Yu-Gi-Oh! Battle of the Heavens Episode 43: “Death’s Door”
The jet streaked over the blue ocean on its way to Duelist Academy. Greg of Team Evolution stared out the window not really paying attention to anything. Next to him was his cousin Sophia, who was fiddling with her deck. Two rows back was Violet. Heaven knows what she might be doing. Greg sighed. Normally they would take a plane with only three seats so that Sophia and Violet could be on either side of him. But ever since their big fight in Domino City a month ago, Violet refused to be with him for more than five minutes. So he just…sat alone most of the time. The rift between Greg and Violet had caused a rift in Team Evolution as well. Greg and Violet’s arguing caused the others to argue. It got so out of hand that Greg had sent each member on the Team on vacation until further notice. In short, Don’t come back if you can’t keep your temper. Greg announced that he’d be going back to Duelist Academy to visit Jaden, who had went back there soon after Battle City. Sophia insisted that she came along and she somehow convinced Violet to come along as well. “We are making our final approach to Duelist Academy. Please stay fastened until-Oh my…” the pilot broke off with a strangled gulp. Greg and Sophia glanced at each other and dashed to the cockpit. “What’s the matter pilot?” Greg asked when they entered. The pilot gestured wordlessly out the window. The cousins followed his gaze and gasped: Duelist Academy was obscured by shadows. The shadows were slowly drifting outwards in all directions. Flames were dimly seen below on the ground. Sophia turned to Greg. He had gone pale, his mouth moving but no words coming out. “What do we do?” Greg shook himself out of his trance and said “Grab your things and open the hatch. We’ll parachute our way in.”
* * *
As few minutes later, Greg, Violet, and Sophia were outside the gates of their school. It had taken them awhile to get untangled from their chute lines and to find their duel disks and decks. Then they dashed pell-mell to the school. “HELLO?!?!” Greg hollered. “OPEN UP!!!” Minutes went by and nothing happened. Violet sneered. “Maybe you should yell louder. That way the whole island will hear.” Greg round on his former girlfriend, a snappy retort at the ready, when the gates creaked open and three figures strode out. All of them were wearing black. A cloth covered their whole face except their eyes. They all wore duel disks. “Which one of you is Greg?” the tall one rasped. The leader of Team Evolution stepped forward. “I am” Greg said. “We want to enter and speak to your leader. Not his cronies.” “Respect, Master Greg” the short one said. “We are more powerful than all of you together.” “You can stick you advice—” Greg’s ranting was cut off by a punch in the gut by the first speaker. “Respect please” Greg recovered quickly and stiffly nodded his head in apology. “If you want to enter the building, you have to beat the three of us in a duel…alone.” “Wait, you mean 3 on 1?” Greg asked. “Correct” Greg smiled. “If someone had made this offer to me a few years ago, I would’ve accepted this challenge without a second thought. “But” Greg said, shooting a glance at Violet. “Circumstances have changed me. 3 on 1 is hardly fair. Unless…” Greg activated his duel disk and stepped back between Sophia and Violet, who also activated their disks. “It was 3 on 3.” Sophia looked at him and smiled. “You know I love a challenge” Violet nodded at Sophia. “You said it” “First up will be myself, Gilford, against Greg” said the main speaking dark man. He flung off his cloak to reveal his true form: long black hair, gray eyes, and a crest on his chest that had the figure of a sword on it. “Fine by me” Greg retorted and slapped his deck in its slot. “And to make this game more interesting, we’ll up the stakes” Gilford snapped his fingers and in a puff of black a girl appeared. She was bound and gagged and she looked…familiar. Greg gasped. “Rose!” Gilford smiled. “If you win, I’ll set her free. If you lose, her soul will wander the depths of the Shadow Realm” Greg snarled. “Deal” “Well then, Let’s Duel!”
