatrix from play, I can create the Elemental Hero Phoenix Enforcer! (2100 ATK)” Beside the Shining Flare Wingman appeared a humanoid similar to the Flame Wingman, minus the dragon arm. “And since I have two heroes in the grave, Shining Flare Wingman gains 600 ATK! (3100 ATK) That ends my turn.”
Syrus drew his card. (Pot of Greed) “I activate Pot of Greed to draw two cards (Negate Attack and Armoroid Gaidengo). I now activate Power Bond to fuse Steamroid and Gyroid together to summon Steam Gyroid! (2200 ATK)” A funny cartoon plane-steam engine hybrid appeared on the field. “And since I used Power Bond, its ATK is doubled! (4400 ATK) I now activate Limiter Removal to double its ATK again! (8800 ATK) Steam Gyroid, attack his Phoenix Enforcer!”
The machine leapt up into the air, its blades spinning. It landed and cut through the hero, but he stayed strong and didn’t explode into pixels.
“Phoenix Enforcer can’t be destroyed in battle” Greg explained as he held his stomach, feeling some sympathetic pain as his life points decreased.
Syrus – 8000 Greg – 1300
Syrus shrugged. “I now activate Premature Burial, pay 800 LP, and summon Gyroid. Then I summon my two monsters to summon Armoroid Gaidengo! (2800 ATK)” The new ‘roid’ monster looked like a Gundam, with its blockish white body.
Smart, Greg thought. He knew he was going to lose Steam Gyroid eventually so he made the best of it.
“Now I set a card facedown (Negate Attack) and end my turn and I take 2200 damage from Power Bond” Syrus concluded.
Syrus – 5800 Greg – 1300
Greg stared at Syrus. Okay, no monsters and he has one that can take me out in one hit! I’m really going to need something now!
“My move!” Greg called out. “Draw! (Pot of Greed) I’ll start things off by activating Pot of Greed, which allows me to draw two cards (Fusion Recovery and King of the Swamp). I now activate Fusion Recovery to return Sparkman and Polymerization to my hand. Now I’ll activate my Polymerization to fuse Sparkman and Phoenix Enforcer together! So now meet my Elemental Hero Shining Phoenix Enforcer! (2500 ATK)”
The new hero was a sight: a muscular body covered in green with silver armor. His hands were silver claws. He had silver wings coming out of his back.
“Just like Shining Flare Wingman, Shining Phoenix Enforcer gains 300 ATK for every Hero in my grave! (3400 ATK) Which is the same ATK as my Shining Flare Wingman!”
Syrus paled.
“SHINING FLARE WINGMAN, DESTROY ARMOROID GAIDENGO WITH THUNDERFORCE STRIKE!” Greg roared, pointing to Syrus’ only monster. The Hero’s armor glowed with power as it leapt into the air and began to descend…

Scowling, Aster drew his next card. (D-Chain) “Don’t forget my Pot of Greed, which activates now because of Diamond Dude (Destiny Mirage and Destiny Hero Double Dude). I’ll set my draw card facedown and end my turn.”
Kai drew his next card. (Pot of Greed) “I’ll activate Pot of Greed to draw two more cards (Sorcerer of Dark Magic and Magic Scepter). I now sacrifice one of my monsters to summon Dark Magician Girl in ATK mode! (2000 ATK)” In a flash of light, the famous female magician appeared. “Now I activate Sage’s Stone to summon the Dark Magician! (2500 ATK)” In another flash of light, the famous purple-robed magician appeared as well. “But now, by sacrificing my Dark Magician and Dark Magician Girl, I can summon my Sorcerer of Dark Magic! (3200 ATK)” The dark-robed magician that made its first appearance against Seto Kaiba many years ago appeared in front of its master. “And now, by equipping it with Magic Scepter, my magician gains 500 ATK (3700 ATK), just enough to take out your Dogma! Sorcerer of Dark Magic, Dark Magic Blast!”
The sorcerer’s scepter gathered dark energy and unleashed it towards its target…
“Hold it!” Aster snapped. “I activate D-Chain! This increases my monster’s ATK by 500!”
