Episode 53: “Mask of Darkness”
“Okay, where are we?” Sophia asked.
Violet looked around. They were inside Duelist Academy…and they were lost. “Well, we just left a classroom, meaning we’re probably in a hallway.”
“Yeah, but where’s Jaden’s office?” Sophia asked. “If Anubis is anywhere, he has to be there!”
An evil chuckle resonated throughout the hallway, making the girls shiver. “He’s there alright, but you won’t get to see him”
Sophia whirled around to face the speaker. He had white hair, dark eyes, and were wearing Egyptian robes. It took awhile to place him, but then it hit her. “Hang on…you’re Bakura! The one that Yugi defeated during Battle City!”
Bakura growled. “Correct Pharaoh, but this time, I won’t lose!”
Violet looked back and forth between Sophia and Bakura. “Uh, did I miss something?”
Sophia’s eyes never left Bakura’s. “Violet, get to Jaden’s office. I’ll take care of him.”
As Violet ran off, Sophia activated her duel disk and inserted her deck. “Why have you come back this time?”
Bakura laughed. “Easy” he said as he activated his disk. “To take over the world! As with this” he flashed a card, “you’ll be the first to bow to me”
“Fat chance”
“Oh yes, one more thing” Bakura said. “Let’s raise the stakes, shall we? If you win, you’ll get Greg back. However, if you lose, I get your God cards!”
“Fine by me”
“DUEL!” Bakura and Sophia yelled.
Sophia – 8000 Bakura – 8000
They two of them drew five cards. Sophia had Future Fusion, Dragon’s Mirror, Luster Dragon, Negate Attack, and Pot of Greed. Bakura had The Headless Knight, Destiny Board, Ryu Kokki, Negate Attack, and Pot of Greed.
“Ladies first!” Sophia announced, and she drew a card. (Dragonstorm) “I activate Future Fusion! I send three Blue Eyes White Dragons from my deck to the graveyard so I can summon my Ultimate Dragon in two turns. I then activate Dragonstorm! By paying 1000 LP, I can summon any Dragon-type monster in my deck, so rise Tyrant Dragon! (2900 ATK) I then set one card facedown (Negate Attack) and end my turn.”
Sophia – 7000 Bakura - 8000
Bakura drew his card. (Spirit Reaper) “I summon my Spirit Reaper in DEF mode. (200 DEF) I then activate one of my favorite trap cards: Destiny Board!”
Sophia groaned. “Aw man, I hate that card…”
Bakura smirked. “Then you know what it does. In five turns, you will lose!
And with that Spirit Reaper in DEF mode, Sophia realized, I won’t be able to deal him any damage! But I still gotta try!
“My move!” Sophia yelled and she drew her next card. (Mountain) “I activate my Pot of Greed! This lets me draw two cards. (Stamping Destruction and Change of Heart) Perfect!”
“What do you mean?” asked Bakura.
Sophia grinned. “I have the cards to leave you wide open! Firstly, I activate me Stamping Destruction, which destroys your Destiny Board and deals you 500 damage!”
Sophia – 7000 Bakura – 7500
“Next, I activate Change of Heart to destroy your Spirit Reaper! Then I summon Luster Dragon in ATK mode! (1900 ATK) NOW MY MONSTERS, ATTACK BAKURA DIRECTLY!”
Sophia – 7000 Bakura – 2700
Bakura drew his next card. (Monster Reborn) “I activate Monster Reborn to bring back Spirit Reaper. I then sacrifice it to summon Ryu Kokki! (2400 ATK) Attack Luster Dragon with Skull Bash Attack!”
Sophia – 6500 Bakura – 2700
“I then set one card facedown (Negate Attack) and end my turn.” Bakura finished.
Sophia drew her next card. (Pot of Avarice) “Since It has been two turns, Future Fusion kicks in. So now let me introduce you to Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon! (4500 ATK) Ultimate Dragon, attack Ryu Kokki with Neutron Blast! Tyrant Dragon, attack him directly and end this duel!”
Bakura grinned. “Not this time Pharaoh! I activate Negate Attack, meaning your battle phase ends!”
Sophia gritted her teeth. “Fine. Your move”
Bakura drew his next card. (Graceful Charity) “I activate Graceful Charity! This lets me draw three cards (Dark Necrofear, Giant Germ, and Cost Down) and discard two (Giant Germ and Headless Knight). I then activate Pot of Greed to draw two more cards. (Giant Germ and Generation Shift) I then activate Generation Shift. By sending one Giant Germ from my hand to the graveyard, I can take another from my deck to my hand. I now remove from play my three fiends to summon Dark Necrofear in DEF mode. (2800 DEF) I also switch Ryo Kokki to DEF mode (2000 DEF) and end my turn.”
Sophia drew her next card. (Graceful Charity) “I activate Graceful Charity! This lets me draw three cards (Raging White Dragon, Dragonstorm, and Sacrificial Remedies) and discard two (Raging White Dragon and Dragonstorm). I now activate Sacrificial Remedies! I sacrifice my Tyrant Dragon to gain LP equal to its ATK!”
Sophia – 9400 Bakura – 2700
Sophia continued, “I now activate Pot of Avarice. I shuffle the five monsters in my graveyard into my deck and I get to draw two cards. (Dragonstorm and Winged Dragon of Ra) Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon, attack Dark Necrofear with Neutron Blast!”
Sophia wasn’t really paying attention to the attack. She was to busy staring at Ra. How did it get into my deck? I didn’t put it there…did I?
Bakura smiled evilly. “Thank you for destroying my Necrofear, because when you do I take control of the monster that destroyed it!”
Sophia snapped back to reality. “What?!”