Greg – 8000 Gilford – 8000
The two duelists drew five cards. Greg had Avian, Stratos, Polymerization, Hero Barrier, and Hero’s Bond. Gilford had Blindly Loyal Goblin, Marauding Captain, A. Forces, Negate Attack, and Reinforcement of the Army. “Guests first” Gilford said. “Thank you” Greg replied scathingly and he drew his card (Burstinatrix). “I summon Elemental Hero Burstinatrix in ATK mode! (1200 ATK) I then activate Hero’s Bond! Since I have an Elemental Hero in play, I can special summon my Elemental Heroes Avian and Stratos to the field! (Avian: 1000, Stratos: 1800) I then activate Polymerization! I fuse Avian and Burstinatrix together to summon Elemental Hero Flame Wingman! (2100 ATK)” Gilford drew his next card. (Freed the Matchless General) “I summon my Marauding Captain to the field in ATK mode! (1200 ATK) Thanks to its ability, I can Special Summon my Blindly Loyal Goblin in ATK mode (1800 ATK). I then activate my A. Forces! This card gives all my Warriors an extra 200 points for every Warrior on my side of the field, meaning that all of them get 400 more ATK points! (Captain: 1600, Goblin: 2200) Blindly Loyal Goblin, attack Elemental Hero Stratos now!” Greg – 7600 Gilford – 8000
Greg drew his next card (Swords of Revealing Light) “I activate Swords of Revealing Light! You can’t attack for three turns.” (Turn 1) Gilford drew his next card (Gilford the Lightning). “I sacrifice my Marauding Captain to summon Freed the Matchless General in ATK mode! (2700 ATK)” Greg drew his next card (Elemental Hero Forest). “I summon Elemental Hero Forest in DEF mode (2000 DEF) and end my turn.” (Turn 2) “Since I have Freed on the field, I can choose 1 level 4 or lower Warrior in my deck and bring it to my hand instead of drawing a card (The Six Samurai-Nisashi). I then summon The Six Samurai-Nisashi in ATK mode! (2000 ATK, Freed: 2900 ATK, Blindly Loyal Goblin – 2400 ATK)” Gilford said. Greg drew his next card. (Pot of Greed) “Thanks to Elemental Hero Forest, I can add one Polymerization to my hand. I then activate Pot of Greed and draw 2 more cards (Sparkman and Clayman). Its now time to activate Polymerization and fuse my Sparkman and Clayman together to summon Elemental Hero Thunder Giant! (2400 ATK) And thanks to its ability, I can discard my last card in my hand to destroy one card on your side of the field so that means your General has met his match! (Goblin- 2200, Nasashi – 1800) But the best part is, I can still attack! Thunder Giant, attack Nasashi!” (Goblin – 2000) (Turn 3)
Greg – 7600 Gilford – 7600
Gilford drew his next card (Graceful Charity). “I play Graceful Charity! I can now draw 3 cards (The Six Samurai-Zanji, Monster Reborn, and The Six Samurai-Yariza) and discard 2 cards (Negate Attack and Reinforcement of the Army). I then activate Monster Reborn, so come on back Nasashi! (1800 ATK, Goblin – 2200 ATK) I then summon The Six Samurai-Yariza in ATK mode (1600 ATK, Nasashi – 2000 ATK, Goblin – 2400)! And since I have another Samurai out, Yariza can attack you directly! Yariza, attack Shadow Spear Strike!”
Greg – 6000 Gilford – 7600
Greg drew his next card (Mirror Force). “I set my draw card face down. Thunder Giant, attack Yariza now!” “I activate Yariza’s special ability!” Gilford crowed. “Since I have another Six Samurai in play, I can destroy my Nasashi instead of my Yariza!” (Yariza – 1400 ATK, Goblin – 2000 ATK)
Greg – 6000 Gilford – 7200
Gilford then drew his card. (Pot of Greed) “I activate Pot of Greed! This gives me two more cards (Negate Attack and Return of the Sic Samurai) I then activate Return of the Six Samurai! This allows me to bring back Nasashi! But there is a slight drawback of it dying at the end of turn, but it’s no problem. I sacrifice all three of my monsters to summon Gilford the Lightning! (3000 ATK) And thanks to its ability, all your monsters are destroyed! GILFORD, ATTACK GREG DIRECTLY WITH LIGHTNING SLASH ATTACK!!”
