Yu-Gi-Oh! Battle of Heavens Episode 1: “Entrance Exam, Part 1”
The bright lights were blinding. Greg tried to squint through the brightness. He couldn’t believe that he was actually preparing for the duel that could possibly make him the best duelist the world has every seen, well at least since Yugi. His examiner was Sophia. Strangely enough, Sophia was actually his cousin who was in the Critias Purple dorm. Another strange thing was that she wasn’t wearing purple! In fact, she was strictly causal: a pair of jeans, a blue and red striped t-shirt, and sneakers. Greg looked down at his clothing. His were perfect dueling clothes: black sweats, black T-shirt, red tennis shoes, and a red, white, and dark blue sweater that could actually pass as a jacket. Good thing Jaden Yuki is in charge, Greg thought. Or I might be wearing purple after this duel! Greg looked down at his right arm. His duel disk was in place and so was his deck. His deck was pretty strange. It was what he called an Elemental Hero Lock Deck. Even the secretary of Jaden Yuki thought that Elemental Heroes were useless! Hadn’t anyone learned anything when Jaden was a student here? He had shown the power of the E-Heroes, and still nobody believed that those decks were worth anything! Greg knew the Heroes were weak as well, so he added his own back of tricks. Sophia’s piercing gaze bore into him. “Ready applicant?” she called. Greg grinned. “I’ve been ready since I first stepped into this building! And to prove it, I’ll beat you!” “All right! DUEL!”
Greg – 8000 Sophia – 8000
Greg drew five cards and looked at them. Not exactly the best of hands: Alpha the Magnet Warrior, a monster with stats of 1400/1700, Black Luster Ritual, 2 Axe of Despair, and The A. Forces. Greg grimaced. He only had one monster out of five cards. At least he went second… Sophia, on the other hand, had an excellent hand. She had 2 Divine Dragon Ragnarok, 1 Lord of D., 1 Blue Eyes, and 1 Ring of Destruction. She had all the pieces necessary to summon King Dragun! “All right, stand back Greg!” Sophia called. “I draw a card (Dragon’s Mirror) I summon Divine Dragon Ragnarok in ATK mode. (1500/1000) Greg drew one card. It was his Elemental Hero Avian. Now I am getting somewhere, Greg thought. “All right. I Summon Alpha the Magnet Warrior in DEF mode (1400/1700). It’s your turn” Sophia drew a card. It was her Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV6! I’ll guess Lord Dragun will have to wait a minute, she thought. “I sacrifice my monster. Then I’ll summon Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV6! (2400/1600) I attack your Magnet warrior. Go!”
Greg – 8000 Sophia – 8000
Greg drew his next card. It was his Mask of Restrict! Greg was slightly disappointed. He had been hoping for a Miracle Fusion or Burstinatrix. Oh well, thought Greg. I guess we can’t have everything. But what am I going to do? My Avian has only 1000 ATK power. That can’t beat her Horus. I have two Axe of Despairs, but I need at least one…of…them. Greg smiled. It seemed so simple. Axe will give Avian +1000, giving it 2000 ATK and the…Greg just realized that he was stuck. He would need to discard something. “I discard E-Hero Avian in order to draw one card” When Greg looked at it, he gasped. It was his Mask of the Accursed! Everything was in place to do a steady burn! “I’ll equip my Mask of the Accursed to you Dragon. I’ll then play Mask Restrict! Now nobody can Tribute anything for any reason! And since Mask of the Accursed makes you lose 500 LP during each of your Stand-by phases. I have now caught you in a Lock!” Everyone in the stadium gasped. So it was true! Greg had created an Elemental Hero Lock Deck! His heroes did not require Tributes and Most of Sophia’s monsters relied on tributes! Sophia was a little shocked too as she drew her card, which was a Blue Eyes White Dragon. She then surveyed her hand. She then noticed her Lord of D. It said that all of her dragons could not be the target of Spells of Abilities! “I summon Lord of D. in DEF Mode! This card frees my Dragon from your mask! Horus, attack his Life Points directly!
Greg – 6600 Sophia – 7500
Greg frowned slightly. He had not expected that move. He was still frowning when he drew his E-Hero Sparkman. Then He had an idea! “I play Elemental Hero Sparkman in ATK Mode (1600/1500). Sparkman attacks your Lord of D., therefore recreating the Lock!”
Greg – 6600 Sophia – 7100
Sophia drew her next card, which turned out to be her Monster Reborn. It then hit her. Her Lord Dragun pieces were in her graveyard and she had a Dragon’s Mirror in her hand! “I play Dragon’s Mirror! I remove Divine Dragon Ragnarok and Lord of D. from the game to summon LORD DRAGUN! (2300/1100) Now my Dragon, attack E-Hero Sparkman with Dragon Fire!”
Greg – 5900 Sophia – 6600
Greg drew his next card: It was his Elemental Hero Bubbleman! “I discard Elemental Hero Bubbleman to draw one more card” When he looked down, he silently shouted in elation: It was his Miracle Fusion! “I play the Spell card known as Miracle Fusion. I remove Avian, Sparkman, and Bubbleman to play ELEMENTAL HERO TEMPEST! (2800/2800) ATTACK HER KING DRAGUN WITH THUNDERBUBBLE TORNADO!”
Greg – 5900 Sophia – 6100
Sophia was starting to get worried. She had no monsters and Greg could easily beat her. That’s when she looked at the card she drew and she smiled. “I play Monster Reborn to revive my Lord Dragun. I send it back to my hand (or in this case Fusion Deck) in order to play A Wingbeat of Giant Dragon. Say good-bye to your lock! (Note: the 500 damage of Accursed happened BEFORE she destroyed it)
Greg – 5900 Sophia – 5600
“I also play Ring of Destruction, which destroys your Tempest and deals 2800 damage to both our life points!”
Greg – 3100 Sophia – 2800
Sophia wasn’t over yet though. “My monster attacks you directly. End turn!”
Greg – 700 Sophia – 2800
Greg was now starting to get nervous. He needed something useful, and quick! He looked at the card he drew and it was his Elemental Hero Clayman. Greg was growing desperate. He needed something now! “I discard E-Hero Clayman to draw one more card.” The next card was his Elemental Hero Burstinatrix. ‘I discard my E-Hero Burstinatrix to draw a card.” Greg looked at his deck. If he didn’t get his last Miracle Fusion Spell Card on this draw, he lost!
Can Greg turn this duel around and win? Or will he lose his chance to enter the Academy?
To be continued…
