Yu-Gi-Oh! Battle of the Heavens Episode 61: “Welcome Back to Duelist Academy”
Gregory Henry, the 20 year old leader of Team Evolution, got out of his car and took out the bag of groceries next to him. After locking his ride, he entered his small house. As he took off his coat, Greg noticed a picture on the far wall of the family room. Standing in it were himself, his girlfriend Violet, his cousin Sophia, her boyfriend Kai, Greg’s sister Christy and her boyfriend Zane, the Chancellor of Duelist Academy Jaden and his wife Alexis, Greg’s friend Joe and his girlfriend Rose, and then the bachelors Atticus, Johan, Mars, Chazz, Bastion, Scar, and Tyranno. Greg sighed. That picture had been taken two years ago at Jaden and Alexis’ wedding. Two years after the attempted takeover of Anubis. Two years after the brief rebirth of Atem. Two years after Team Evolution took down Anubis and his Shadow Riders. Now, the world was at peace. The team that Greg had created at least 5-6 years ago had been essentially split apart as everyone left to form their new lives. But Greg had a feeling that this newfound peace wouldn’t last. Suddenly, his cell phone began to ring. Picking it up, he answered. “Hello?” “Hey Greg!” replied a cheerful voice that Greg new only too well. “How are things?” Greg smiled. “Fine Jaden. Just fine. How’s Alexis? “She doing great! She’s now head of Obelisk Blue!” “Congratulations for her” “Yeah…” “Okay Jay, spill it. I know you didn’t call me just to catch up on my social life.” “You’re right. You know that tournament we’re hosting?” “The Duelist Academy Grand Championship? The one that’s supposed to rival the Kaiba Corp Grand Championship?” “Righto. Anyway, I promised everyone that the victor would get to participate in the duel of their lives, and…” “You don’t have anyone so you’re hoping that I can fill in?” “Right” “Okay, I’ll do it. It’ll be nice to see the Academy again. But you owe me one Jay.” “Thanks Greg. See ya later!” With a click, Jaden hung up and Greg closed his phone. With a sigh, he went into the kitchen to prepare dinner.

That night, Greg awoke with a start. He felt another presence enter the house. At first, he thought Violet, who had a room right down the hall, was just going to get a drink, but then the space right in front of his bed began glowing with golden light…as is someone was going to materialize… Then it hit him. “Father?” Greg called softly. In a few minutes, the spirit of Dartz appeared in his room. “Greg, I don’t have much time. The world in is in serious trouble and only you can save it from certain disaster. A figure from the past has come back and he’s looking for revenge and world domination. You must stop him!” “Why me?” Greg protested. “I just want a normal life! Is that too much to ask for?” Dartz looked at him. “This is your last challenge Greg. After this, your destiny shall be complete. And then your life will start anew.” With that, Dartz disappeared. Greg sat there for a few minutes, wondering if Dartz was serious. But at last, he faced the facts: there was one last mission to complete. Sighing, we got out of bed and went into his wardrobe, where a silver duel disk sat on a shelf, with its deck right beside it.

Knock, knock, knock. “I’m coming, I’m coming!” said an irritable voice from within the house. “Sophia was never much a morning person.” Greg commented. “Yeah, and now we’re waking her up at 3 in the morning” Violet replied. The door opened and there stood Sophia. “Hey guys, do you mind not waking me up at three in the morning? I like…to…” Sophia finally looked at her guests. Greg was wearing dark gray sweatpants, a gray shirt with a red version of the E-Hero symbol, a black windbreaker with white stripes on the arms, and his duel disk was on his arm and his deck box at his waist. Violet was wearing a blue jacket, light blue jeans that were faded a bit from use, and a black shirt that had something that looked like angel wings on it. She also had her duel disk and deck box and her long hair was in a pony-tail. And in that moment, Sophia knew something was up. “No, no, and no. I’m not joining up.” Greg sighed. “C’mon Sophia. We need help. There’s one last evil out there, and we have to stop it!” “Why us?” Sophia cried. “Why us?” Greg looked at her and replied softly. “It’s our destiny” Sophia looked at the two of them for a moment and sighed. “Alright. I’ll go get ready. Where do we meet up?” “The airport” Greg replied. “Two hours. See you there” And with that, the two of them got into their car and drove away. Sophia stared after Greg and Violet’s car for a few minutes. Then she went into the house and began rummaging through her things, looking for her duel disk and deck.

Ding dong. “GET OUT OF HERE YOU LOUSY NO GOOD MARKETER!!” came the angry yell of a girl inside the apartment building. Greg sighed and rubbed his temples. Why am I stuck with trying to wake up Christy…who absolutely refuses to wake up before 10 AM? He rang the doorbell a few more times until he heard a male voice grumble “Alright, alright I’m coming”. The door opened a few moments later to reveal none other Zane Truesdale, Greg’s friend, rival, and Christy’s fiancé. Zane’s mouth dropped open. “Greg?! What are you doing here?!” Greg smiled. “Nice to see you too Zane” He then paused, taking in Zane’s appearance. “Pardon me for asking, but why are you in your bathrobe? Taking a shower?” Zane didn’t say anything. Greg frowned. “Truesdale, you and I are going to have a long talk about you and my sister one of these days…but right now I need you to get my charming sister out of bed, get ready, and meet me at the airport at 5 AM. Got it?” Zane nodded. “What’s going on?” Greg turned to leave. “I don’t know Zane. That’s what scares me. I can’t sense anything evil. I don’t know what’s going on.” Shaking his head, Greg repeated “5 AM Zane” and dashed to the car and drove off.

