Episode 68: “Fiery Destiny”
Mars Brody and Aster Phoenix stood in the Critias purple arena shuffling their respective decks. After the Hell Duel between Hell Kaiser and Christy and the events afterward, Jaden had moved the tournament out of the Duelist Academy’s main arena and to the Critias Arena.
Greg, Violet, Sophia, Chazz, Tyranno, and Johan stood on the observation deck above the arena. The rest of Team Evolution were at Christy’s bedside just in case Hell Kaiser came back to finish the job.
Below, Aster activated his duel disk and slapped his deck into its slapped. “Ready Mars?”
Mars copied his opponent. “Ready to face the wrath of a volcano?”
“Ready to meet your destiny?” Aster shot back.
Aster – 8000 Mars – 8000
The two duelists drew five cards. Aster’s hand consisted of Destiny Hero Dogma, Destiny Hero Diamond Dude, Over Destiny, Destiny Hero Dasher, and Clock Tower Prison. Mars had Volcanic Rocket, Tri Blaze Accelerator, Volcanic Shell, Negate Attack, and Pot of Greed. Aster went first.
Aster drew his card. (Destiny Hero Doom Lord) “I activate Clock Tower Prison! When four turns pass I shall be able to summon a new monster to the field. I now summon Destiny Hero Diamond Dude! (1400 ATK) Thanks to his ability, I can take a Spell Card in my deck, such as Graceful Charity, and remove it from the game so I can activate it next turn!”
Mars drew his card. (Sakuretsu Armor) “I summon my Volcanic Rocket in ATK mode! (1900 ATK) And sine I summoned it to the field, I can bring my Blaze Accelerator to my hand! I’ll now activate my Accelerator and then send it to the grave so I can activate my Tri Blaze Accelerator! By discarding my Volcanic Shell, I can destroy your Diamond Dude and deal you 500 damage!”
Aster – 7500 Mars – 8000
“Volcanic Rocket, attack him directly!”
Aster – 5600 Mars – 8000
“I’ll now set my draw card facedown and end my turn” Mars finished.
Aster drew his next card. (Negate Attack) “Don’t forget Diamond Dude’s ability: Graceful Charity activate! Now I draw three cards (Destiny Hero Malicious, Destiny Mirage, and Destiny Draw) and discard two (Negate Attack and Destiny Hero Malicious). Now by removing my Destiny Hero Malicious from the game, I can summon another Malicious to the field. But I now sacrifice it to summon Destiny Hero Dasher! (2100 ATK) Dasher, destroy Volcanic Rocket!”
“Activate Sakuretsu Armor!” Mars cried out. “This will destroy your Dasher!”
Aster nodded. “I’ll set one card facedown (Destiny Mirage), switch Diamond Dude to DEF (1600 DEF), and end my turn”
Mars drew his next card. (Volcanic Scattershot) “I activate the special ability of my Volcanic Shell! By paying 500 LP, I can add another Shell to my hand! I’ll now discard it to destroy your Diamond Dude and deal 500 damage to your LP!”
Aster – 5100 Mars – 7500
“Volcanic Rocket, attack him directly!”
“I reveal my facedown trap!” Aster called out. “Activate Destiny Mirage! Since you destroyed a Destiny Hero by a card effect this turn, I can bring him back, so Diamond Dude, come on back in DEF mode!”
Mars shrugged. “Volcanic Rocket, attack Diamond Dude”
Aster drew his next card (Destiny Hero Double Dude) “Thanks for destroying my Dasher. Now his ability activates! Since I drew a monster card, I can automatically summon him to the field! Destiny Hero Double Dude, DEF mode! (1000 DEF) Now I activate Over Destiny! Now I can select a monster in my grave, such as my Dasher, and Special Summon one monster from my deck that is equal or less than half the number of stars on Dasher. So say hello to Destiny Hero Captain Tenacious! I now remove my Destiny Hero Malicious from the game to summon another one to the field. Now I sacrifice all three of my monsters to summon Destiny Hero Dogma! (3400 ATK) Now Dogma, attack his Volcanic Rocket!”
