Yu-Gi-Oh! Battle of the Heavens

Episode 58: “Blast from the Past, Part 2”

Atem glared at Anubis. Atem had taken Team Evolution’s place in the battle of the world. Right now, the field was pretty much even: Atem had two monsters with over 2000 attack while Anubis had three tokens that turned into living bombs. However, Anubis was leading to Life Point count 350 to 200. It was now the second main phases of Atem’s turn.

“I set two cards facedown (Phoenix Fire and Flames of Rebirth) and end my turn” Atem said as two cards materialized on the field.

Anubis drew his next card. (The Wicked Eraser) “I now sacrifice my three tokens to summon a creature whose power exists only in your imagination: THE WICKED ERASER!!”

The three crouching fiends erupted in three separate balls of flame. They then rose into the air, turning the air around them fiery red. The air parted and a dark dragon that looked remarkably like Slifer the Sky Dragon floated down and took its place in front of Anubis.

Anubis grinned. “For every card on your side of the field, my monster gains 1000 ATK points, raising its ATK to 4000!”

Atem paled and quickly activated a facedown card. “I activate the Quick-Play Spell Phoenix Fire! All I have to do is remove a monster with Phoenix in its name from anywhere from the game and I get to prevent all damage that would be dealt this turn!”

Anubis’ grin grew even wider. “I now activate the special ability of my Eraser! By sending this card to the grave, I can reset the field!”

The Wicked God imploded and the shockwaves spread out everywhere. Thinking fast, Atem motioned to his last facedown. “I activate the Trap Card Flames of Rebirth! This lets me Special Summon one Phoenix monster from outside the game and I’ll choose…Sacred Phoenix of Nephthys!”

The majestic firebird rose into the air and let out a screech, but it was quickly destroyed by the shockwave.

Anubis chuckled. “Well, that was…a…waste…WHAT?!?!”

This outburst was due to the fact that Atem’s Sacred Phoenix had just magically risen out of the ground in a flash of fire. (1600 DEF)

“HOW?!?!”

Atem smirked. “Whenever my Phoenix is destroyed by a card effect, I can Special Summon it to the field! However, since I used Flames of Rebirth, several things happen: 1. You can summon one monster from your deck and 2. I can take one card from my grave (Phoenix Fire) and add it to my hand at the cost of my next turn.”

Anubis smirked and announced. “I choose to summon my Ancient Skeleton in DEF Mode! (200 DEF) Now, I draw (Time Lapse) and I activate Time Lapse! This speeds up time by two turns! And since my Sacred Offerings is still in play…”

“Wait! I thought Wicked Eraser destroyed all cards on the field?” Atem protested.

Anubis grinned. “Sacred Offerings can’t be destroyed by a card effect. Anyway, since it technically has been three turns, I can send my Trap Card to the grave to summon my three ultimate beasts: URIA, LORD OF SEARING FLAMES! (1000 ATK) HAMON, LORD OF STRIKING THUNDER! (4000 ATK) RAVEL, LORD OF PHANTASMS! (4000 ATK) RISE MY SACRED BEASTS!”

Atem paled as the three evil God cards rose up in front of Anubis. “I activate the Quick-Play spell Phoenix Fire! By removing my Sacred Phoenix from play, I can prevent all damage dealt this turn!”

Anubis shrugged. “It’s your move”

Atem drew his next card. (Realms of Chaos) “I activate…REALMS OF CHAOS!”

Anubis laughed. “You know that you can kill yourself with that card, don’t you?”

Atem glared right back. “I don’t care! If this will beat you, it must be done. I get to flip three coins. If one is heads, nothing happens. If two are heads, All my creatures are destroyed and you win the duel. If all three coins are heads however, all your creatures are destroyed and I win the duel!”

Three holographic coins appeared in front of Atem. Pointing at them, he cried “Let’s go for a spin! Coin one, flip!”

The coin flew high in the air and landed on the ground with a clatter. It jumped up for a second, spun a few times, and landed on heads.

“Coin two, flip!”

The second coin went into the air as well and then it landed on its side. After rolling around for a few seconds, it fell down to reveal heads.

Anubis was pale and his mouth was hanging open. Atem looked at the last coin.

“Coin three...flip.”

The final coin, the one that held the fate of the world in balance, flew into the air. It came down spinning and flipping. When it made contact, it jumped into the air again, this time landing on its side. It rolled in a complete circle around the playing field. Two pairs of eyes were glued to its every move. Finally, it fell, unmoving, in the exact center of the field. Showing for all to see was…

“Heads” Atem said simply.

Anubis’ scream of fury went unheard as all three coins exploded, causing a chain reaction as each of the Sacred Beasts exploded as well. When the dust settled, Anubis was lying on his back, unmoving, not breathing. His life counter was at 0.

Atem had enough time for one last thought as his life energy left him and went shooting towards the prone figures of Violet, Greg, and Sophia behind him. My duty…is done.

Heat…lots of it…something hurting his eyes…

Ball of energy…a falling gauntlet…Violet!

Greg’s eyes snapped open.

He was lying on the ground with his duel disk on his arm. The wind was gently blowing, soothing his sunburned face. He struggled to his elbows, wincing as his stiff muscles screamed in pain. Suddenly, a pair of arms wrapped around him and he was being hauled onto someone’s lap. That someone began to rock him back and forth, and Greg could feel the tears dripping onto his head.

“Please forgive me Greg…I never meant to hurt you the way I did. I love you…so much…”

The one holding him was Violet. Greg felt a rush of affection and, surprising them both, he turned around, wrapped his arms around her, and kissed her.

When they broke apart, Greg cupped her face in his hands. “You’re forgiven Violet. How could I not? I’ve loved you for a long time and I’m not going to stop now”

Violet gave a watery grin and buried her face into his shoulder. Greg held her, content. Kissing her head, Greg whispered “It’s almost over Violet. It’s almost over…”
