Episode 9: “A Real Gem”
Toshiro was lying down on a couch in Kaiba Corp’s lobby, looking at the ceiling. His deck was in his hand…and vibrating.
It’s been doing this a lot, Toshiro thought. Ever since I dueled Jonathan, it’s like it’s on a permanent adrenaline rush. What does it mean?
Suddenly, a lock of hair blew into his vision. Looking up, Toshiro noticed Jaya sitting on the edge of the couch. “Hey”
Jaya briefly smiled back, then winced and briefly clutched her side where her deck was located. “Hi. Why are you sitting here alone?”
Toshiro ignored the question. Instead, he pointedly nodded in the direction of Jaya’s deck and asked. “Yours too?”
Jaya looked in the direction of Toshiro’s nod and covered her deck with her hand. “It’s nothing.”
Toshiro shrugged. “Anyway, what did you want?”
Jaya pulled him to his feet. “I want you to meet someone” Turning behind her, she whistled. Suddenly, a black haired girl with brown eyes walked up next to Jaya, a pink duel disk on her arm.
Toshiro blinked. “Haven’t I seen you before?”
The girl—who looked like she was about 18—smirked. “If you watch ballet, yes.”
Toshiro’s mouth fell open a fraction. “No way…you’re Ariel Rhodes! The famous ballerina!” He turned to Jaya. “How the hell…?!”
Jaya smirked. “She’s my cousin, Toshiro.”
Toshiro’s mouth fell open…all the way this time. After a few minutes, he regained the power of speech. “Has Tokyro seen her yet?” he asked.
Jaya snorted. “Hell no.”
“Good.” Toshiro replied. “Let’s try to keep it that way. If Tokyro sees her, then he’ll never shut up.”
“No way…” a voice from behind them whispered. “Not Ariel Rhodes”
The three teenagers spun around to face the speaker. The was about 6 feet tall, had blue hair reaching down to her middle back, and had green eyes.
Ariel grinned. “Well, well…Crystal Anderson.”
Jaya turned to look at her cousin. “You don’t mean the daughter of Johan Anderson?!”
Toshiro shook his head. “Damn, this is one tough crowd…”
Crystal stepped closer to the group. “It is you, Ariel! I thought you were getting a manicure or something! I mean, why would you mess up your makeup?”
Toshiro snorted quietly, getting an elbow in the ribs from Jaya in retaliation.
Ariel narrowed her eyes. “Can you find a new way to say hello, Crystal? Hearing the same thing over and over again gets kinda boring.”
Crystal shrugged. “Fine. We’ll discuss it…after I kick your butt in a duel.”
“What makes you think…?” Ariel began, but her retort was cut off by the loudspeaker.
“Will Ariel Rhodes and Crystal Anderson report to the starting line?” said a robotic male voice. “Repeat, will Ariel Rhodes and Crystal Anderson report to the starting line?”
Crystal smirked at Ariel. “That makes me think we’re gonna duel. You game?”
Ariel hefted her duel disk. “Bring it on.”
* * *
10 minutes later…
Ariel and Crystal slid their respective decks into their deck slots on their bikes. Ariel’s D-Wheel was completely pink, while Crystal’s was white with gems embedded on the sides.
“Duel!” the two females shouted as they gunned their motors and sped down the road.
Ariel – 4000 Crystal – 4000
The two duelists drew their opening hand of five cards. Ariel had Blade Skater, Etolie Cyber, Reinforcement of the Army, Cyber Tutu, and Negate Attack. Crystal had Crystal Beast Sapphire Pegasus, Painful Choice, Mystical Space Typhoon, Crystal Counter, and Rainbow Dragon. According to the rules, Ariel went first because she was in front.
Ariel drew her first card. (Command Knight) “I summon Command Knight in ATK mode! (1200 ATK)” In a flash, the red-armored female with a broadsword and shield appeared. “And when she’s on the field, all my Warriors gain 400 ATK! (1200 à 1600 ATK) Now, I set one card facedown (Negate Attack) and end my turn.”
Crystal drew her next card. (Graceful Charity) “I activate Painful Choice! I reveal the top five cards of my deck and you get to choose one to add to my hand!” Suddenly, ghostly images of Crystal Beast Emerald Tortoise, Swords of Revealing Light, Crystal Beast Amber Mammoth, Crystal Beast Cobalt Eagle, and Crystal Beast Topaz Tiger appeared in front of Ariel. “Now choose!”
Ariel looked at each card in turn before pointing to the only Spell Card in the group. “Swords of Revealing Light”
The five images disappeared as Crystal added the said card to her hand. “Next, I activate Graceful Charity! I draw three cards (Crystal Beast Amethyst Cat, Crystal Raigeki, and Crystal Blessing) and discard two (Amethyst Cat and Mystical Space Typhoon). Next, I summon Crystal Beast Sapphire Pegasus in ATK mode! (1800 ATK)” In a flash, a white winged horse with a sapphire horn sticking out of its head appeared. “Now its ability activates, and I can select one Crystal Beast from my deck and bring it to the field as a Continuous Spell Card, so I’ll choose Ruby Carbuncle.” In a red flash, a spherical red gem appeared behind Sapphire Pegasus.
