Yu-Gi-Oh! The Four Virtues Episode 18: “Monster Reborn”
The doors of Kaiba Corp were kicked open. Tokyro and Mara leapt to their feet, prepare to accost the intruders, but were relieved to see Toshiro standing in the doorway…but they were then fearful when they saw the prone figure in his arms. “Toshiro!” Tokyro exclaimed. “What the hell—?” “Later” Toshiro replied curtly, jogging past them and down the corridor. Mara and Tokyro glanced at each other and ran after to him. “Tokyro!” Mara called, trying to catch up. “What happened to Jaya?” Toshiro ignored her and stormed into the infirmary. Striding over to the nearest bed, he gently put down Jaya and covered her with a blanket. A nurse with black hair walked over. “Are you in need of assistance?” she asked, smoothing her white uniform. Toshiro kept his eyes on Jaya, his face white. “She needs medical attention. I...she’s hurt pretty bad. Someone must’ve turned up the pain synthesis on the duel disk, because those attacks were real…she…she’s in real pain.” Jaya stirred. “Toshiro…” she whispered. Toshiro reached out and grasped her hand. “I’m here…don’t worry. Rest. You need it.” Jaya managed a weak nod. Her eyes were half-open, and she was breathing heavily. “Stay…please…” Toshiro gently squeezed her hand. “Of course.” Tokyro brought a chair over for Toshiro as Jaya closed her eyes. As Toshiro sat down, she began to breathe peacefully. The nurse took her temperature and examined her patient’s numerous cuts and bruises. “She should make a full recovery” she announced. “She’ll need stitches for her face, and some gauze for her burns, but she should be fine.” Toshiro breathed a sigh of relief. “Thanks you” The nurse smiled kindly, knowingly. “Take as much time as you need.” With that, she walked away. Tokyro grabbed another two chairs, and soon the three friends were all sitting next to Jaya. “Alright Toshiro, time to fill us in” Tokyro demanded. “What happened to Jaya, and why are you two all mushy-mushy?!” “First of all, we aren’t what you think we are” Toshiro replied, blushing slightly. “Secondly, she got caught in a duel.” “Against whom?!” Mara demanded. “Who has the power to inflict this much injury?!” Toshiro’s eyes hardened with inner steel. “Electra” “That b****!!” Tokyro yelled, attracting a glare from the nurse. Toshiro shook his head. “It wasn’t Electra per se. It was one of the Kaiser Assassins, her henchmen.” Mara stared at Jaya’s sleeping form. “One man…did this?” Toshiro nodded. “If one man can do this, then I shudder to imagine Electra’s power.” A gong sounded in the distance. The three turned in their seats to face the noise. “The next duel!” Mara exclaimed. Tokyro slumped in his seat. “Man, now we can’t watch it!” “Actually,” the nurse reappeared, pushing a portable monitor, “you can!” Toshiro grinned as the screen flickered to life, revealing two familiar figures. One was a girl with blue hair reaching her middle back and green eyes. She wore a white jacket with a blue shirt and torn black jeans. Her D-Wheel was light with multi-colored orbs dotting the flanks. The second figure was male. He had silver hair that reached his shoulders, but his bangs were dyed red. He wore a red blazer with white cargo pants and a white polo shirt. His D-Wheel was colored gold, with gold wing-like appendages coming out of the sides. “It’s Crystal and Ash!” Toshiro exclaimed.
* * *
“So Ash,” Crystal remarked as the two of them shuffled their decks, “why do you use that Sacred Phoenix deck? I mean, you’re the son of the great Aster Phoenix! Aren’t you entitled to his deck?” Ash shook his head, keeping his eyes glued on his cards. “No…I must earn that right. To do that, I must win.” Crystal sighed as she slipped her shuffled deck into its slot. “Look Ash, I’m a child of a famous duelist too. I know its hard living in their shadow, but you must make sure not to put to much pressure on yourself.” Ash glared at her. “You…have…no clue…what it’s like for me!” he snarled. “Then tell me!” she pleaded. Ash ignored her. Instead he spun around and strode to his ride. Crystal, sensing defeat, retreated as well. The two duelists placed their helmets on their heads, mounted their motorcycles, and shouted, “DUEL!” Then they shot down the lane, with Crystal in front by a good foot and a half.