Greg – 3000 Gilford – 7200
“I then place one card facedown and end my turn” Gilford finished. Greg got up slowly. Okay, this is not good. One more hit and I’m done for…but he doesn’t know about my Mirror Force! Greg then drew his possibly final card (Graceful Charity). “I activate Graceful Charity! This lets me draw 3 cards (Mystical Space Typhoon, Bubbleman, Sparkman) and discard 2 (Bubbleman and Clayman). I then set one card facedown (MST) and end my turn” “You’re giving up so easily? I expected a better challenge” Gilford sneered as he drew his card. (Gearfried the Iron Knight) “I summon Gearfried the Iron Knight in ATK mode (1800 ATK)! NOW MY MONSTERS, ATTACK GREG DIRECTLY AND END THIS DUEL!” “I activate my two facedowns: Mirror Force and Mystical Space Typhoon! All your monsters are destroyed as well as you’re A. Forces!” Greg drew his next card (Pot of Avarice). “I activate Pot of Avarice! With it, I can shuffle 5 monster cards from my graveyard into my deck (Avian, Burstinatrix, Stratos, Bubbleman, Clayman) and I get to draw two cards! (Reckless Greed 2x) I now activate 2 Reckless Greeds to draw 4 cards (Righteous Justice, Miracle Fusion, Reckless Greed, Destruction of Destiny) at the cost of my next two draw phases. I then activate another Reckless Greed to draw two more cards at the cost of a draw phase. (United We Stand and Scapegoat) I then activate Destruction of Destiny! I have to discard the top three cards of my library and I lose 1000 LP for ever Spell and Trap card I discard in this way. (Avian, Burstinatrix, and Sparkman) and all of them were monsters, my LP are safe! I then activate Miracle Fusion! I remove Flame Wingman and Sparkman from play to summon my Elemental Hero Shining Flare Wingman! (2500 ATK) I then activate Scapegoat to give me 4 tokens. I then follow that up with United We Stand, which increases my Wingman’s ATK and DEF by 4000 points! (6500/6100)” “But Greg, you still don’t have enough power to defeat me! Face it, you’ve lost!” Greg smirked. “I know about your facedown. So I’ll just play Righteous Justice, which destroys one Spell and Trap card for every Elemental Hero on my side of the field. So that means your last line of defense is gone.” “NO!” Gilford yelled as his Negate Attack exploded. “Oh yes! I almost forgot! Did you know that Shining Flare Wingman gets an extra 300 ATK points for every Elemental Hero in my graveyard, and I count 4. So that’s an extra 1200 points, which makes my Hero a 7700 ATK monster! SHINING FLARE WINGMAN, ATTACK GILFORD’S LP WITH THUNDERFORCE STRIKE!”
Greg – 3000 Gilford – 0
“As per our agreement, Rose is freed” Gilford waved a hand and the bindings holding the captive girl were released. Rose immediately ran towards Greg and hugged him. Nobody noticed Violet’s eyes becoming fiery. Sophia stepped forward. “Now it’s my turn!” The smallest man stepped forward and activated his disk. “My name’s Ryo. If you lose, that boy will lose his soul!” Ryo pointed behind him. Sophia looked as well and saw a Slifer tied up. “Michael” She murmured. “Let’s duel!” Ryo announced and the two duelists drew their opening hand.
Sophia – 8000 Ryo – 8000
Sophia looked at her hand. It must’ve been the worst one in Duel Monsters history: Dragon’s Mirror, Pot of Greed, Dragon Gunfire, Mountain, and Negate Attack. Ryo was slowly smiling. He had Graceful Charity, Red Eyes B. Chick, Red Eyes Black Dragon, and 2 Inferno Fire Blasts! “I’ll go first!” Ryo announced and he drew his card (Red Eyes Darkness Dragon). “I first activate Graceful Charity! This allows me to draw 3 cards (2 Luster Dragon and Inferno Blitz) and discard two (the Luster Dragons). I then summon my Red Eyes B. Chick. I sacrifice it to Special Summon my Red Eyes Black Dragon! (2400 ATK) I then activate Inferno Fire Blast! Since I have a Red Eyes on the field, I can deal damage to your LP equal to its ATK! I then activate another Inferno Fire Blast, dealing you 2400 damage. But now Red Eyes can’t attack so I sacrifice it to summon Red Eyes Darkness Dragon! (2400 ATK) My monster gains 300 ATK points for every Dragon in my graveyard and I count 4! (3600 ATK) I then activate the Spell Card known as Inferno Blitz! This card forces all monsters with “Red Eyes” in their names to ATK even if they’ve just been summoned! RED EYES DARKNESS DRAGON, ATTACK HER LP DIRECTLY AND END THIS DUEL!”
