Yu-Gi-Oh! Battle of the Heavens Episode 56: “Guardian of the Tombs, Part 2”
Greg surveyed the field with a feeling of impending doom. He, Violet, and Sophia were dueling Anubis for the fate of the world (We seem to do that a lot, don’t we? Greg mused). Even though they had the lead, Anubis had just summoned Theinen the Great Sphinx and although Team Evolution had 6 monsters out, something was telling Greg that Anubis wasn’t going to let them win this easily. It was Violet’s turn, so she drew her card. (Negate Attack) “I set my draw card facedown and end my turn.” Anubis cackled as he drew his card. (Egyptian Runes) “I activate my draw card: Egyptian Runes! When deciphered, this spell card lets my Sphinx attack equal to the number of monsters you have on your side of the field. And by paying 500 LP…”

“Theinen gains 3000 ATK points! (6500 ATK) Now Theinen, why out Greg’s monsters!” Greg watched sadly as the sphinx raised his arms and unleashed a white lightning bolt at his monsters. It collided head on and the monsters were obscured by a wave of smoke. When it cleared, only Phoenix Enforcer was left standing. “How?!” Anubis exclaimed. “Theinen should’ve have destroyed your Phoenix Enforcer!” Greg grinned. “Didn’t I mention that Phoenix Enforcer cannot be destroyed in battle? No? Oh, well now you know.” Anubis shrugged. “Fine by me. Theinen, destroy Sophia’s monsters!” Theinen unleashed his white lightning again, and the Shadow Realm took its toll upon Team Evolution.
Anubis – 5500 Team Evolution – 1000
Anubis cackled evilly. “Theinen, destroy Team Evolution!” Theinen raised its arms for the final time… “I activate Scapegoat!” Violet called out unexpectedly. Four colorful sheep appeared on the field. Anubis shrugged. “No matter. Theinen, destroy Violet’s funny farm animals!” Theinen unleashed four bolts of lightning straight at the sheep, destroying them instantly. “Violet grinned. “Thanks for that, because I can now summon my favorite monster: Tyuratin! (2800 ATK) Thanks to his ability, I can choose a creature type and destroy each monster that matches that type! Furthermore, you can’t summon any monsters of that type. So Tyuratin, destroy Theinen!” Tyuratin rose into the air and raised her arms. A blinding light blinded the duelists for a few seconds. When the light vanished, the Sphinx was gone. “YES!” Sophia crowed, punching the air. “BRILLIANT JOB VI!” Greg yelled, blowing his girlfriend a kiss. Violet smiled and gave her partners a thumbs up. Anubis growled. “You believe that you’ve destroyed my most powerful monster? I have creatures in my deck with more power than you can imagine!” Greg rolled his eyes. “If I could get a card every time a person has said that to me, I’d own every card ever created.” With that sarcastic remark, he drew his card. (Reckless Greed) Suddenly, his Phoenix Enforcer—and his city—blew up. “WHAT THE HECK HAPPENED?” Greg yelled. Anubis smirked. “My Sands of Time. It’s been four turns, so your cards bite the dust.” “Fine” Greg snarled. “I activate Reckless Greed! This lets me draw two cards at the cost of my next draw phase (Hero Recruiting Efforts and Hero Training). I now activate Hero Recruiting Efforts! This Spell Card allows me to select one monster from my deck with ‘Hero’ in its name and Special Summon it to the field so I introduce you to the three Hero Kids!” “Wait! How come you get to summon three?” Anubis exclaimed. “Your Spell only lets you summon one!” Greg gave a small smirk. “Hero Kid allows me to recruit his brothers when he’s Special Summoned. But that’s not all! I now activate Hero Training! I can only activate this card when I have 1 or more Hero Kids in play. I can sacrifice my Kids in order to make them grow up! So I sacrifice my three monsters to summon Elemental Heroes Ocean, Forest, and Stratos! (Forest: 800 ATK, Ocean: 1500 ATK, Stratos: 1800 ATK) And thanks to Stratos, I can summon another Hero to the field so rise Elemental