“Now all the conditions are set!” Crystal shouted triumphantly. “Now stare into the face of your defeat!”
Ariel stared as Crystal punched the air; seven beams of light—blue, red, orange, green, purple, teal, and yellow—flew into the air and swirled around each other, forming the outline of a beast…
“Cast your rays of color, Rainbow Dragon!” Crystal cried as a white dragon with jewels embedded on its body and a silver horn and wings with white feathers flew up behind her and unleashed a primal roar. (4000 ATK)
Crystal threw her bike into a skid and pointed at Ariel. “Sapphire Pegasus, attack Command Knight! Sapphire Tornado!”
The white winged horse leapt into the air and pointed its horn at the female warrior…
“Trap Card, go!” Ariel shouted. “Negate Attack will block the attack and end the battle phase!”
Sapphire Pegasus’ blue tornado blast was stopped by a purple shield. As the white horse returned to its place across from Rainbow Dragon, Crystal said “Your turn.”
Ariel drew her next card. (Fusion Gift) “I activate Fusion Gift! I get to select two monsters in my hand to Fusion Summon, and by Special Summoning a Fusion Token to your side of the field in DEF mode…”
In a flash, a swirling mass of rainbow energy with glowing white eyes appeared in front of Crystal’s D-Wheel (1000/1000).
“I can summon the appropriate Fusion Monster!” Ariel finished. She selected two cards from her hand and slid them into her graveyard.
“Now Etolie Cyber and Cyber Blader, join forces!” Ariel announced.
The two skater/ballerinas—one with an orange jumpsuit, red hair, and iron ribbons attached to her arms, and another that was bald, clad in a purple jumpsuit, and had blades protruding from her arms—leapt into the air behind Ariel and entered a multi-colored vortex.
“Now, dazzle us with your cool beauty, Cyber Blader!” Ariel shouted.
The figure that emerged from the vortex was another female ballerina-skater with a red visor, red tank top, and red skirt appeared.
“Now her ability activates, which depends on the number of monsters there is on your side of the field.” Ariel announced. “And since there is three monsters on your side of the field, that means you can’t activate Spell and Trap Cards! Now Cyber Blader, attack Sapphire Pegasus!”
Cyber Blader leapt into air and, with a pirouette, decapitated the winged horse with her ice skate and making it appear with Ruby Carbuncle.
Ariel – 4000 Crystal – 3300
Crystal straightened out her bike and glanced behind her. “Why the extra 400?”
Ariel shrugged. “Command Knight adds 400 ATK to all Warriors I control.”
Then she smirked. “By the way, since you only have two monsters, Cyber Blader’s ATK is doubled! (2500 à 5000 ATK) That ends my turn.”
Crystal drew her next card. (Ancient City-Rainbow Ruins) “I activate my Field Spell Rainbow Ruins!” In a flash, the two duelists were surrounded by the ruins of a coliseum with a rainbow flowing above their heads. “Now I sacrifice my three Crystal Beasts in my Spell/Trap Zone to increase my Dragon’s ATK by 3000! (4000 à 7000 ATK)”
Suddenly, rivers of blue, purple, and red light flowed upwards and into the respective crystals on Rainbow Dragon’s neck.
“Now my Dragon., attack!” Crystal ordered. “RAINBOW REFLECTION!”
The white dragon opened its maw and unleashed a blast of seven-colored energy, blowing apart the figure skater.
Ariel – 2000 Crystal – 3300
Ariel drew her next card. (Pot of Greed) “I activate Pot of Greed to draw two cards. (Call of the Haunted and Mirror Force) I set two cards facedown and end my turn.”
Crystal drew her next card. (Pot of Avarice) “Rainbow Dragon, attack Command Knight!”
The white dragon swirled around and opened its maw and began gathering rainbow energy…
“RAINBOW REFLECTION!!”
The gathered energy streamed forward. The female warrior appeared to tense slightly…
“Trap Card Go!” Ariel shouted. “Mirror Force will destroy all your monsters in ATK position!”
The blast of energy hit Command Knight’s shield and rebounded back towards Rainbow Dragon, blowing it in half.
Crystal snarled. “I activate Pot of Avarice! I return Sapphire Pegasus, Ruby Carbuncle, Rainbow Dragon, Topaz Tiger, and Amber Mammoth to my deck and shuffle it to draw two cards. (Deck Protect and Sapphire Pegasus) “I summon Sapphire Pegasus in ATK mode! (1800 ATK)” In a flash, the white winged horse reappeared. “I now activate its ability to bring Amber Mammoth to my Spell/Trap Zone.” In a flash, the orangish crystal appeared behind the Pegasus. “I also set one card facedown (Deck Protect) and end my turn.”
Ariel drew her next card. (Warrior’s Triumph) “I activate Warrior’s Triumph! By removing two Warrior-type monsters in my graveyard from the game, I can select one Warrior in my graveyard and Special Summon it, ignoring all summoning conditions! So return, Cyber Blader!” In a flash, the skater fusion reappeared beside her master.