Sophia – 0 Ryo – 8000
“WHAT?!?!?!” Greg, Sophia, and Violet yelled together. At the same time, the Slifer boy slumped forward as his soul departed him. Violet ran forward to the last Shadow Rider. “Let’s Duel!” she shouted. “Fine by me!” the man sneered. “My name’s Mahado, Master of the Magicians! And if you lose, this little lady is going to the Shadow Realm!” Mahado lifted his cloak to reveal… “CHRISTY!!” Greg cried. Greg’s sister was tied up and gagged like the people before but her head was held high. She had a look in her eyes that said I’m not scared. Don’t worry about me. Violet’s eyes narrowed. “Only a coward would kidnap someone else’s sister! Let’s Duel!”
Violet – 8000 Mahado – 8000
The two duelists drew five cards. Violet had Deck Devastation Virus of Magic, Deck Devastation Virus of Death, Deck Devastation Virus of Darkness, Shining Angel, and Axe Dragonite. Mahado had Apprentice Magician, Dark Magician Girl, Ultimate Offering, Double Spell, and Snatch Steal. Violet went first. Violet drew her first card. (Demon King Diablos) “I summon Shining Angel in DEF mode (800 DEF) and end my turn.” Mahado drew his card. (Thousand Knives) “I summon my Apprentice Magician to the field. I then activate Ultimate Offering! By paying 500 LP I can summon another monster, so by sacrificing the apprentice I can summon the master! I summon Dark Magician Girl in ATK mode! (2000 ATK) Attack Shining Angel with Dark Burning Attack!” “Thanks for that because I can now Special Summon another Shining Angel to the field in ATK mode! (1500 ATK)” Violet said as she drew her next card. (Trojan Bomb) “I set one card facedown (draw card) and end my turn.” Mahado drew his next card. (Sage’s Stone) “I activate Sage’ Stone! Since I have a Dark Magician Girl on my side of the field, I can Special Summon a Dark Magician from my deck! (2500 ATK) I then activate Thousand Knives, which allows me to destroy one monster on your side of the field so goodbye Angel!” “Don’t forget its ability Mahado! I can summon another Angel from my deck!” “But it’s in ATK mode, so you LP are going down! Dark Magician Girl, attack Shining Angel with Dark Burning Attack! Dark Magician, attack Violet directly with Dark Magic Attack!”
Violet – 5000 Mahado – 8000
Violet drew her next card. (Pot of Greed) “I activate Pot of Greed! This allows me to draw 2 cards from my deck! (Ultimate Offering and Allure Queen LV3) I summon Axe Dragonite in ATK mode! I then activate Ultimate Offering and pay 500 LP to summon my Allure Queen LV3 to the field. By paying 500 LP and sacrificing both my monsters, I summon my Demon King Diablos in ATK mode! (2800 ATK) And thanks to its ability, all the cards you draw to the bottom of the deck! DEMON KING DIABLOS, ATTACK DARK MAGICIAN GIRL WITH SHADOW GUST ATTACK!”
Violet – 4000 Mahado – 7200
Mahado smirked. “I don’t need to draw cards, because this duel’s already over! I activate Snatch Steal! This allows me to take control of Diablos!” “Oh no it doesn’t! I activate Trojan Blast! You see, since you’re trying to snatch my monster, I can sacrifice it to deal damage to your LP equal to Diablos’ attack!”
Violet- 4000 Mahado – 4400
Mahado grinned. “But now you’re wide open! Dark Magician, attack Violet directly!”
Violet – 1500 Mahado – 4400
Violet drew her next card. (Graceful Charity) “I activate Graceful Charity! This lets me draw three cards (Monster Reborn, Sky Devil Lord Enrise, and Sanctuary in the Sky) and discard two (Sanctuary and Monster Reborn). I then remove my three Shining Angels and my Allure Queen from play to summon Sky Devil Lord Enrise! And once per turn, he can remove one of your monsters from play, so goodbye Dark Magician. But he can’t attack this turn so I’ll place three cards facedown (The Deck Devastation cards) and end my turn” Mahado drew his next card (Pot of Greed). “I activate Pot of Greed! This lets me draw two cards (Monster Reborn and Inferno Tempest). I then activate Monster Reborn to bring back Dark Magician Girl in DEF mode. (1700 DEF) I then set one card (Inferno Tempest) face down and end my turn.” Violet drew her next card. (Reckless Greed) “I activate Reckless Greed! This lets me draw two cards (Sky Devil Lord Norreras and Reckless Greed) at the cost of my next draw phase. I then activate another Reckless Greed and draw two more cards. (Sky Devil Lord Invisil and Sanctuary in the Sky) I then activate Sanctuary in the Sky, meaning that I take no battle damage when you destroy a Fairy. I then remove 3 Dark and 1 Light monsters in my graveyard from the game to summon Sky Devil Lord Norreras in ATK mode! (2400 ATK) I then sacrifice my Enrise to summon my Sky Devil Lord Invisil! (2200 ATK) And since I sacrificed a Dark-type monster, all your Traps are negated! SKY DEVIL LORD NORRERAS, ATTACK DARK MAGICIAN GIRL! SKY DEVIL LORD INVISIL, ATTACK MAHADO DIRECTLY!”