Aster – 5100 Mars – 6000
Mars drew his card…and then Dogma fired an energy bolt at him, driving him to his knees. “What happened?!” he demanded as he got to his feet.
Aster smiled. “Destiny Hero Dogma’s special ability activated: since he was Special Summon by sacrificing three monsters, I can halve your life total during your Standby Phase!”
Aster – 5100 Mars – 3000
Up in the observation deck, Greg remarked “It looks like Aster finally has taken control of the duel”
“Not really” Kai replied, who had just come up and plopped himself into a chair next to his leader. “Don’t forget Mars can just blast it away again with his Tri Blaze Accelerator”
Greg nodded and turned to watch the duel again.
Mars looked at the card he had just drawn. (Volcanic Hammerer) “I activate Pot of Greed! This lets me draw two cards. (Monster Reborn and Volcanic Slicer) I now activate Monster Reborn to bring back my Volcanic Rocket. Now I’ll sacrifice it to summon Volcanic Hammerer! (2400 ATK) Now I pay 500 LP to add another Volcanic Shell to my hand. Now by discarding it I’ll activate my Tri Blaze Accelerator and destroy your Dogma and deal you 500 damage! Volcanic Hammerer, direct attack! Volcano Hammer Shot!”
Aster – 2200 Mars – 2500
“This is bad” Greg remarked. “Aster is down to his last 2000 LP and one of his best monsters has bit the dust. One more direct attack and he’s toast”
Aster drew his next card. (Destiny Hero Disk Commander) “I activate Destiny Draw! By discarding my Disk Commander, I can draw two more cards! (Pot of Greed and Monster Reborn) I now activate Pot of Greed so I can draw another two cards (Dark City and Eternal Dread). I now activate Monster Reborn to bring back Destiny Hero Disk Commander (300 ATK), who will let me draw two more cards thanks to his ability. (Over Destiny and Destiny Hero Captain Tenacious) I now activate Over Destiny! This let’s me summon my Destiny Hero Fear Monger! (1000 ATK) Now I summon Destiny Hero Captain Tenacious! (800 ATK) Now I activate Eternal Dread! This adds two time counters to my Clock Tower Prison. And since it has more than 4 counters on it, I can sacrifice my Prison in order to summon DESTINY HERO DREADMASTER! (?/?) Thanks to his ability, I can summon my Destiny Hero Diamond Dude to the field. (1400 ATK) Now about another change of scenery with Dark City! Now whenever a Destiny Hero attacks a monster stronger than it, it gains 1000 ATK! Also my Dreadmaster’s ability kicks in: his ATK and DEF are equal to the combined ATK and DEF of the other Destiny Heroes I control! (3500/3700)”
“It’s over!” Kai cried out.
“Destiny Hero Diamond Dude, attack Volcanic Hammerer! Diamond Lust Blast!”
“They’ll tie!” Mars protested.
Aster smiled. “No they won’t. Dreadmaster prevents all Destiny Heroes from dying in combat this turn. And don’t forget Dark City, which will boost Diamond Dude’s ATK! (2400 ATK) So your Hammerer falls, leaving you wide open! Dreadmaster, Disk Commander, Captain Tenacious, and Fear Monger DIRECT ATTACK! FINISH THIS!”
Aster – 2200 Mars – 0
Aster approached Mars, who had remained on his feet. “Good duel” Aster said, and he held his hand out.
Mars shook it, then pulled out two cards. “You’re lucky you beat me that turn. Otherwise…” he trailed off as Aster looked at the cards: Volcanic Scattershot and Volcanic Doomfire. Scattershot would have destroyed every single one of his Heroes and Doomfire…well, that’d just pound him into the ground.
Mars turned and walked away, throwing over his shoulder “Watch out Phoenix. I’ve discovered your weakness. You’re not gonna make it far in this tournament”
Aster just stood there, still in shock of how close he came to defeat.