Ash – 4000 Crystal – 4000
The two duelists drew their opening hands. Crystal’s hands consisted of Crystal Beast Emerald Tortoise, Crystal Raigeki, Rainbow Ruins, Rare Value, and Strip Mine. Ash’s hand consisted of Flame Invoker, Magician’s Circle, Phoenix Assault Cannon, Burst Summon, and Sacred Phoenix of Nephthys. “I’ll start!” Crystal announced, drawing her next card as she did so (Crystal Beast Sapphire Pegasus). “I summon Crystal Beast Emerald Tortoise in DEF mode! (2000 ATK)” A green turtle with a green shell with green crystals sprouting out of it materialized. All flesh was hidden inside the shell. The only thing visible were two beady eyes. “I’ll also set two cards facedown (Crystal Raigeki and Strip Mine) and end my turn.” Ash drew his next card (Morphing Jar). “I summon Flame Invoker in ATK mode! (1500 ATK)” The new monster that materialized besides Ash was human. It wore a gold robe with a flame design sewn across the front. Its hair---as well as its eyes—were red. “Next, I set three cards facedown (Phoenix Cannon Fire, Magician’s Circle, and Burst Summon) and end my turn.” Crystal drew her next card. (Seven Crystal Ascent) “I summon my Sapphire Pegasus in ATK mode! (1800 ATK)” A white winged horse with a blue crystal horn settled down next to the sheltered turtle. “When he’s summoned, I select one Crystal Beast from my deck and put it in my Spell and Trap Zone!” A red crystal materialized behind Sapphire Pegasus, glinting in the sunlight. “Now Sapphire Pegasus, attack!” The monster aimed its horn at the robed human and unleashed a sparkling blue cyclone at it. “Hold on!” Ash shouted, whipping his arm across his body as one of his facedowns flipped face-up. “I activate Magician’s Circle! We each select one Spellcaster in our decks and Special Summon them to the field!” Crystal scowled. “I don’t have any…” “Unfortunately for you, I do” Ash replied, selecting the desired card, “and I think I’ll play my Hand of Nephthys!” His monster was female, with a gold robe and headdress. “So what?” Crystal snorted. “It can’t stop my attack!” “No,” Ash replied, pressing a button to activate another Trap, “but Burst Summon can! This lets me Normal Summon a Fire monster during your Battle Phase!” Crystal groaned. “Don’t tell me…” “Take to the skies, my Sacred Phoenix!” Ash cried. A gold bird flew into the sky, its wings blazing. Its shriek immediately calmed the nerves of all present. (2400 ATK) Crystal scowled. “I guess I’ll cancel my attack. Instead, I’ll use Emerald Tortoise’s ability to switch Sapphire Pegasus to DEF mode! (800 DEF)” The wing horse crouched, its wings covering its body. “That ends my turn.” Ash drew his next card. (Graceful Charity) “I activate Graceful Charity to draw three cards (Flame Invoker x2 and Flaming Vortex), and discard two (both Flame Invokers). Now I activate the ability of my Flame Invokers! By removing all three copies in my graveyard from the game, I can destroy all cards on your side of the field!” A rising inferno was created from the three pairs of hands of the ghostly Flame Invokers, and it soon spread across the field, burning the two monsters, the crystal, and the facedowns. “Go Strip Mine!” Crystal shouted as the card rose through the fire and flames. “I send three cards from my deck to the graveyard (Amber Mammoth, Cobalt Eagle, and Amethyst Cat) to draw three cards! (Scapegoat, Crystal Rising, and Rainbow Dragon)” Once the cards were drawn, the flames died away, revealing an empty field. “But your field is wide open!” Ash declared. “Sacred Phoenix, direct attack!” A stream of gold fire flew from the mystical creature’s mouth straight towards the opposing female. “Scapegoat, protect me!” she cried. Four different-colored sheep appeared, forming a barrier between Crystal and the flames. “Sorry, but I activate Phoenix Cannon Fire!” Ash shouted. “My monster can attack your four monsters, dealing 500 damage to your LP for each monster he destroys!” The stream of fire turned into four separate fireballs, each of which blew apart an insignificant sheep. The flames skirted around Crystal, but they were close enough for her to feel the heat.
Ash – 4000 Crystal – 2000
Crystal, sweating profusely, drew her next card (Topaz Tiger). “I summon Topaz Tiger in ATK mode! (1600 ATK)” a black and white tiger with alternating stripes appeared. It had a wicked silver blade protruding from its forehead. Its sharps fangs were bared, reflecting off the plating of Ash’s Sacred Phoenix. “Next, I activate Crystal Rising! This Spell equips itself to my monster, increasing its ATK by 200 for each Crystal Beast in my Graveyard.” Blue, orange, green, purple, red, and cobalt energy surrounded the tiger, who roared in approval (1600 à 2800 ATK) “Now Topaz Tiger, destroy his Sacred Phoenix!” The furry ball of fury leapt at the bird, amber energy joining the multi-hue aura as its ATK increased again due to its ability (2800 à 3200 ATK). It sank its fangs into the neck of the phoenix, who shrieked in agony as it’s dissolved into flames. When Topaz Tiger returned to its original position, a golden egg had taken the destroyed monster’s place.