Kai smirked. “It would…if it wasn’t negated by my Sorcerer of Dark Magic.”
Aster groaned. “Crap, I forgot…”
The dark magic blasted through Aster’s Trap Card and connected with Dogma. With a roar, the monster exploded.
Kai – 4000 Aster – 7700
“Magician’s Valkyria, direct attack!” Kai ordered.
The petite magician leapt into the air and unleashed a volley of light green magic bolts at Aster, which hit the ground near his feet.
Kai – 4000 Aster – 6100
Aster, panting heavily, drew his next card. (Graceful Charity) “I activate Graceful Charity! I draw three (Destiny Hero Plasma, Triple Threat, and Over Destiny) and discard two (Double Dude and Over Destiny). I activate the Spell Card Triple Threat, so now I can summon three monsters from my deck if I pay 500 LP per monster! So now rise Destiny Heroes Fear Monger, Blade Master, and Doom Lord!”
Kai – 4000 Aster – 4600
“But that’s not all!” Aster declared triumphantly. “I now sacrifice my three monsters to summon Destiny Hero Plasma! (1900 ATK)”
The new monster was quite a site: most people thought it looked like a vampire. It had blood colored robes, large claws, and three spikes coming out of his upper back. Leathery wings came out of the back as well and the beast also had a large tail.
Aster grinned. “Meet Destiny Hero Plasma, the monster of your destruction!”

“Hold it!” Syrus called out. “I activate my Negate Attack!”
Greg just shook his head as his monster floated back down to earth.
Syrus drew his next card. (Replenished Resources) “I activate Replenished Resources! By removing my Gyroid from the game, I can draw two cards (Junk Yard and Vehicroid Connection). I now activate Junk Yard! This Spell Card allows me to send up to five Machines in my deck to the grave so I’ll choose Stealthroid, Truckroid, Drillroid, and Expressroid.”
Greg’s eyes widened. Oh crap…
“I now activate Vehicroid Connection Zone! By removing Expressroid, Stealthroid, Drillroid, and Truckroid from the game I can summon Super Vehicroid Stealth Union! (3600 ATK)”
The jet, truck, express train, and drill vanished into a vortex. The monster that came out looked almost exactly like a Gundam, except his limbs were made of vehicle parts.
“Now I activate its ability!” Syrus announced. “By equipping it with my other monster, my Stealth Union can attack both of your monsters! Stealth Union, how about you show him how it’s done!”
The massive machine raised both of its fists and slammed them down, crushing both of Greg’s heroes in one shot.
Syrus – 5800 Greg – 900
“What are going to do Greg?” Syrus asked. “You’ve got no monster’s to defend you and I have close to over six times as much life points as you! You’re pretty much finished!”
He’s right, Greg thought grimly. There’s no way I’m going to win this…
Greg closed his eyes tight. Images of Christy and Zane flashed in his mind’s eye. NO!! I’m not going to lose!! I will beat Syrus!! I will bring back Zane and Christy!! “I…WILL…NOT…GIVE…UP!!” He roared out loud as he drew his card. He smiled when he saw it. “I activate Fifth Hope! By shuffling the five Heroes in my grave back into my deck, I can draw two cards plus one since I have no cards on the field! (Future Fusion, Miracle Fusion, and Bladedge) I now activate Future Fusion! By sending my Avian, Burstinatrix, Clayman, and Bubbleman from my deck to the grave, I can summon my Elemental Hero Electrum in two turns. Now I activate Miracle Fusion! By removing Bubbleman and Clayman from play, I can summon Elemental Hero Mudballman in DEF mode! (3000 DEF)” The new monster looked like an extra large Clayman, except it had Bubbleman’s head. “I now set one card facedown (Hero Counterattack) and end my turn.”
Syrus drew his next card. (Burial from a Different Dimension) “My monster, destroy Mudballman!”
The huge mechanical behemoth slammed his fist into Greg’s monster, causing him to lose life points…and smile?
