Episode 7: “Go, Go Gadget!”
Toshiro walked down a street in Domino City, his duel disk strapped to his arm. He knew the streets well: since he was twelve he wandered around the city, taking in the sites, the good and the bad. He dueled often in the alleyways, where he went by the name of “Purger”, since whomever he dueled soon were expelled from the shadows.
He kept staring forward, not acknowledging any of the people who offered congratulations for his win over Sean. He felt anxious, like something was about to happened, like he was constantly under watch…
Without thinking, Toshiro launched into a backward spin, his left leg stretched outward. His heel collided with something hard, and he heard something crash backward.
The victim swore loudly as Toshiro straightened. “Who are you?” he asked.
A black-robed figure—who had greasy black hair and grayish eyes—struggled to his feet, clutching his jaw. After cracking it back into place, he said “Jonathan Stewart, mechanic and first of the Kaiser Assassins.”
Toshiro looked coldly back. “Your point being?”
Jonathan threw back his head and laughed loudly. “You think I’m going to challenge you to a duel?! Wow, you are delusional! I just want some information.”
Toshiro still kept his indifferent appearance. “Information on what?”
Jonathan looked evenly back. “Where are those cards?”
Toshiro let his composure slip for half a second. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Jonathan snorted. “Yeah, right. Don’t play games with me, rookie. I don’t take kindly to those who do.”
Toshiro stepped closer and grabbed his collar. “You threatening me?” he asked in a soft voice.
Jonathan pried Toshiro’s hand off his collar. “No, just warning you.”
Toshiro glared. “Here’s a tip: When delivering a warning, actually have the guts to back it up.”
Jonathan smirked. “You think I’m bluffing? Well, then…” Jonathan threw off his cloak to reveal a black mechanic’s outfit and a duel disk that looked like a giant gear on his left arm. “I shall cure you of your ignorance!”
Toshiro took a few steps back, and activated his own duel disk.
“DUEL!”
Toshiro – 4000 Jonathan – 4000
The two duelists drew five cards. Jonathan, who went first, had Red Gadget, Smashing Ground, Snipe Hunter, Sealed Gold Coffer, and Newdoria. Toshiro had Stratos, Polymerization, Bubbleman, Avian, and Blue Eyes White Dragon.
“I’ll start.” Jonathan announced, drawing his next card. (Lightning Vortex) “I summon Red Gadget in DEF mode! (1500 DEF)” In a flash, the red-bodied machine with a silver gear wheel on his back appeared with its arms protecting its face. “Now I activate its ability and add Yellow Gadget to my hand. That ends my turn.”
Toshiro drew his next card. (Waboku) “I summon Elemental Hero Stratos in ATK mode! (1800 ATK)” In a flash of light, the hero with light blue armor, a light blue helmet plus a visor, and metallic wings appeared. “Now I activate his ability and add Elemental Hero Sparkman to my hand. Now, I activate Polymerization!” A multi-colored vortex appeared behind Toshiro.
“I fuse Avian, Sparkman, and Bubbleman together to form Elemental Hero Tempest! (2800 ATK)” The monster that appeared out of the multi-colored vortex had Avian’s head—with a visor—and his wings. He had Sparkman’s body with Bubbleman’s colors. On his left arm had a claw gauntlet and on his right was a futuristic blaster. “Now, Tempest, attack his Gadget! Thunderbubble Tornado!”
The hero leapt into the air and fired a stream of bubbles that crackled with electricity at Jonathan’s monster, frying its circuits and blowing it apart.
“I set my draw card facedown and end my turn” Toshiro finished as Tempest came back down in front of him.
Jonathan drew his next card. (Cyber Dragon) “Since you have a monster and I don’t, I can Special Summon my Cyber Dragon in ATK mode! (2100 ATK)” In a flash of blue electricity, the famous silver metallic dragon appeared. “Next, I summon Yellow Gadget in ATK mode! (1200 ATK)” In a flash, the yellow-bodied machine made out of gadgets appeared. “Now I activate its ability Green Gadget to my hand and play Smashing Ground to destroy your monster!”
Toshiro looked up and a giant fist came crashing down from the sky, pounding Tempest into the pavement.
Jonathan pointed at Toshiro. “Now my monsters, direct attack!”
“Trap Card open!” Toshiro commanded and the two monsters neared him. “Waboku activate! Opposing monsters deal no damage to me this turn!”
The two monsters were beaten back by an invisible shield and Jonathan smirked. “Your turn”
Toshiro drew his next card (Pot of Greed). “I activate Pot of Greed to draw two cards (Graceful Charity and King of the Swamp). Next, I activate Graceful Charity to draw three more cards (Blue Eyes White Dragon, Dragon’s Mirror, and Sakuretsu Armor) and discard two. (King of the Swamp and Blue Eyes White Dragon) Now, I activate Dragon’s Mirror! I remove Tempest, Blue Eyes White Dragon, and the Fusion Substitute King of the Swamp to Fusion Summon a monster!”
The three monsters flew up into the air and entered a glowing sliver vortex. Multi-colored lightning bolts began hitting the ground.
Toshiro kept his eyes on Jonathan. “The gathering clouds will part, and reveal the shining sun, moon, and stars!”
A blinding light cut across the field, making Jonathan shield his eyes.
“Fusion Summon!” cried Toshiro, raising a hand up to point at the parting clouds above them. “Fly on, Gold Eyes Storm Dragon! (4500 ATK)”
As the light disappeared, a majestic creature floated down in front of Toshiro. It had gold eyes and purple, blue and yellow scales. A diamond horn came out of its head, like it would a unicorn.