Ash – 3200 Crystal – 2000
“When my Sacred Phoenix is destroyed in battle, I can summon my Egg of the Sacred Phoenix in DEF mode (2500 DEF).” Ash stated. “Once my Egg hatches, my Phoenix returns.” Crystal glanced nervously at her hand, and then smiled when she examined a certain card she had drawn previously. “I’ll set one card facedown and end my turn.” Ash drew his next card…and began to laugh. Crystal glanced at him. “What?” He turned his head to face her. His eyes were glinting dangerously. “Remember my Egg? That once it hatched my Phoenix would return? Well, now we’ll see it in action, because I activate Sacred Metamorphosis! When my Egg of the Sacred Phoenix is in play, I can sacrifice it to bring back my Sacred Phoenix!” The golden egg shook as a multitude of hairline fractures appeared along the surface of the shell. It shook several times, then it exploded, and the golden bird flew into the air and let out a cry that shook the skies. “And the best thing is,” Ash continued, “when Sacred Phoenix is summoned via the Egg, it activates its ability to destroy all your Spell and Trap Cards!” The phoenix flapped its wings, and a gust of wind laced with fire blew across the field. “Go, Seven Crystal Ascent!” Crystal shouted as her card was destroyed. Ash looked at her quizzically. “What does that do?” Crystal smirked. “If I have all my Crystal Beasts on the field or in the graveyard, I can summon my ace card: RAINBOW DRAGON! (4000 ATK)” Seven beams of light—blue, red, orange, green, purple, teal, and yellow—flew into the air and swirled around each other, forming the outline of a beast. A white dragon with jewels embedded on its body and a silver horn and wings with white feathers flew up behind her and unleashed a primal roar. Ash paled. “Oh crap…” “Now the secondary effect of Seven Crystal Ascent activates!” Crystal announced. “All your monsters must attack my dragon!” Sacred Phoenix was surrounded by a rainbow aura, which caused it to fire a stream of ire at Rainbow Dragon. It seemed to glare at the bird contemptuously, and fired a retaliatory blast at the Sacred Phoenix, blowing it apart.
Ash – 1600 Crystal – 2000
Ash bowed his head as he removed the card from the duel disk and pocketed it. “When my Sacred Phoenix is destroyed after being summoned by the effect of Egg of the Sacred Phoenix, it is removed from the game.” Crystal was now ahead of Ash, both in terms of Life Points and relative position. She was feeling quite confident in her ability to win the duel and advance to the semifinals. “Your move!” Ash slowly drew his next card…then burst out laughing. Crystal looked back. “What the hell are you laughing about?!” she demanded. “You’re about to lose!” Ash, still chuckling, lifted his head to look at his opponent. “I have to thank you Crystal, for by removing my Sacred Phoenix, you’ve fulfilled the conditions of my greatest monster!” Crystal’s eyes widened. “A monster greater than Sacred Phoenix?” “I activate the Spell Card Hour of Genesis!” Ash shouted. “By paying 1000 Life Points, I can Special Summon my ultimate warrior: Genesis, Phoenix Warrior!” A portal opened, and a gold armored figure emerged. His helmet was gold, with a transparent visor revealing red pupil-less eyes. His right hand carried a flaming gold sword, and flame designs were etched into the armor on his body. Two gold wings erupted from his back. (4000 ATK) Crystal stared in wonder. “Not…bad,” she admitted, “but its ATK is only equal to my Dragon’s!” Ash smirked. “I activate its special ability! I halve its ATK so it can destroy all other cards in play!” Genesis smirked and grasped his sword’s hilt with both hands. It began to glow brighter than a thousand suns. “Reverse Genesis!” A massive shockwave erupted from the blade, and the force vaporized Rainbow Dragon and Topaz Tiger, not giving them time to make a sound. (4000 à 2000 ATK) Crystal stared, wondering how the tables had turned so quickly. “Genesis, direct attack!” Ash shouted. “Genesis Shockwave!!” The sword raised again, and this time it discharged a wave of gold fire that rolled over Crystal. Her bike overheated, and she shuddered to a stop. Her monitor was flashing ‘Defeat’ over and over again.
Ash – 100 Crystal – 0
Ash put his bike into reverse, preparing to return to Kaiba Corp. “Ash!” Crystal called. He ignored her. He shot down the lane, focused only on his goal.
