Episode 54: “Scars Never Fade”
“So you’re telling me” Greg said “That you and Violet have your own gauntlets?”
The two of them were walking towards Jaden’s office. They had been talking for a while now and sharing their adventures.
“Yeah” Sophia replied. “Violet had a pure white one with a golden halo on the palm area. I’ve got a blue with white lightning all over it.”
“Fairies and White Lightning Attack” Greg murmured. “Tempest, you know us well.”
“Johan is going to be ecstatic we’re back outside” Sophia said. “He—and everyone else—misses you.”
“Wait, he’s outside?!” Greg exclaimed.
“Yeah, they’re standing guard”
“Do you think they’re alright?”
“’Course they are”
Then a new voice said, “Sorry to interrupt this lovely banter, but I cannot allow you to go any further.”
The cousins looked up and saw a figure blocking the hallway. Sophia thought he looked a lot like Spiderman: He was wearing all red with black lines criss-crossing his entire body. He had a black cape, a red mask, and skeletal hands.
“Who are you?” Greg asked.
“I think you meant ‘what are you?’” Sophia murmured so only Greg could hear.
“I’m Scar, Anubis’ right hand man” Scar said. “And I’m afraid he doesn’t want to be disturbed.”
“I thought Bakura was the second” Sophia interjected.
“Bakura? Second in command? Ha! That fool couldn’t keep his duel monsters in line!”
Greg crossed his arms. “Well, we have to go through. And you won’t stop us!”
“How about this?” Scar suggested. “A duel. You win, and I’ll teleport you directly to Anubis’ lair. You lose, and your souls are mine!”
“Agreed” Greg said as he activated his disk and inserted his deck.
“Oh yes, one more thing” Scar continued, a malicious gleam in his eyes. “We duel in the shadows”
As soon as his sentence was complete, the corridor around them vanished. Instead, they were in the Shadow Realm.
“It’s time to duel” Scar said calmly.
Greg – 8000 Scar – 8000
The two duelists drew five cards. Greg had Avian, Hero City, Hero Signal, Polymerization, and Negate Attack. Not the best hand I could’ve asked for, Greg thought. Oh well…
Scar was looking at his hand: Kahkki-Guerilla of Dark World, Dark World Dealings, Dark World Lightning, Sillva-Warlord of Dark World, and Zure-Knight of Dark World. Soon, this boy will fall to the power of darkness!
Greg drew his card. (Sparkman) “I activate Hero City! This Field Spell allows me to bring back a hero every turn. I now summon Elemental Hero Avian in ATK mode! (1000 ATK) I then set a card facedown (Hero Signal) and end my turn.”
Scar drew his next card. (Negate Attack) “I activate Dark World Dealings! We each draw one card, (Greg: Burstinatrix, Scar: Broww-Huntsman of Dark World) and discard one. (Greg: Negate Attack, Scar: Kahkki) And since I discarded my Kahkki, Guerilla of Dark World I get to destroy your Avian! I now summon Zure, Knight of Dark World! (1800 ATK) Now, attack Greg directly with Dark World Slash!”
“OUCH!” Greg yelped as Zure slashed his sword across his stomach. Clutching it, he moaned. “That hurt…”
“Of course it did, you fool!” Scar snapped. “This is a Shadow Game! Here, the monsters—and their attacks—are real!”
Greg – 6200 Scar – 8000
Greg drew his next card. (Heated Heart) “I activate my Hero City’s ability, so Avian comes back from the dead! But he won’t be here long, because I activate Polymerization! I fuse Avian and Burstinatrix together to form Elemental Hero Flame Wingman! (2100 ATK) I’ll also throw out my Sparkman in ATK mode. (1600 ATK) I’ll then activate Heated Heart to give Sparkman 500 more ATK for this turn. (2100 ATK) Flame Wingman, attack Zure with Skydive Scorcher! Sparkman, attack Scar directly! And thanks to my Wingman, you take damage equal to Zure’s ATK!”
Greg – 6200 Scar – 3700
Scar, still wincing from Greg’s attack, drew his next card. (Scarr, Scout of Dark World) “I activate Dark World Lightning! I get to destroy your facedown and I get to discard a card. (Sillva) now I Special Summon Sillva, Warlord of Dark World! (2300 ATK) Now, attack Sparkman! I then set one card facedown (Negate Attack) and end my turn”
Greg – 5500 Scar – 3700
Greg drew his next card. (Pot of Greed) “I activate Pot of Greed! I get to draw two more cards. (Miracle Fusion and Future Fusion) I now activate Future Fusion! I send the Avian, Burstinatrix, Clayman, Sparkman, and Bubbleman in my deck to the graveyard so I get summon Elemental Hero Electrum in two turns. And don’t forget Hero City, which brings back Sparkman. I then activate Miracle Fusion! I remove Sparkman and Flame Wingman from play to summon Elemental Hero Shining Flare Wingman! (2500 ATK) And thanks to his ability, he gains 300 ATK for every Hero in my graveyard. (300 x 7=2100, 2500 + 2100=4600 ATK) SHINING FLARE WINGMAN, ATTACK SILLVA WITH THUNDERFORCE STRIKE AND END THIS DUEL!”
