Episode 8: “From the Ashes”
Toshiro raced up the lane towards Kaiba Corp, his jacket blowing out behind him. Just minutes before, he had defeated Jonathan, a person claiming to be part of an organization called the Kaiser Assassins. If there were more Assassins, and they were trying to get to him, they would try to find his friends and capture them.
Toshiro burst through the doors just as gong sounded. To his relief, Jaya, Mara, Fate, and Tokyro were all standing around a plasma screen watching two D-Wheels speed down the road. “Guys!”
The four whirled around. “Where have you been?!” Mara demanded.
“Yeah, the next duel is just starting!” Fate exclaimed.
Toshiro made his way over to the screen, standing between Fate and Tokyro. “Who’s up?”
“Ash Phoenix versus Ares Brody” Tokyro replied.
Toshiro narrowed his eyes at the red and silver haired duelist on a gold D-Wheel with gold wing-like parts coming out of the sides. “He feels…tortured….”

Ash Phoenix looked at his opening hand: D.D. Warrior Lady, Elemental Hero Wildheart, Reinforcement of the Army, Apprentice Magician, and Mirror Force.
“I’ll go first!” Ash announced, drawing his next card. (Sakuretsu Armor) “I summon Elemental Hero Wildheart in ATK mode! (1500 ATK)” In a flash, the Tarzan-look-alike with the large broadsword appeared.
Ash looked at his hand again and selected his Mirror Force. “I set one card facedown and end my turn.”
Ares drew his card (Molten Destruction) and looked at his hand: UFO Turtle, Ultimate Baseball Kid, Darkfire Soldier, Salamandra, and Backfire. “I activate Molten Destruction!” Ares called out, sliding the Field Spell into its appropriate card slot. Suddenly, the duelists were surrounded by a hellish, fiery environment. “Here, all my Fire Monsters gain an extra 500 ATK at the cost of 400 DEF! Now, I summon Darkfire Soldier in ATK mode! (1700 à 2200 ATK)” In a flash, the flaming, sword-wielding zombie appeared and was imbued with the powers of the fiery realm around them.
Ares turned back and pointed at Wildheart. “Now my monster, destroy Wildheart! Flaming Slash Attack!”
Darkfire Soldier leapt into the air, flipped in midair, and fell down, cleaving the hero in half.
Ares – 4000 Ash – 3300
“I set one card facedown (Backfire) and end my turn.” Ares finished.
Ash drew his next card. (Morphing Jar) “I set one monster facedown (Apprentice Magician) and set one other card facedown (Sakuretsu Armor) and end my turn.”
Ares drew his next card. (Pot of Greed) “I activate Pot of Greed to draw two cards. (Twin Swords of Flashing Light – Tryce and Monster Reborn) “I activate Twin Swords of Flashing Light – Tryce! By discarding my Ultimate Baseball Kid, I can equip this card to Darkfire Soldier and, by decreasing its ATK by 500, its can attack twice! (2200 à 1700 ATK) Now, I summon UFO Turtle in ATK mode! (1400 à 1900 ATK)” In a flash, the turtle with the metal shell appeared. “Next, I activate Monster Reborn to bring back the card I discarded: Ultimate Baseball Kid! (500 à 1000 ATK)” In another flash, the little kid with a big bat appeared. “And thanks to his ability, his ATK increases by 1000 for every other Fire monster on my side of the field! (1000 à 3000 ATK)”
Ash gaped at the huge force assembled in front of him. “Holy crap…”
Ares turned his bike around so he was driving backwards. “Darkfire Soldier, attack! Crush his facedown monster!”
Darkfire Soldier leapt at the card, cleaving it in half and revealing it to the opposing player.
“That was my Apprentice Magician!” Ash shouted. “When its Flipped when its destroyed, I can Set my Hand of Nephthys!” In a flash, another facedown monster appeared.
Ares laughed. “For whatever good that will do you! UFO Turtle, destroy his facedown!”
