Episode 55: “Guardian of the Tombs, Part 1”
Violet was walking down a hallway in Duelist Academy. She was on her way to Jaden’s old office so she could take down Anubis. But her mind kept betraying her.
What if Anubis isn’t there? She wondered. What happens if this is all one big—
Her thoughts were interrupted by her walking in a door. Rubbing her forehead, she peered hard at the plaque on the door. She could just make out the words Jaden Yuki, Chancellor.
“Bingo” Violet whispered. She reached out for the handle…
When, with a loud CRACK, some materialized on her back!
“Scar, where are we?” a girl’s voice said.
The guy named Scar said “Sophia, use your eyes. We’re at Jaden’s office”
Violet managed to gasp out “Can someone get off of me?”
“Violet?!” Sophia exclaimed. “What are you doing down there?!”
“You materialized on my back!”
“Oops…” she got off Violet and helped her to her feet. “You okay?” Sophia asked.
Violet felt her back. “A little sore, but that’s all”
Scar looked at Violet. “Who’s she?”
“My girlfriend” another voice said.
Violet stared behind Scar, not daring to believe it: Walking down the hallway towards them was Greg in perfectly good health.
“GREG!!” she cried, running to him and pulling him into a hug. Greg, after a slight moment of shock, retuned the favor. Then, after the hug, Violet socked her boyfriend in the mouth, stunning Sophia and Scar.
Greg bounced to his feet. “WHAT THE HECK WAS THAT-” However, he was cut off by a kiss from Violet.
After they broke apart, Violet grinned. “What were you saying?”
Greg shrugged. “I forgot”
Sophia cleared her throat. “I hate to interrupt this touching reunion, but I believe that Anubis is waiting for us”
Greg shook himself. “Yeah, right…”
With Scar in the lead, they pushed open the door to Jaden’s office to discover…
“Wow, Sophia, did you help with the decorating of this place?” Greg asked, earned a sharp rap on the head from his cousin.
Jaden’s office had changed since the formation of Team Evolution. Instead of carpet, there was sand. Hieroglyphs lined the walls. Miniature pyramids dotted the landscape. Palm trees stood where the windows used to be.
“Well, at least we know he likes Egyptian things” Sophia muttered.
“Well, he IS the guardian of the tombs, you know” Scar commented from the front.
“But where the heck is he?!” Greg asked in frustration.
“Right here” said a low voice from behind them.
The four of them spun around. Standing behind them was a man with scars all over his hard face. He had a gray cape and pitch-black eyes. On his arm was a duel disk and he wore a pendent around his neck. He had blonde hair and a harsh grin.
Greg’s eyes narrowed. “Anubis, I presume?”
“Correct” Anubis said, walking forward. “I see that you have discovered by lair”
“Took awhile” Sophia muttered.
“Quiet Pharaoh” Anubis warned. “Or your cousin pays the price”
“Take your best shot!” Greg challenged.
Anubis smiled and raised his hand. Purple shadow-like lightning bolts flew from his fingertips and stuck Greg. With a cry he fell to the ground, twitching as the lightning struck him over and over again.
“GREG!” Violet screamed. She made to fling herself next to her boyfriend, but Sophia restrained her. “WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU DOING?!” Violet yelled.
“Watch” said Sophia.
Violet turned to Greg, who had stopped screaming, even though Anubis was still pouring shadow lightning at him. Then, to her amazement, Greg started to glow with green light, and got to his feet. Violet noticed that Greg was actually absorbing the lightning now. Risking a glance, Violet saw Anubis looking downright terrified.
“You can’t harm me with shadows” Greg said, and he launched the absorbed lightning back at Anubis, sending him sprawling.
Getting to his feet, Anubis growled. “If you will not crack, then your girlfriend will!” And with that, he unleashed shadow lightning at Violet. But before they could reach her, Greg stepped into the line of fire and sent it back at Anubis.
“If you want to harm them, you’ll have to get through me” Greg said.
“Fine, if you won’t give your souls voluntarily, I’ll duel you for them!” Anubis said, activating a black duel disk. “You win, and I’ll give up my soul. I win, and your souls are gone!”
Greg looked at Sophia and Violet. “Ready?”
“I’m with you till the end” Sophia replied.
“If you think I’m letting you go again, you’ve got another thing coming!” Violet said fiercely.
Greg smiled. “Alright gang, let’s do this!”
Anubis – 8000 Team Evolution – 8000
“Alright here are the rules!” Anubis said as they drew their opening hands. “You three share life points. You cannot share strategies or cards in your hands. However, you can share cards you have on the field. No one can attack on the first round. Agreed?”
“Yeah, yeah, yeah. Just get on with it” Greg said.
(Anubis: Pyramid of Light, Giant Germ, Monster Reborn, Wicked God Eraser, Sands of Time. Greg: Avian, Burstinatrix, Polymerization, Draining Shield, Hero City. Sophia: Lord of Dragons, Flute of Summoning Dragon, Blue Eyes White Dragon x2, Pot of Greed. Violet: Shining Angel, Solar Ray, Scapegoat, Tyuratin, Sanctuary in the Sky)
Greg drew his first card. (Sparkman) “I activate Hero City! This Field Spell allows me to revive one of my Elemental Heroes every turn. I now activate Polymerization! I fuse Avian and Burstinatrix together to form Elemental Hero Phoenix Enforcer! (2100 ATK) I set one card facedown (Draining Shield) and end my turn.”
Sophia drew her card. (Polymerization) “I summon my Lord of Dragons in DEF mode! (1100 DEF) I now activate Flute of Summoning Dragon! This spell card allows me to Special Summon two Dragons from my hand so behold my two Blue Eyes White Dragons! (3000 ATK) I now end my turn.”
Violet drew her next card. (Airknight Parshath) “I set one card facedown (Scapegoat) and end my turn.”
Anubis drew his next card. (Pot of Greed) “I activate Pot of Greed so I can draw two extra cards. (Andro Sphinx and Sphinx Teleia) I now activate Pyramid of Light! And now, by paying 1000 LP…”
Anubis – 7000 Team Evolution – 8000
“I can Special Summon these two monsters to the field: Andro Sphinx (3000 ATK) and Sphinx Teleia (2500 ATK)! I now activate Sands of Time! This special Spell card destroys any of your monsters if it is on the field for more than 4 turns!”
“That’s cheap!” Greg yelled. “There has to be a catch!”
“Yeah!” Sophia put in. “No card is that strong, except for the God Cards and the Sacred Beasts!”
Anubis shrugged. “Your move”
Greg drew his next card. (Clayman) “Thanks to my Hero City, I can bring back Avian in DEF mode! (1000 DEF) I now summon Clayman in DEF mode (2000 DEF), switch Phoenix Enforcer to DEF mode (1500 DEF), and end my turn.”
Sophia drew her next card. (Kishido Spirit) “I activate my Kishido Spirit! This spell card allows me to spare my Blue Eyes when it attacks a monster with the same ATK points. Blue Eyes White Dragons, attack Andro Sphinx and Sphinx Teleia!”
Anubis – 6500 Team Evolution – 8000
Anubis began laughing. Violet’s eyes narrowed. “What’s so funny? Your Life Points are wide open and its my turn”
Anubis flashed an evil grin. “I’m laughing because your friend fell right into my trap! I pay 500 LP…
Anubis – 6000 Team Evolution - 8000
“So I can special summon one of my most powerful monsters: THEINEN THE GREAT SPHINX! (3500 ATK)”
As the great beast rose out of the sands and onto the field, Team Evolution glared at Anubis. Greg bared his teeth and watched Anubis prepare to draw his next card. This isn’t over.
