Episode 52: “The Man with the Red Eyes”
BANG! BANG! BANG!
“OPEN UP THIS DOOR OR WE’LL OPEN IT FOR YOU!” Violet screeched at the top of her lungs as she banged on the gates of Duelist Academy.
“Violet, you really need to calm down” Sophia implored.
Violet rounded on her friend and screamed “DON’T TELL ME TO CALM DOWN! GREG’S BEEN KIDNAPPED AND I INTEND TO GET HIM BACK!”
Sophia sighed and scratched the back of her head. Violet had been like that all day. Every since she tore into the fugitive camp that morning, Violet had been on the edge and ready to explode. She’s probably feeling guilty since Greg disappeared from right under her nose, Sophia thought. Not to mention she’s probably worried sick since Greg probably had a broken back the last time she saw him.
Suddenly, the wind picked up, causing dust to be blown into the air. The assembled duelists—Violet, Sophia, Rose, Alexis, and some students from the school—covered their faces as the wind howled and bits of sand pelted their bodies. When the wind died down, Sophia noticed that a person was blacking the gates to the Academy. He had black hair, red eyes, and a fireball crest on his black leather armor. There’s something about this guy…he seems familiar…
The man smiled. “Welcome back Team Evolution. Ready to lose again?”
“Who the heck are you?” Violet spat out.
“Don’t you remember me, Sophia?” the man said, ignoring Violet completely. “The one that beat you?”
“Ryo” breathed Sophia.
“That’s right” Ryo said as a black duel disk materialized on his arm and was activated. “And in order to save your leader” he continued, sliding his deck in, “you have to get past me first! And when you lose, you’re soul goes to the Shadow Realm!”
Before Sophia could step forward, Violet was activating her duel disk and putting her deck in. “I accept your challenge, Ryo!”
“Hold it!” Sophia said. “If your challenge him, you’ll need help!” Taking two cards out of her deck, she gave them to Violet. “I think they will fit nicely with Solar Flare.” She added.
“Hey!” exclaimed Johan. “Don’t forget about us!” Taking two cards from his deck, he gave them to Violet. Mars, Alexis, Rose, and Chazz did the same thing. Tyranno refused to give any of his cards away.
Giving all her friends a smile, Violet shuffled her deck and faced Ryo. “Now I’m ready…to win!”
Violet – 8000 Ryo – 8000
The duelists drew five cards. Violet looked at her hand: Shining Angel, Polymerization, Solar Flare, Marie the Fallen One, and Graceful Charity. Not bad, Violet mused…but not that good either.
Ryo was barely managing to keep his face from spreading into a malicious grin. My hand is the same exact one that I had when I beat Sophia! This will be a piece of cake!
“Ladies first!” Violet called out as she drew her card. (Angelic Intervention) “I summon Shining Angel in ATK mode! (1400 ATK) I end my turn.”
“And your life on Earth!” Ryo crowed as he drew his next card. (Pot of Greed) “I activate Graceful Charity! This lets me draw three cards (2 Luster Dragons and Inferno Blitz) and discard two (Luster Dragon x2). I then summon my Red Eyes B. Chick and sacrifice it to summon my Red Eyes Black Dragon! (2400 ATK) I then activate 2 Inferno Fire Blasts, which deals you 4800 damage!”
Violet – 3200 Ryo – 8000
“But that’s not all!” Ryo continued. “I then sacrifice my monster to summon the one…the only…RED EYES DARKNESS DRAGON! (2400 ATK) and since I have 4 dragons in my grave, his attack rises to 3600! I then activate Pot of Greed! This lets me draw 2 cards. (Infernal Rage and Titanic Crush) I then activate Inferno Rage! Since you have a monster on the field, Darkness Dragon’s ATK is increased by your Angel’s ATK! (5000 ATK) YOU’RE THROUGH! RED EYES DARKNESS DRAGON, ATTACK HER SHINING ANGEL WITH DARK FLAME!”
“Hold it!” Violet yelled. “I activate Angelic Intervention!”
As the black flames neared the Shining Angel, a golden barrier appeared in front of Violet’s monster, absorbing the attack.
“What the heck happened?!” Ryo yelled furiously. “You didn’t have any facedowns!”
Violet smiled slowly. “Oh, didn’t I mention that if I had a Fairy-type monster on the field, I could activate Angelic Intervention from my hand? And also, it’s a Continuous Spell card that absorbs all your attacks as long as I keep paying 1000 LP every turn”
Ryo then laughed loudly. “Then you’re already soulless because you’ll kill yourself with your own card! Face it, you have 3 turns left on Earth.”
Violet’s grin grew. “Oh, but I have more than that. Because in those three turns, I’m going to beat you!”
Sophia’s jaw dropped. “Umm…Vi…maybe this isn’t the best time for a bluff…”
Violet drew her next card, and her LP went down. (Pot of Greed)
Violet – 2200 Ryo - 8000
“I activate Graceful Charity! This lets me draw three cards (Gem Defense, Monster Reborn, and Shining Angel) at the cost of two (Marie the Fallen One and Polymerization) I set one card facedown (Gem Defense) and summon Shining Angel to the field in ATK mode! (1400 ATK) I then end my turn.”