The small turtle began to charge the card…
“Trap Card Activate!” Ash cried. “My Mirror Force will destroy all your monsters!”
As the turtle was about to bash its target, a transparent blast of energy emitted from Ash’s Trap Card, blowing Ares’ three monsters away.
Ares snarled as he faced the road again. “Its your move.”
Ash drew his next card. (Exiled Force) “I summon D.D. Warrior Lady in ATK mode! (1500 ATK)” In a flash, the armor-clad, futuristic female warrior appeared. “Next, I Flip Summon Hand of Nephthys!” In another flash, the female with a gold dress and headdress appeared. “Now, I activate her ability! I sacrifice my two monsters to Special Summon my trump card: THE SACRED PHOENIX OF NEPHTHYS! (2400 ATK)”
As the two monsters disappeared, a pillar of fire erupted next to Ash. When it vanished, the gold bird with fiery-gold wings appeared.
“And thanks to your Field Spell, its ATK is increased by 500! (2400 à 2900 ATK) Now my monster, direct attack! Sacred Firestorm!”
The majestic bird opened its beak and unleashed gold-red fire at Ares, smothering him and slowing him down until Ash sped ahead of him.
Ares – 1100 Ash – 3300
Ares drew his next card. (Graceful Charity) “I activate Graceful Charity to draw three cards (Call of the Haunted, UFO Turtle, and Inferno) and discard two (UFO Turtle and Inferno). I set one card facedown (Call of the Haunted) and end my turn.”
Ash drew his next card (Pot of Greed). “Sacred Phoenix, direct attack! Finish him with Sacred Firestorm!”
The gold bird unleashed another stream of gold fire at Ares…
“Go Trap Card!” Ares shouted as Call of the Haunted revealed itself. “UFO Turtle, revive yourself!”
The metal turtle reappeared in a flash of light and was blown apart by the incoming blast of fire.
Ares – 100 Ash – 3300
“Trap Card, go!” Ares shouted. “Backfire activate! With this, you take 500 damage whenever you destroy a Fire monster in battle!”
Ares – 100 Ash – 2800
“Now I activate the ability of UFO Turtle and summon my last one in ATK mode!” In a flash, another turtle appeared. (1400 à 1900 ATK)
“I activate Pot of Greed to draw two cards.” Ash announced (Monster Reborn and Call of the Haunted). “Next, I summon Exiled Force in ATK mode! (1000 ATK)” In a flash, the legion of soldiers appeared. “Now I activate its ability! By sacrificing it, I can destroy your monster!”
The soldiers charged the turtle and stabbed it, blowing them both up.
“Next, I set one card facedown (Call of the Haunted) and end my turn.” Ash finished.
Ares drew his next card. (Hell’s Contract). “I activate Hell’s Contract! By sacrificing my Field Spell, I can summon one Fire monster from my deck, ignoring its summoning conditions!”
The landscape surrounding the duelists disappeared and a gigantic ball of flame appeared beside Ares.
“Come forth, my burning soul!” Ares shouted. “I summon you, Infernal Flame Emperor!”
The fireball exploded, revealing a centaur-like creature made entirely of fire. (2900 ATK) (Phoenix: 2900 à 2400 ATK)
“Now I activate its ability!” Ares shouted. “By removing all the Fire monsters in my graveyard from the game, I can destroy all monsters on your side of the field!”
The images of the five monsters in Ares’ graveyard appeared behind the monster, and flew into his body. Suddenly, the monster turned around and unleashed a wide burst of fire, obliterating all monsters on Ash’s field.
“Infernal Flame Emperor, direct attack!” Ares shouted. “Burning Hellfire Strike!”
The fire centaur cupped its hands together and fired a bolt of fire at Ash…
“Call of the Haunted, go!” he shouted. “Be reborn, Sacred Phoenix!” In a flash, the gold phoenix reappeared, just to disappear again as it took the Emperor’s attack.