Sure enough, her dragon was on Bakura’s side of the field, growling menacingly. “Oh boy…”
Bakura drew his next card. (Vampire Lord) “I switch my Ryo Kokki to ATK mode and my two monsters attack you directly!”
Sophia – 2500 Bakura – 2700
Sophia drew her next card. (Mystical Space Typhoon) “I activate Mystical Space Typhoon so I can destroy my Future Fusion! This will destroy Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon as well!”
But if he draws a monster this turn…Sophia thought, I’m toast!
Bakura drew his next card. (Book of Life) Oh well, I can’t get everything. “I set my draw card facedown. Ryo Kokki, attack her directly with Skull Bask Attack!”
Sophia – 100 Bakura – 2700
Sophia drew her next card. (Reversal Quiz) Hey, it’s that card that Bastion gave me awhile back after he used a combo against me. It was the main part of the combo and he told me to use it only when you believe. I believe in my deck and in the Heart of the Cards, so why not use it? I’ve got noting to lose…except Greg’s soul, that is. Heart of the Cards, be with me…”I send all the cards in my hand and field to the graveyard to activate Reversal Quiz! I have guess whether its a Trap, Spell, or Monster. If I guess right, we exchange LP totals. I choose…Spell!”
Sophia shut her eyes and drew her card. She looked at it…and grinned. Flashing it to Bakura, she said, “Thanks for the LP! It’s the spell card Eye of the Dragon!”
Sophia – 2700 Bakura – 100
“Its your move” Sophia said. Please don’t get a monster, please don’t get a monster…
Bakura drew his next card. (Double Spell) “I set my draw card facedown. Ryu Kokki, attack her directly again!”
Sophia – 300 Bakura – 100
Sophia drew her next card. (Card of Sanctity) “I activate Card of Sanctity! We each draw cards until we both have six cards in our hands. So I get 6 cards and you get 1 (Sophia: Double Spell, Emergency Provisions, Luster Dragon, Polymerization, Negate Attack, Ring of Destruction. Bakura: book of Spells). I then set two cards facedown and then follow it up with Emergency Provisions! I sacrifice my two facedowns to gains 2000 LP!”
Sophia – 2300 Bakura – 100
“I now activate Double Spell! By discarding my Polymerization, I can bring back my Dragonstorm. I now activate the Dragonstorm. By paying 2000 LP I can summon my three Blue Eyes White Dragons! But they won’t be here for long because I sacrifice all three of them to summon the Egyptian God, THE WINGED DRAGON OF RA! And since each dragon had 3000 ATK, my God has 9000 ATK points! Now bring it!”
Sophia – 300 Bakura – 100
“You want me to bring it? It is brought!” Bakura called out as he drew his card. (Mirage of Nightmare) “I activate Book of Spells to take 3 Continuous Spells from my deck and put them facedown on the field. I now activate Mirage of Nightmare. I switch my Ryo Kokki to DEF mode and end my turn”
Sophia drew her card and Bakura did as well. “Wait, why are you drawing cards?” she asked.
“My Mirage of Nightmare allows me to draw cards equal to the number of facedowns I control, so that’s five cards! (Hamon, Blinding Light, Zombie Rush, Emergency Provisions, and Ring of Destruction) I now activate Emergency Provisions to sacrifice my Mirage and two facedowns to gain 3000 LP! (Sophia draw card: Kaibaman)”
Sophia – 300 Bakura – 3100
“No matter” Sophia said. “Winged Dragon of Ra, destroy Ryu Kokki with Solar Flame!”
Bakura drew his next card. (Sacred Power) “I sacrifice my three facedowns to summon this beast: HAMON, LORD OF STRIKING THUNDER! (4000 ATK) I now activate Sacred Power to increase Hamon’s attack by 4000! (8000 ATK) I now activate Zombie Rush, which allows me to summon monsters from my grave if I pay 1000 for each monster, so rise Ryu Kokki, Dark Necrofear, and Spirit Reaper! That concludes my turn.”
Sophia – 300 Bakura – 100
Sophia drew her next card. (Wrath of Ra) “I activate the final card of this duel, Bakura: WRATH OF RA! Every monster on the field that is weaker than my monster is crushed, leaving your LP wide open!”
“NO!” screamed Bakura. “I CAN’T LOSE!”
“YOU JUST DID BAKURA! WINGED DRAGON OF RA, ATTACK BAKURA DIRECTLY AND END THIS!”
The mighty dragon raised its head and stared at the shivering form of Bakura for a moment. Then it opened its mouth and unleashed a torrent of fire at him, incinerating him in seconds.
Sophia – 300 Bakura – 0
As the light receded, Sophia noticed a crumpled form where Bakura had been moments ago. Walking slowly, she found herself standing in front of the unconscious form of her cousin.
As she knelt beside Greg, he began to cough weakly. He opened his eyes slowly and tried to rise, but Sophia put a hand on his shoulder. “Easy” she advised. “Rest for a moment.”
Greg shook his head and opened his eyes again. “Sophia…is that you?”
Sophia nodded and embraced her cousin. After a few moments, she held him at arm’s length and examined him closely. “You’re all cured…but your eyes…their different…”
Greg quickly looked around. In a reflection he saw his faced. All the cuts and scrapes we gone. Then he noticed his eyes: they were amazing. They were three different colors at once: purple, orange, and green, the same colors as his gauntlet.
“Wow…” breathed Greg. “Thanks Critias.”
Sophia helped him to his feet. “We gotta hurry. Violet’s going to take on Anubis alone!”
Greg looked at Sophia with a determined look in his eyes. “No she’s not…because we’re dueling with her!”
