Violet stood at the edge of the cliff late at night. In her hand were her Sky Devil Lord cards. She was looking at them, wondering…
Should I keep these cards? She thought. These cards represent how far I’ve gone from my path. But they came to me in a time of need. They must be good for something…
As Violet was about to put the three cards back into her deck, a voice behind her said, “In order to find your way back, you have to give yourself up to the light within.”
Violet whirled around, but nobody was there. “Weird…”

The next day, Violet walked to Rose’s tent. The other girl had wanted Violet to meet her duel apprentice, saying that he was one of the best Ra had to offer.
I hope he’s as good as Rose says she is, Violet thought.
After a few minutes, Rose stepped out and greeted her. “He’s at the Duel Clearing.” Rose said, referring to the clearing where Greg and Sophia had dueled their apprentices.
After another minute, they reached their “arena”. Waiting there was a dark-skinned boy in a yellow vest, his duel disk activated and his deck in its slot.
“Violet” he said softly as his tutor approached. “It’s time to find your path.”
Violet stopped short. “Wait a minute” she said as she activated her disk and put her deck in. “You were the guy who spoke to me last night!”
“Maybe, maybe not” the boy replied.
“What’s your name, anyway?”
“Mars, and I obviously know yours”
“Time to test you”
“Let’s Duel!”
Violet – 8000 Mars – 8000
The two duelists drew five cards. Mars had Blaze Cannon, Volcanic Bullet, Fire Wall, Monster Reborn, and Graceful Charity. Violet had Sky Devil Lord Invisil, Ultimate Offering, Allure Queen LV3, Shining Angel, Negate Attack.
“Apprentice’s first” Violet said. Mars nodded and drew his card. (Volcanic Buckshot) “I activate Graceful Charity! This lets me draw 3 cards (Volcanic Hammer, Volcanic Edge, and Volcanic Devil) and discard 2 (Volcanic Hammer and Volcanic Edge). I then set 2 cards facedown (Blaze Cannon and Fire Wall) and end my turn.”
Violet drew her next card. (Widespread Ruin) “I summon Allure Queen LV3! I then activate Ultimate Offering! This lets me pay 500 LP to summon another monster. I sacrifice my Allure Queen to summon Sky Devil Lord Invisil! (2200 ATK) Now attack him directly!”
Violet – 8000 Mars – 5800
Mars drew his next card. (Volcanic Charge) “I activate my Blaze Cannon! By discarding my Volcanic Bullet, I can destroy one monster on your side of the field so your Sky Devil Lord is destroyed! And by paying 500 LP I can add another Bullet to my hand! I now activate Monster Reborn to bring back Volcanic Hammer! (2400 ATK) Now attack, Volcanic Hammer Shot! And thanks to its ability, I can now deal 400 damage to your LP!”
Violet – 5200 Mars – 5300
Violet drew her next card grimly. (Sanctuary in the Sky) “I activate Sanctuary in the Sky! Now I take no damage when you destroy a Fairy-type monster! Now I summon my Shining Angel in DEF mode! I also set 1 card facedown (Negate Attack) and end my turn.
Mars drew his next card. (Volcanic Edge) “I summon Volcanic Edge in DEF mode! (1200 DEF) I also switch my Hammer to DEF mode. (1500 DEF) And since I know your Angel’s ability, I’ll just discard my Volcanic Bullet to destroy it and you won’t get a monster! I’ll then pay 500 LP to bring another Bullet to my hand. Finally, I’ll activate my Hammer and Edge’s special abilities. Edge deals you 500 damage while Hammer deals you 600!”
Violet – 4100 Mars – 4800
Violet drew her next card. (Graceful Charity) I activate Graceful Charity! This lets me draw 3 cards (Sky Devil Lord Enrise, Sky Devil Lord Norreras, and Pot of Greed) and discard two. (Enrise and Norreras) I then activate Pot of Greed! This lets me draw two more cards (Shining Angel and Cestus of Dagla). Now I summon Shining Angel in ATK mode! (1400 ATK) and I equip it with Cestus of Dagla, increasing its ATK to 1900 and giving me life equal to the battle damage I deal. Shining Angel, attack Volcanic Hammer!”