Violet – 1500 Mahado – 2200
“Awesome!” Sophia said. “Violet’s turning it around!” Greg’s eyes narrowed. What happened to you Violet? Where did you find the darkness to wield those cards? Mahado drew his next card. (Dark Magic Curtain) “I activate Dark Magic Curtain! By paying half my LP I can summon an old friend. Dark Magician, rise! Now, attack Sky Devil Lord Invisil with Dark Magic Attack!”
Violet – 1500 Mahado – 1100
Violet smiled. “Your attack means nothing! You just wasted 1100 LP!” Mahado smirked. “No I did not. I just gave myself a wall.” “Then let me crumble it for ya!” Violet retorted. “Three turns from now, that is…” Mahado chuckled and drew his next card (Knight’s Title). “I activate the card known as Knight’s Title! By sacrificing my Dark Magician, I can create a new monster! Rise, Dark Magician Knight! (2500 ATK) And thanks to its ability, I can destroy one card on the field as soon as it comes into play and I choose your Field Spell! Now Dark Magician Knight, attack Sky Devil Lord Norreras now!”
Violet – 1400 Mahado – 1100 Violet bowed her head. “I’ve…lost…” “Yes you have” Mahado didn’t even bother to draw his next card. “DARK MAGICIAN KNIGHT, END THIS DUEL NOW!”
Violet – 0 Mahado – 1100
“NNOOOOOOOO!!!!!” Greg screamed as Violet crumpled to the ground and Christy lost her soul. Mahado was cackling evilly. “You lost 2 out of 3! So long and I hope we meet again!” The last thing Greg saw before he blacked out was Christy’s unmoving form facedown on the ground.
* * *
“Ugh” Greg grunted as he sat upright and rubbed his head. “Where am I?” Greg looked around to see a lot of trees and a sign points towards Duel Academy. He frowned. “How the…Oh gosh! Sophia, Violet! Are you guys okay?!” Sophia jerked upwards and held her ears. “Man, you got a nasty set of lungs there.” “Where’s Violet?” Greg asked frantically. Sophia pointed north. “I heard her running that way about 5 minutes ago.” Greg swore (Sophia flinched for Greg never swore), picked himself up, and darted after Violet. “VIOLET?!?!” Greg hollered. “WHERE ARE YOU?!?!” A few yards ahead, Violet was standing at the edge of a cliff looking at her Sky Devil Lord cards. Why couldn’t I win? She wondered as tears ran down her face. Even with added power I can’t beat villains. Maybe…maybe I should— Violet was dragged out of her thoughts by Greg skidding to a halt next to her. “Are…you…okay?” Greg panted. Violet turned away so he didn’t see the tears. Unfortunately, she couldn’t keep them out of her voice. “Ye-Yes” Greg walked up behind her and put a hand on her shoulder. “What’s wrong?” Violet turned to face him, her face twisted with grief and anger and confusion. “WHY ARE YOU TRYING TO COMFORT ME?! I JUST COST YOUR SISTER HER SOUL! YOU SHOULD BE MAD AT ME, NOT PITYING ME!” Greg looked into her eyes. “How can I be mad when the one I love is hurting so much?” With those words, the last restraints holding Violets grief in check were shattered. She fell to the ground sobbing. Greg crouched next to her and took her into his arms and rocked her, like she did to him so many years ago. “I’ve been hurting ever since we left Domino” Violet whispered. “Without you…I felt…lost.” “Shh…” Greg hushed. “We’re together again. We’ll be alright.” And I’m going to make those Shadow Riders PAY for what they’ve done. Greg, Violet, and Sophia (who had run into some old friends and was recounting what had happened) thought murderously.
End of Episode