Hero Sparkman! (1600 ATK) And thanks to my Forest I can add a Polymerization to my hand. I now activate it to fuse Elemental Heroes Forest and Ocean together to summon Elemental Hero Earth! (2500 ATK) And by sacrificing my monsters, I can increase my Hero’s ATK by the ATK of the monsters I sacrifice so by sending Sparkman and Stratos to the graveyard, I can give Earth a 3400 ATK boost! (5900 ATK) I now end my turn” Sophia and Violet looked at Greg in amazement. “Why aren’t you attacking? We can end this right now!” “I don’t know” Greg furrowed his brow, thinking hard. “Something just told me not to” Sophia drew her next card. (Graceful Charity) “I activate Graceful Charity! This lets me draw three cards (Fulgurant Dragon, Monster Reborn, and Dark Blaze Dragon) and discard two (Fulgurant Dragon and Dark Blaze Dragon). I now activate Monster Reborn! Rise Fulgurant Dragon! (2800 ATK) And since it was Special Summoned from the grave, I can select any monster in my graveyard and increase my monster’s ATK by the number of levels the selected monster has times 200, so I’ll select Blue Eyes White Dragon, increasing Fulgurant Dragon’s ATK by 1600! (4400 ATK) FULGURANT DRAGON, ATTACK ANUBIS WITH DIVINE DRAGON BLAST!”
Anubis – 1100 Team Evolution – 1000
Violet drew her next card. She looked at it, a little confused. Why was the card blank? Suddenly, the card slowly began to take shape. Violet gasped at the Spell it had became. “I ACTIVATE JUDGMENT DAY!” she cried, holding the card aloft. The field slowly changed from the Shadow Realm to a place above the clouds. Violet continued, “Now several things happen: Firstly, Anubis and I discard our hands and each draw five cards. (Violet: Warrior of Zera, Archlord Zerato, Mudora, Ray of Hope, Hyper Fairy Fusion. Anubis: Shadow Contract, Archfiend Soldier x2, Mad Dog of Darkness, Temptation) Secondly, We both sacrifice our monsters in play and then summon one monster from our decks Special Summon them to the field, and I choose Guardian Angel Joan! (2800 ATK)” Violet glared at Anubis. “What’s yours?” He shrugged. “Can’t summon him…” “Oh good” “Until I play this: Shadow Contract! This Spell allows me to select one monster in my deck and add it to my hand…with my soul as a price” Greg stared in amazement. “That’s pretty much committing suicide!” Anubis slowly smiled. “Not really, not when I play this: I send all the monsters in my graveyard back to my deck so I can summon this: ULTIMATE FORBBIDEN GOD EXODIOS!” The ground (or clouds…or whatever…) under them shook. Suddenly, the ground in front of Anubis opened and a hand emerged…then an arm…then another arm…until a huge beast who looked like Exodia had emerged. “I now activate Temptation! At the cost of discarding my entire hand, I get to select one monster in play and force it to attack my monster!” “Sorry!” Violet called out. “Judgment Day negates all normal battle phases. But my card can allow the two monsters we selected to do battle. The winner of the battle will win the game.” Anubis laughed. “Fine! Exodios, Obliteration Blast!” Exodios raised its arms and cupped its hands together. A swirling mass of golden light was forming. When the energy reached its peak, Exodios sent it flying towards Joan. “Joan, counterattack! Holy Light Attack!” Violet ordered. Joan raised her right arm and unleashed a ray of light. It met the incoming attack head on and began pushing it back towards Exodios. Violet grinned, believing that she was winning, until the meeting point of the two attacks reached the middle of the field. Suddenly, the attack began to turn back towards Joan! Anubis cackled. “Did I mention that Exodios’ ATK is equal to the number of monsters in my graveyard times 1000? That’s 3000 ATK, higher than your Fairy!” The meeting point drew steadily closer to Joan, who was looking on in fear… NO! Greg thought. “ELEMENTAL HERO EARTH, ATTACK THE MEETING POINT WITH EARTH SHATTERING STRIKE ATTACK!” Greg’s