At 5 AM, the whole team met outside the airport as per instructions. After Joe and Rose arrived, Greg handed Sophia, Kai, Zane, Christy, Johan, Mars, Chazz, Tyranno, Joe and Rose a slip of paper: their plane tickets. “We’re going to Duelist Academy to participate in the Duelist Academy Grand Championship. If I’m correct, our last challenge is going to be there to muck things up. Our flight leaves in 15 minutes. Do you all have what you need?” Everyone held up their duel disks, decks, and a small suitcase of essentials. Greg grinned. “Perfect. Thankfully, I managed to call in a few favors to Kaiba and we got our own private jet and top priority on the runway.” “It really pays to save the world, doesn’t it?” Chazz remarked. Sophia nodded. “Oh yeah” Greg beckoned the other to follow. “C’mon, let’s go get on board so I can catch up on my sleep” “YOU NEED TO CATCH UP ON SLEEP?!?!” Sophia and Christy yelled. “YOU WOKE US UP AT THREE IN THE BLEEDING MORNING!!!” Greg held up his hands in defense and whispered “Violet…help?”

Greg looked down at the water underneath them. They had been in the air for an hour now and everyone was just catching up with each other and speculating about the tournament. Greg was lost in thought. What is this new evil that’s waiting for us? Is it REALLY my last challenge? Do we really have a shot at normal life? Violet, who was sitting next to him, put a hand on his shoulder. “Hey, you okay?” Greg smiled and covered her hand with his. “I’m fine Vi. Just…thinking” Violet cocked her head to one side. “About what?” Greg sighed. “What’s out there waiting for us? And what will we do after this is all over?” Violet smiled. “What’s waiting is a place of memories and an evil crackpot. After we’re done…we’ll live a normal life, just like anyone else.” Greg noticed the ‘we’, but didn’t comment on it. Instead, he thought about it. He had been thinking about proposing to Violet for some time now, but his courage always failed him when he had the chance. I promise that once this thing is over, I’m going to marry Violet, Greg vowed just as the pilot announced that they were arriving at Duelist Academy.

It took at least 10 minutes to get everything off the plane, but at last Team Evolution were standing in Jaden’s office. Along with Jaden, the meeting was attended by Jim Cook, Adrian Gecko, Axel Brody, Syrus Truesdale, Alexis and Atticus Rhodes, and Bastion Misawa. Obviously, there were a lot of happy reunions going around. Johan was ecstatic to see Adrian, Axel, and Jim again, since it had been quite a few years since the events in the different dimension. Mars shocked everyone by embracing Axel, who turned out to be Mars’ cousin. Bastion, Syrus, Alexis, and Atticus were happy to see Chazz and Tyranno again and Jaden…well, was happy to see everyone. “Alright, alright settle down everyone!” Jaden called out. “Let’s get down to business. Who wants…” But at that moment, the door to Jaden’s office burst open. Naturally, Greg and Team Evolution had whirled around and were already activating their duel disks (they have a paranoia streak going right now) until they saw… “Am I late?” panted none other than… “DOCTOR CROWLER?!?!?!” exclaimed Greg, Sophia, and Violet. Crowler gathered his thoughts and gave a sneer. “Well. It looks like the dropouts have returned.” Christy leaned over and whispered in Greg’s ear. “Isn’t Jaden concerned about Michael Jackson being around kids?” It took all of Greg’s self control not to burst out laughing. “Didn’t you hear me, Sophia, and Violet?” he chocked out. “No” “That man is Dr. Crowler, ex-head of the Obelisk Blue dorms and my old teacher. He hates my guts and his life obsession is to dress like a lady” Christy stared at her brother incredulously. “You had a cross-dresser for a teacher…and you stayed?” “Welcome to our world” muttered Sophia, who had been listening in on the entire conversation. Jaden was confronting his teacher. “Greg and his friends are here to help me out in the tournament!” “As janitors I hope” Crowler laughed. “No. Greg is the King of Games so the winner of the tournament will duel him and I was hoping his friends would compete. I know I am!” “WHAT?!?!” Crowler cried as he anime fell, causing snorts of laughter to erupt from Team Evolution. “Hasn’t changed much has he?” Greg muttered to Violet, who burst out laughing. After dragging Crowler and locking him in his closet—I mean, putting him in his office to rest—Jaden got back to business. “Right, who want’s to join the tournament?” “Who’s already signed up?” asked Greg. Jaden consulted the list. “Alexis, myself, Kaiba, Aster, and Hell Kaiser” Greg didn’t understand it, but while everyone was drooling over the fact that Aster Phoenix was joining the tournament, Johan, Syrus, Bastion, Jaden, Alexis, Atticus, Adrian, Axel, Chazz, and Tyranno all turned and looked at Zane, who was paper white. Greg made a note to talk to Zane later. Sophia walked towards the desk. “Where’s the pen? I’m signing up!” “Me too!” chimed in Violet. “Don’t forget us!” Johan, Mars, and Kai said together. “This is going to be awesome!” Joe and Rose cried running to the desk. “Don’t even think about barring us from the tournament” Chazz said as he and Tyranno strutted to the desk Christy and Zane looked at each other, shrugged, and joined the large group at the desk, which were fighting over the pen. Greg just looked on, his eyes narrowed. I think I just found my latest challenge. And based on the expression on Zane’s face, it’s not going to be an easy fight.