“Now my monster, destroy his Yellow Gadget!” Toshiro shouted. “Reverberating Divine Storm Stream!”
The dragon unleashed a stream of gold and purple energy at the machine, blowing it apart and sending pixels washing over Jonathan, making him take a couple steps back due to the wind generated by the attack.
Toshiro – 4000 Jonathan – 700
Jonathan drew his next card, panting. (Pot of Greed) “I play Pot of Greed to draw two cards. (Overload Fusion and Graceful Charity) I now play Graceful Charity to draw three cards (Iron Claw Clasp, Sakuretsu Armor, and Mystical Space Typhoon) and discard two (Green Gadget and Snipe Hunter). Now I activate Overload Fusion!”
A crackling black-silver vortex appeared behind Jonathan.
“I remove Cyber Dragon, Red Gadget, Green Gadget, and Red Gadget from the game to summon Chimeratech Overdragon! (800x4=3200 ATK)”
Toshiro gaped as the four-headed version of Cyber Dragon appeared. A masterstroke, he thought. I thought he was going to try to win by continuously smashing my defenses and attacking with his Gadgets. Instead, he pulls out the most powerful machine fusion of all time!
Then he smirked. Still, no matter how impressive it is, my Dragon is still stronger!
Jonathan noticed Toshiro’s smirked and laughed. “I can guess at what your thinking: you think you still have the upper hand because of your dragon? You won’t, not after I play this: the Equip Spell Iron Claw Clasp! By attaching itself to your monster, the equipped monster’s ATK is halved! (4500 à 2750 ATK)”
Suddenly, a giant black metal claw appear behind Toshiro’s dragon and gripped it, making it cry out in pain.
Jonathan pointed at the helpless dragon. “Chimeratech Overdragon, attack Gold Eyes Storm Dragon! Infinite Strident Blast!”
One of the four heads unleashed a blaze of orange lightning at the dragon, which stayed firm even when the blast vaporized the fist clenching it.
Toshiro – 3550 Jonathan – 700
Toshiro glanced at his dragon, and then did a double take. “Why is my dragon still weakened? Shouldn’t its attack be restored to normal?”
Jonathan smirked. “My Spell still has tricks even when its destroyed! When the equipped monster is attacked by an opposing monster, the Equip Spell is destroyed instead and its ATK remains in its weakened state.”
Toshiro grimaced, realizing that he had no chance of defeating the Chimeratech.
“Chimeratech Overdragon, finish the job!” Jonathan ordered. “Destroy his dragon with Infinite Strident Blaze!”
The second head unleashed its stream of lightning, blowing apart Gold Eyes Storm Dragon.
Toshiro – 3100 Jonathan – 700
Jonathan laughed maniacally. “Chimeratech Overdragon, finish him! Infinite Strident Blaze!”
The third blast of lightning nailed Toshiro in the chest, blowing him off his feet.
The fourth blast struck the ground in front of him…only to be blown black by a Trap Card raising out of the ground.
“What?!” Jonathan exclaimed.
Toshiro struggled to his feet. “I activated my Sakuretsu Armor in response to your third attack. Now your monster is destroyed!”
Jonathan smirked. “I activate the final ability of my Iron Claw Clasp! By removing it from my graveyard from the game, I can negate the ability of a card targeting my monster and destroying it!”
Suddenly, an iron claw erupted from the ground and crushed the Trap Card.
Jonathan smirked. “Now you can draw one card…and face your destruction!”
Toshiro looked down at his deck and placed his hand on it. Come on deck. Don’t let me down!
He slowly drew the top card…
“Chimeratech Overdragon, continue your attack!” Jonathan cried triumphantly. “Infinite Strident Blaze!”
The two blasts erupted from the mechanical beast’s mouths and sped towards its target…
“Quick Spell Activate!” Toshiro announced. “Go Scapegoat!”
In a flash, four multi-colored goats appeared on the field in front of Toshiro. The blue goat and the yellow goat were blown apart by the Overdragon’s attack.
Jonathan’s mouth fell open. “How…?!”
Toshiro looked at him. “My deck never lets me down! And that’s why…” He drew his next card and showed it to Jonathan. “I’m taking you down now! I activate Fusion’s Rebirth! By destroying every card on my side of the field and paying 2000 LP, I can Special Summon one card from my Graveyard!”
Toshiro – 1100 Jonathan – 700
Two lightning bolts struck Toshiro’s side of the field, showering its in pixels as all the cards were destroyed…and then the pixels began forming the outline of a dragon.
“Be reborn, Gold Eyes Storm Dragon!” Toshiro called out as his monster appeared and roared loudly.
Jonathan stepped back. “No…NO!”
Toshiro pointed at his opponent. “REVERBERATING DIVINE STORM STREAM!!”
The dragon opened its maw and unleashed its gold and purple energy, blowing apart the Overdragon and blasting Jonathan off his feet, making his cards fly everywhere.
Toshiro – 1100 Jonathan – 0
Toshiro deactivated his duel disk as the holograms on the field disappeared. He turned to leave…
And then spun around again, his jacket swirling behind him.
Looking up, he saw a figure standing on a neighboring roof. The person was thin, but all identifying features were covered by a black cloak.
Toshiro narrowed his eyes. “Who are you?”
The figure didn’t reply. Instead, with a swirl of the cloak, the mystery person vanished, leaving Toshiro alone with the prone form of Jonathan on the ground.