Syrus – 5800 Greg – 300
“I activate Hero Counterattack!” Greg announced. “This card can only be activated when you destroy a monster. Normally, you randomly select one card in my hand and if it’s a monster, I can destroy yours and summon mine to the field, but since I only have one…” Greg flipped that one card over and Syrus paled. “Let’s just introduce you to my Elemental Hero Bladedge and say goodbye to your Stealth Union!”
The large machine groaned and exploded. Its pieces flew to Greg’s side to the field to create the new Hero with golden armor, arm blades, and golden wings. (2600 ATK)
Syrus swallowed. “I end my turn”
Greg drew his next card. (Return from the Different Dimension) “This is it Syrus! I activate Return from the Different Dimension! By paying half my life points…”
Syrus – 5800 Greg – 150
I can summon up to four monsters that have been removed from the game so come out Avian (1000 ATK), Burstinatrix (1200 ATK), Bubbleman (800 ATK), and Clayman (800 ATK)! Now my five monsters, finish him!”
First came Avian with his Quail Cascade, his feathers knocking Syrus back a bit.
Syrus – 4800 Greg – 150
Then came Burstinatrix with her Flashfire, the heat causing Syrus to bend over panting and sweating
Syrus – 3600 Greg – 150
Next was Bubbleman with Bubble Blast, getting Syrus soaked.
Syrus – 2800 Greg – 150
After that was Clayman with Defense Slam, knocking Syrus back another step.
Syrus – 2000 Greg – 150
Finally came Bladedge with Slice ‘n Dice Attack, knocking Syrus clean off his feet.
Syrus – 0 Greg – 150
As the holograms vanished, Greg walked over to Syrus and helped him to his feet. “You okay?”
Syrus nodded and smiled. “You’ll get him Greg. I have no doubt.” With a wave, he ran off, leaving Greg alone once more.

“Now my Plasma here has an ability” Aster explained. “I can choose one monster on your side of the field, equip to my monster, and increase Plasma’s ATK by half of your monster’s ATK! And I think your Sorcerer will do very nicely. (3750 ATK) Destiny Hero Plasma, destroy his final monster with Plasma Burst!”
The Hero unleashed blood-red energy at the Valkyria destroying it within seconds.
Kai – 1850 Aster – 4600
Kai drew his next card. (Spontaneous Fusion) “I activate Spontaneous Fusion! By paying half my Life Points…”
Kai – 925 Aster – 4600
“I can summon my Dark Flare Knight! (2200 ATK) Now my monster, attack Destiny Hero Plasma!”
Sophia’s mouth dropped open.
“He’s lost it!” Chazz exploded. “He’s been doing excellent and now he’s killing himself!”
“No he’s not” Violet snapped.
“Why?” Johan asked.
Violet pointed to the field.
The Knight and stuck its sword into Plasma and was immediately destroyed by the opponent’s counterattack. But the pixels began forming a new monster, one with golden armor and a gold scythe. (2800 ATK)
Aster’s mouth dropped open.
Kai laughed. “I guess I should explain. Dark Flare Knight doesn’t give me damage when destroyed in battle and when he does die in combat, I can summon this new monster: Mirage Knight! He’s only around for one turn, but you won’t forget him: When he attacks, his ATK is increased by the ATK of your monster! Mirage Knight, attack! Daylight Slash!
As the knight jumped into the air, golden light surrounded him, strengthening him (6550 ATK). When he came down, he loped off Plasma’s head and the Mirage Knight exploded.
Kai – 925 Aster – 1800
Aster drew his next card and sighed in relief. “I summon Destiny Hero Fear Monger! (1000 ATK) The dark hero had dark armor and a gun arm. “Attack him and finish this!”
The monster raised its arm and unleashed his volley of bullets, knocking Kai off his feet.
Kai – 0 Aster – 1800
The holograms disappeared and Aster fell to his knees and began to shake.
Kai rose to a sitting position. “You okay?” he asked.
Aster looked up and smiled. “Yeah. That was awesome!”
Kai cracked a grin too. “Yeah it was”
“You me a rematch”
“I know, I know. That’s the second one I owe.”
The two laughed, fell back, and began to snore.