Ryo laughed as he drew his card. (Infernal Fusion) “I won’t bother attacking, so I’ll just do this: Infernal Fusion! At the cost of my Red Eyes Darkness Dragon, I can fuse my three Red Eyes, even though 2 of them are in my deck, to summon this: RED EYES BLACK HYDRA!”
Ryo’s side of the field turned into one big lava pool. The Darkness Dragon disappeared in a flash of flame. Suddenly, a great, three-headed beast rose out of the lava, roaring loudly.
Ryo grinned evilly. “And thanks to Infernal Fusion, my Hydra’s ATK becomes 5000!”
“No way!” Violet called.
“Well, that’s a wrap folks” Chazz remarked. “Now we wait for Violet to go down in flames.”
WHAM!
“Ouch…” Chazz murmured, rubbing the back of his head as Sophia lowered her fist.
Meanwhile, Violet was just drawing her card. (Emergency Provisions) “I activate Pot of Greed! This lets me draw two cards. (Hyper Fairy Fusion and Dragonstorm) I now activate Dragonstorm! At the cost of 1000 LP, I can choose one Dragon in my deck and summon it to the field, so rise Blue Eyes White Dragon!”
Ryo laughed. “Don’t forget Angelic Intervention Violet. Now you don’t have any LP to spare”
“Violet grinned. “But I also gain 200 thanks to Marie”
Violet – 400 Ryo – 8000
“But that’s where my draw card comes in” Violet replied. “I activate Emergency Provisions! By sacrificing my Angelic Intervention, I gain 1000 LP!”
Violet – 1400 Ryo – 8000
“And with that, I end my turn” Violet finished.
Ryo grinned evilly. “And now its my turn. Draw!” He looked at his draw card (Infernal Gunfire) “”I now activate Infernal Gunfire! This card allows me to deal 1000 damage to your LP if I have a monster with Red Eyes in their name in play!”
Violet – 400 Ryo – 8000
“And now, Red Eyes Black Hydra, destroy Blue Eyes White Dragon and end this duel!”
“Hold on!” Violet called out. “I activate Gem Defense! This Trap Card allows me to take one Gem Beast monster in my deck and bring it to the field in DEF mode, and your attack is redirected to my Gem Beast monster. Now rise, Gem Beast Sapphire Pegasus!”
The hydra unleashed a torrent of fire from all three heads. As it sped towards the dragon, Sapphire Pegasus appeared in front of the Blue Eyes and took the damage and was blown into a million pixels.
Ryo shrugged. “Eh, doesn’t matter. I’ll beat you next turn”
“And by then it’ll be too late!” Violet called out as she drew her card. (The Forgiving Maiden) “And thanks to Marie, I gain 200 LP!”
Violet – 600 Ryo – 8000
“And for starters, I’ll summon The Forgiving Maiden in Def mode! (2000 DEF)” Violet announced. “I then activate Monster Reborn to bring back Sapphire Pegasus in ATK mode! (1800 ATK) I now activate Solar Flare! This card deals you 600 damage for every Light monster on my side of the field, and I have 5!”
Violet – 600 Ryo – 5000
“I now activate Hyper Fairy Fusion! I sacrifice my Shining Angel and remove Marie the Fallen One and The Forgiving Maiden from play to summon St. Joan! (2800 ATK) And thanks to Hyper Fairy Fusion, I can sacrifice Light-types to increase St. Joan’s attack, so if I sacrifice all my monsters, St, Joan will gain 6200 ATK! (9000 ATK)”
Ryo stumbled back in shock, but then recovered and laughed. “You won’t beat me this turn Violet! St. Joan isn’t strong enough!”
Violet slowly smiled, and that scared Ryo more than anything. “Oh, did I mention that I have two cards in my deck that can be summoned by removing cards from my graveyard? I now remove Blue Eyes White Dragon and my two Shining Angels from play to summon Cyber Angel Durama and Mars the Fairy Flame Lord! Both in attack mode! (Durama: 3000 ATK, Mars: 2800) Durama can only be summoned by removing a monster in my grave from play and it gains the ATK of the removed monster. Mars can only be summoned by removing 2 Fairy-types from the game and it gains the combined attack of the removed monsters. So now I have enough to take you out! ST. JOAN, ATTACK RED EYES BLACK HYDRA WITH HOLY BLADE STRIKE!”
St. Joan darted forward and swung her blade, decapitating the hydra.
Violet – 600 Ryo – 1000
“CYBER ANGEL DURAMA AND MARS THE FAIRY FLAME LORD, ATTACK RYO DIRECTLY AND FINISH HIM OFF!”
Violet – 600 Ryo – 0
Violet walked towards the crumpled form of Ryo, whose body was turning to smoke.
“The shadows…calling me…” Ryo managed to say. He smiled weakly. “Defeat Anubis…do it for…” But then, he disappeared.
The rest of Violet’s friends walked up behind her. “I wonder what he want to say?” Rose mused.
“Probably an invitation to a dance” Chazz murmured, making sure he was out of Sophia’s hearing range.
Violet looked behind her. “I’m going in…alone”
Sophia was already shaking her head. “Forget it, I’m coming too.”
“Me three!” Rose called.
Violet ground her teeth in frustration. “Alright. Sophia, you can come. But the rest STAY HERE!” she yelled as Johan and Rose opened their mouths in protest.
Alexis nodded. “We’ll be waiting right here”
“Good” Violet said. And with Sophia next to her, she walked through the gates and into the darkness of the Academy.