“I activate Negate Attack, which will cancel your attack and end your battle phase” Scar said calmly.
Greg scowled and motioned for his opponent to continue.
Scar drew his card. (Pot of Greed) “I activate Pot of Greed! This lets me draw two cards. (Ring of Destruction and Ring of Defense) I set two cards facedown and then I activate them both: Ring of Destruction and Ring of Defense! I get to destroy your hero and deal you 4600 damage while I remain safe!”
As Flare Wingman exploded, Greg was thrown into the air by the explosion. He hit the ceiling as collapsed to the floor, the heat of the explosion washing over him.
Greg – 900 Scar – 3700
Greg remained unmoving on the floor.
“If you don’t get up in the next five minutes, you forfeit the match!” Scar said.
Greg stirred and slowly rose to his feet. “I may be down…but I’m not out!”
Scar glared at his opponent.
“While I’m recuperating, how about you tell me about yourself?” Greg suggested, panting and holding his back. “How come you’re working for Anubis?”
Scar was silent and then he sighed. “My wife died in a plane crash a few years ago. Anubis came to me and said if I helped him take over the world, he would bring back my wife. So, I’ve been with him since.”
“Anubis can’t raise the dead, Scar.” Greg said. “He manipulated you”
“NO HE DIDN’T!” Scar roared. “MY WIFE WILL COME BACK!”
“Listen to me” Greg urged. “I know how you’re feeling! When I was young, about 9-10, I had a girlfriend. Back then, she was the love of my life. But then she was murdered by someone. A year later, a friend of mine came to me and asked if I would help her. She said that she’d helped me get revenge. Right when I was about to answer, my mind flashed back to the day of the murder. I realized that my friend murdered my girlfriend out of jealousy. After that, I vowed to protect my loved ones from evil, no matter what.”
Greg stared at Scar, who was largely silent. “You still have time Scar. You can turn away from the darkness. The first step is accepting that some scars will never fade.”
Scar remained silent and Greg drew his next card. (Reinforcement of the Army) “Thanks to my Hero City, I can bring back Clayman in DEF mode. (2000 DEF) I now activate Reinforcement of the Army to take a Burstinatrix from my deck to my hand.”
Scar drew his next card. (Reckless Greed) “I activate my Reckless Greed to draw two cards at the cost of my next two draw phases (Reign-Beaux, Overlord of Dark World and Change of Heart). I now activate my Change of Heart on your Clayman so I can sacrifice my two monsters in order to summon my most powerful creature: REIGN-BEAUX, OVERLORD OF DARK WORLD! (2500 ATK)”
Greg waited but no attack came. “Well? What are you waiting for? Attack!”
“No”
Greg shrugged. “Suit yourself.” And then he drew his card. (Reckless Greed) “I activate my Reckless Greed to draw two cards. (Bladedge and Miracle Fusion) Oh, yeah, I hope you didn’t forget Future Fusion, because now two turns have passed and that means I get a new monster: Elemental Hero Electrum! (2900 ATK) Oh, and he counts as ALL attributes and for every monster on your side of the field that shares an attribute with him, Electrum gains 300 ATK! (3200 ATK) And now I’ll activate Miracle Fusion! I’ll remove Burstinatrix and Clayman from play…along with my Bladedge…to summon my newest hero: ELEMENTAL HERO MAGMUS! (3000 ATK) I guess you can call him Elemental Hero Magma Neos’ cousin. He gains 500 ATK for every card on the field, 200 more than Neos (4500 ATK), and when he’s destroyed, all cards on the field go back to their respective hands. But that’s not going to happen, because I’M ENDING THIS RIGHT NOW! ELEMENTAL HERO MAGMUS, ATTACK THE OVERLORD WITH MAGMA SLASH!”
Greg – 900 Scar – 1700
“ELEMENTAL HERO ELECTRUM, ATTACK SCAR DIRECTLY WITH ELEMENTAL BLAST!”
Greg – 900 Scar – 0
Greg walked towards Scar, who was still lying on the ground. Ignoring Sophia’s protests, he helped Scar to his feet. “You alright?”
Scar nodded. “Now I must complete my end of the bargain. I will give you a one-way ticket to Anubis’ lair.”
Scar turned as if to walk away, but Greg grabbed his arm again. “Scar…when you summoned your last monster…why didn’t you attack? In fact, why didn’t you attack all the times you had a chance to land a killing blow?”
Scar turned back to face Greg. “Your words spoke to me. I understood why you wanted to go by and I respected that. From now on, I promise you I will do whatever I can to aid you in your quest. And if your descendents continue your quest, I will look after them too”
Greg realized this was the highest honor to be bestowed onto a person. He held out his gauntlet hand.
Scar took a look at it and shook it. At once, green, purple, and orange electricity flowed between their hands. When they released, Scar looked at his hand: on his palm was a scar: the fang of Critias.
“Come” Scar motioned and he walked down the hall. Greg and Sophia followed, both of them wondering what lay in store…and why they would need Scar’s help in the future.