“Face down card, open!” Ariel shouted. “My Call of the Haunted will revive my Command Knight!” In a flash, the red armored knight appeared surrounded with a ghostly black aura. “And she increases all my Warrior’s ATKs by 400! (CB: 2100 à 2500; CK: 1200 à 1600) Now, Cyber Blader, attack Sapphire Pegasus!”
Cyber Balder extended her right leg and launched into a spin…
“Trap Go!” Crystal shouted. “I activate Deck Protect! For every 500 ATK your monster has, by discarding a Level 4 or lower monster from deck, I can prevent that much damage! So I discard Ruby Carbuncle, Topaz Tiger, Magician of Faith, D.D. Warrior Lady, and Sangan to prevent all you damage!”
Just as Cyber Blader’s leg connected, a dome of cards covered the white winged horse, stopping the attack.
Ariel scowled. “I end my turn”
Crystal drew her next card. (Refresh) “I activate the Spell Card Refresh! We each discard our hands and the draw a new hand of 5 cards! (Crystal: Rainbow Path, Rare Value, Mystical Space Typhoon, Terraforming, and Lightning Vortex; Ariel: Demotion, Fusion Weapon, Command Knight, Royal Decree, and Dust Tornado) Next, I set one card facedown (Rainbow Path) and end my turn."
Ariel drew her next card. (Double Passé) "I summon another Command Knight! (1200 --> 2000 ATK)" In a flash, a female identical to the first appeared. "Now I activate Demotion and equip it to Cyber Blader, decreasing its Level by 2!" Suddenly, two black cuffs attached themselves to Cyber Blader, covering her in a black aura. "Now, i activate Fusion Weapon! This equip card increases the ATK of my Cyber Blader by 1500! (2500 + 400 + 1500 = 4400 ATK)" In a flash, Cyber Blader's right arm turned into a twisted forked cannon, with the energy emitter between the forks, which curved towards each other but left space between them for a blast of energy to pass through.
Ariel pointed at Sapphire Pegasus. "Command Knight number 1 (2000 ATK), attack!"
The female knight leapt into the air and cleaved the horse in two as she descended.
Ariel – 2000 Crystal – 3100
Ariel glanced at her Cyber Blader and nodded. "Blader, direct attack!"
The figure skater hefted her new cannon and trained it on Crystal's D-Wheel.
"CYBER POWER BLAST!"
A yellowish ball of energy gathering between the forks and shot towards Crystal, causing her bike to swerve dangerously and Ariel sped on ahead.
Ariel – 2000 Crystal – 900
Ariel glanced back in astonishment as Crystal straightened her bike and began to catch up. "How...?"
Crystal grinned and gestured to the crumbling coliseum around them. "My Field Spell lets me halve the Battle Damage i take from one attack this turn by half if I have two Crystal Beasts in my Spell/Trap Zone."
Ariel smirked. "Well then, I guess I have to try again! Command Knight number 2, direct attack! Cleaver Strike Attack!"
The second female knight leapt into the air and began her descent, her glimmering swords raised above her head...
"I activate my Trap Card!" Crystal shouted. "My Rainbow Path will negate your attack by sacrificing one of my crystallized Beasts!"
Suddenly, a blue dome surrounded Crystal just as Command Knight's blade came down. As the Warrior black flipped away, Crystal continued, "Also, I get to add a certain card to my hand." Smirking, he glanced at her deck and took our her card.
Ariel grimaced. "I end my turn"
Ariel drew her next card. (Crystal Beacon) "I activate Lightning Vortex! By discarding my Terraforming, i can destroy all your monsters!"
Ariel looked up in despair as three lightning bolt came down from the heavens and blew apart her monsters. Shielding herself from the dust, she coughed out "But, you have no monsters that can beat me this turn!"
Crystal smirked. "Remember Rainbow Path...?" She held up a card in her hand.
Ariel paled. "Oh no..."
Slamming the card into a slot onto the duel disk, Crystal cried "RETURN TO ME, RAINBOW DRAGON!"
In a flash of color, the white dragon appeared and unleashed a roar of victory.
"FINISH THIS! RAINBOW REFLECTION!" Crystal ordered.
The dragon unleashed its rainbow energy, which crashed into Ariel. As she shuddered to a stop, her terminal, now smoking, flashed "Defeat" continuously.
Ariel – 0 Crystal – 900
Crystal dismounted and took off her helmet, swinging her head to get the hair out of her eyes. Looking at Ariel, she smirked. "Told you I could beat you" she said.
Ariel glumly nodded at she too got off her bike and shook hands with her opponent. "I almost had you" she complained.
Crystal winked playfully. "Almost, not definitely, Ariel." she replied.
* * *
Back at Kaiba Corp...
"Damn," Toshiro muttered, "they're good."
Jaya smirked as she recognized the gleam in her friend's eyes. "Let me guess..." she said , "you want to duel her?"
Toshiro looked at her. "Crystal? Yeah, of course! As for Ariel..." here he smirked.
Jaya stared at him. "What is it?" she asked slowly.
"I was hoping to get her number."
"TOSHIRO!!"