Ares – 100 Ash – 2300
Ash drew his next card. (Flame Vortex) “I activate Monster Reborn to bring back my Sacred Phoenix.” In a flash, the gold bird reappeared. “Next, I activate Flame Vortex! By equipping it to my monster, its ATK is increased by 1000! (2400 à 3400)”
A fiery vortex surrounded the Sacred Phoenix and the monster absorbed it, making it glow with red light.
“Sacred Phoenix, attack Infernal Flame Emperor!” Ash cried. “Sacred Firestorm!”
“I activate the ability of Hell’s Contract!” Ares shouted. “I remove it from the game to negate this battle, increase my monster’s ATK by 1000 until the end of turn, and have the two monsters do battle again!”
As the swirling storm of gold-and-red fire neared it, Infernal Flame Emperor cupped its hands and unleashed a blast of fire into it. The two streams of energy went back and forth for a minute, until they exploded and a wave of fire neared Ash and his monster.
“I activate the ability of Flame Vortex!” Ash shouted. “I negate this battle and my equip card destroys my Sacred Phoenix!”
The incoming wave surrounded the monster and pulsed for a few minutes before exploding.
“That concludes my turn!” Ash announced. “And at my End Phase, guess who comes back?” In a flash, his favorite monster appeared once more in ATK mode.
Ares drew his next card. (Flame Sigil) “I activate Flame Sigil! By equipping it to Infernal Flame Emperor, I can increase its ATK by 300 for every FIRE monster that’s removed from play!”
Suddenly, a gold star appeared on Infernal Flame Emperor’s head, infusing it with a gold aura. (2900 à 4400)
“Infernal Flame Emperor, attack!” Ares ordered. “Hell’s Revenge!”
The fire beast opened its mouth and unleashed a red-black blast of fire, which blew apart the gold bird.
Ares – 100 Ash – 300
Panting, Ash drew his next card. (Sacred Hurricane) “I activate Sacred Hurricane! I can revive my Sacred Phoenix and destroy all Spell and Trap Cards on the field!”
In a flash, the gold phoenix reappeared. With two giant flaps of its wings, a gust of wind blew across the road, shattering Infernal Flame Emperor’s Equip Spell. (4400 à 2900 ATK)
Ash fingered the last card in his hand. “By the way, whenever a Fire Monster is Special Summoned, a certain card comes back.”
Suddenly, Sacred Phoenix was surrounded by a vortex of fire that was soon absorbed. (2400 à 3400 ATK)
Ares turned around and stared. “No…that means…”
“GAME OVER!!” Ash shouted. “SACRED PHOENIX, ATTACK! SACRED FIRESTORM!!”
The phoenix unleashed its gold fire, blowing apart Ares’ last monster. He skidded to a halt, his terminal smoking and flashing “Defeat”
Ares – 0 Ash – 300
* * *
Toshiro switched off the TV screen and let out a breath. “Wow” he said.
Tokyro nodded. “It was a nice comeback by Ares…”
“But an even better victory by Ash” Jaya finished.
Mara looked at Toshiro, whose eyes were still locked on the blank TV screen. “What’s up Toshiro?”
Toshiro turned to face his friends. “Why did he refuse to let his Sacred Phoenix die?”

Elsewhere…
A slim female was putting on her black coat when another black-robed person ran into the room.
“I hope you have a good excuse for intruding” she snarled cuttingly.
The newcomer bowed hastily. “Forgive me, Mistress.” He replied softly. “But I have to make a report.”
The female stepped out from behind her dressing curtain and looked at herself in the mirror. “Well, what is it then?”
“Ash Phoenix emerged as the victor in the most recent duel.” The robed man said.
The woman smirked. “Exactly as foreseen” She turned around and slipped a deck out of her pocket. “Now it’s time for me to take center stage.”
Suddenly, a phantom image of a metallic, spiky dragon appeared behind her. “Those dragons will be mine, no matter the cost.”