Mars drew his next card. (Blaze Trident Cannon) “I sacrifice my Blaze Cannon to activate my Blaze Trident Cannon! This card allows me to discard one Pyro monster in my hand to destroy a monster on your side of the field and then deal 500 damage to your LP! So I discard my Bullet to get rid of that Angel and to deal you 500 damage! Now my Volcanic Edge does 500 damage to you due to his ability!”
Violet – 3100 Mars – 4800
Violet drew her next card. (Monster Reborn) “I activate Monster Reborn! Come back Shining Angel! Now attack and destroy Volcanic Edge!”
Mars drew his next card. (Volcanic Revolver) “I summon Volcanic Revolver in ATK mode! (1200 ATK)”
Violet drew her next card. (Warrior of Zera) “I summon Warrior of Zera in ATK Mode! (1600 ATK) Shining Angel, attack his Revolver! Warrior of Zera, attack him directly!”
“You’ve triggered two different effects!” Mars crowed. “First my Revolver allows me to search out a Volcanic monster (Edge) and put it on the top of my deck! Next, you triggered Fire Wall! By removing my Volcanic Bullet from play, I can negate your Warrior’s attack!”
Violet – 3100 Mars – 4600
Mars drew his next card. (Volcanic Edge) “Alright, time to win this! First I summon Volcanic Edge in ATK mode! (1800 ATK) Next, I sacrifice my Blaze Trident Cannon to summon my ultimate monster: VOLCANIC DEVIL! (3000 ATK) Thanks to its ability, I can make weaker monsters go kamikaze during your Battle Phase and, even better, whenever it destroys a monster, all of your monsters are destroyed and your take 500 damage for each of them! Now my monsters attack!”
“I activate my Negate Attack!” Violet called out. “Your attacks are negated and your turn in over!”
Violet drew her next card. (Manju of the Ten Thousand Hands) “I summon Manju of the Ten Thousand Hands in DEF mode! (1000 DEF) Thanks to his ability, I can add my Shinato’s Ark to my hand. I switch Zera and Shining Angel into DEF and end my turn.”
Mars drew his next card. (Mirror Force) “I set one card facedown and end my turn”
Violet drew her next card. (Ring of Destruction) “I set one card facedown and end my turn”
Mars drew his next card. (Volcanic Hammer) “I sacrifice my Edge to summon Volcanic Hammer to the field! My turn ends.”
Violet drew her next card. (Solar Ray) “I activate Solar Ray! You take 1800 damage!”
Violet – 3100 Mars – 2800
Mars drew his next card. (Negate Attack) “My Hammer deals you 1200 damage to its ability and I end my turn.”
Violet – 1900 Mars – 2800
Violet drew her next card and smiled. “It’s over Mars! I activate Shinato’s Ark! I sacrifice my three monsters to summon Shinato, King of the Higher Plain! (3300 ATK) Now my monster, attack Volcanic Devil!”
“I activate my facedown trap: Mirror Force! Your monster is destroyed!”
“Oh no you don’t! I activate my Trap Card Ring of Destruction! Shinato is destroyed and we both take damage equal to his attack points!”
Right when Shinato was about to crash into the mirror barrier, he started to glow. A second before impact, he exploded, showering both duelists with his holographic pieces.
Violet – 0 Mars – 0
“It’s a draw?!” Rose exclaimed.
Mars and Violet struggled to their feet. “You’re good” Violet panted.
Mars grinned. “You’re not bad yourself”
“Thanks for helping me find my path”
“I didn’t help you. You helped yourself.”
Violet thought over Mars’ words as he left. I don’t think he’s right on that one. I didn’t choose to discard those Sky Devil Lords. Fate did for me.
She took out her Dark-attribute cards and held them over her head. I’m done with the dark. It’s time to follow the light. And with that, she ripped her Dark cards in half, threw them away, and walked to her tent.
In the shadows, two figures smiled. “Thanks Mars” one said.
“No problem Greg” the other said.
Greg, leader of Team Evolution, turned to the boy by his side. “You’re a pretty good duelist, you know.”
“I know” Mars replied.
“How about we duel sometime?”
“Do you think Violet will allow it?”
Greg turned and looked at where Violet disappeared and smiled. “Yes, for some reason, I do…”