Hero raised his arms and slammed his fists into the ground. Shards of earth flew out of the ground (clouds, whatever) and hit the meeting point of Joan and Exodios’ attacks head on, turning it into a ball of golden light surrounded by shards of earth. Sophia caught on to Greg’s plan quickly. “FULGURANT DRAGON, ATTACK THE MEETING POINT WITH DIVINE DRAGON BLAST!” Sophia’s dragon opened it giant maw and unleashed at torrent of gold fire, turning the meeting point into a giant gold fireball. Slowly, the combined forces of the three monsters forced the meeting point back towards Exodios. But all feelings of elation were quickly dispelled at the middle of the field. The fireball just stopped and refused to budge. Suddenly, the ball was surrounded by purple shadows. Now what? Greg wondered. Greg looked at Anubis and almost fainted in shock: Surrounding the mega villain was Shadow Energy and he was feeding it to Exodios! “Yes…more power!” Anubis growled. Greg blinked. Okay…freaky much… But Greg soon realized that he had bigger problems to worry about: The Shadow Realm had given Exodios the power he needed to force the meeting point back towards Team Evolution. Great, now what are we going to do? Greg panicked, watching his doom come closer. We’ve got no power left and no way to stop that attack from going through! Let me take over…a new voice sounded in his mind. One that sounded slightly familiar… I hope it does. I helped you seal Marik away for all eternity, remember? Greg took a double take. Atem?! What in the name of Ra are you doing here? Helping out. Listen, I’d love chat but I’ve got an obliterating death coming at me right now. Leave a message and I’ll get back to you. Ah yes, about Exodios... Yes? That’s why I’ve come. Let me take over. Come again? Sacrifice your souls to me so I can come back and beat Anubis. I promise everything will be alright. SAY WHAT?!?! Greg… THERE AIN’T NO WAY ON THIS PLANET I’M GOING THROUGH WITH THAT! Greg, listen to me… IF YOU THINK THAT THIS IS THE BEST PLAN, LET ME TELL YOU— WILL YOU SHUT UP?!?! Atem roared. Greg shut his thoughts real fast. Sorry. Thank you. Anyways, my plan is the only way to defeat Anubis. You three have done your part. Let me take over. Greg sighed. What do we have to do? Take off your gauntlets AT THE SAME TIME. They are tying your souls to your bodies. Then I’ll absorb them and come back to a limited life and take Anubis down. Alright. Thanks Atem. See you on the other side. With that, Atem’s presence left his mind. Greg turned to his friends. “I’ve got a plan!” “What is it?” Violet asked. “Sacrifice our souls” “SAY WHAT?!” Sophia screamed. “THERE AIN’T NO WAY—” “Atem said it was the only way!” Greg said, with a note of pleading in his voice. The two girls were silent for a bit and then Sophia asked “What do we have to do?” “Remove our gauntlets at the same time” Greg replied quickly. Sophia nodded. Greg turned to Violet. “You ready?” She bit her lip, and then nodded. Greg took a breath. “Okay. On three. One…” Team Evolution put a hand on their gauntlets. “Two…” The meeting point was mere inches away now… “THREE!” Greg hollered and, as one, the three tore off their gauntlets. The effect was instantaneous. Greg started to feel weak and his vision darkened. He was dimly aware that the attack had stopped and that he was surrounded by Shadow Energy. Taking a last deep breath, Greg blacked out. Meanwhile, Anubis watched as Team Evolution feel backwards, the white balls of lights that represented their souls floating into the sky. “I have won!” he crowed to the sky. “The world is MINE!” “It’s not over yet” a voice said. Anubis stared as the three souls joined together and unleashed a bright light, blinding him. When his sight returned, he pinched himself, thinking that he was dreaming. Standing in front of the soulless bodies of Team Evolution, wearing his favorite outfit and an activated duel disk, was the Pharaoh Atem.
