Yu-Gi-Oh! Battle of the Heavens

Episode 44 “The Gem Beasts”

“So…” Rose said. “What do we do now?”

After their defeat at the hands of the Shadow Riders, Greg, Violet, Sophia, and Rose had joined up with a bunch of refugee students deep in the woods on Academy Island. They were now contemplating their next move.

“Go back and challenge them again?” Greg suggested.

“What, and cost two more people their souls?” Sophia snapped. She was a little sore at the fact that Greg was the only person to beat a Shadow Rider while she had been defeated even before her turn started.

“Wait, I have an idea!” Rose announced. “How about we take dueling apprentices?”

“You mean like training other duelists?” Violet asked.

“Yeah! We’ll train the ones hear at camp. There are an Obelisk, a Slifer, and 2 Ras. Violet, you’ll have the Ra Yellows, Sophia will have the Slifer, and Greg, you’ll get the Obelisk.”

“SAY WHAT?!?!” Greg’s cry of indignation shook the canopies of the trees.

“No way, I’m not teaching those Obelisk Snobs!” Greg shouted.

“Come on Greg, we need all the help we can get!” Rose pleaded.

“Not in a million years!”

Violet slinked over to her boyfriend. “Greg…” she pouted. “Please? For me?”

Sophia stood up and started to slam her head into a tree. “Please. God. Kill. Me. Now.”

Greg groaned. “All right. Who’s the lucky duelist?”

Rose clapped her hands once and a boy in a blue blazer and blue hair walked towards them.

Greg’s mouth dropped open. “Johan Anderson?!”

A few minutes later, Greg and Johan were standing in the clearing with their duel disks on their wrists. They were just going through the last second posturing.

“Jem Beasts, eh?” Greg remarked as he shuffled his deck. “Weren’t those monsters given to you by Pegasus?”

“Yeah, and they almost beat Jaden Yuki” Johan remarked as he put its deck in its slot.

“So I guess we’ll see which is better: Your gifts or my luck. Let’s Duel!”

Greg – 8000                 Johan – 8000

The two duelists drew five cards. Greg’s opening hand was Avian, Burstinatrix, Hero’s Bond, Bubbleman, and Hero Barrier. Johan had Gem Beast Emerald Turtle, Gem Beast Topaz Tiger, Card of Sanctity, Rainbow Ruin, and Negate Attack. Johan went first.

Johan drew his first card. (Gem Beast Ruby Carbuncle) “I activate Rainbow Ruin! This gives me special abilities when certain requirements are met. I then summon Gem Beast Emerald Turtle in DEF mode (2000 DEF), set one card face down (Negate Attack), and end my turn.”

Greg drew his next card. (Pot of Greed) “Go Pot of Greed! This allows me to draw two more cards from my deck (Sparkman and Polymerization). I then summon Elemental Hero Avian in ATK mode! But he won’t be alone for long because I activate Hero’s Bond! This allows me to Special Summon two more Heroes to the field so come out Burstinatrix and Sparkman! I then activate Polymerization! I fuse Avian and Burstinatrix together to form Elemental Hero Flame Wingman! But he won’t be here long, because I play a second Polymerization! I fuse Sparkman and Flame Wingman together to create Elemental Hero Shining Flare Wingman! (2500 ATK) And thanks to his ability, he gains 300 points for every hero in my graveyard (3700 ATK). Now my monster, attack Emerald Turtle now! And thanks to his ability, you take damage equal to Emerald Turtle’s attack points!”

Greg – 8000                 Johan – 7200

To everyone’s surprise, an emerald stone appeared in Johan’s Spell/Trap zone. “What the heck?” Greg said.

“My Gem Beasts have a special ability.” Johan explained. “When they are destroyed, they are sent to my Spell/Trap zone instead of my Graveyard.” He then drew his card. (Gem Beast Amethyst Cat) “I summon Gem Beast Amethyst Cat in ATK mode! (1200 ATK) And if I decrease its ATK by half, it can attack you directly! Amethyst Cat, attack Greg with Amethyst Claw!”

Greg – 7400                 Johan – 7200

Greg drew his next card (Clayman). “I summon Elemental Hero Clayman in DEF mode! (2000 DEF) Shining Flare Wingman, attack Amethyst Cat!”

Greg – 7400                 Johan – 3500

Johan drew his next card. (Pot of Greed) “I activate Pot of Greed! This lets me draw two more cards (Prayer of Gem and Guidance of Gem). I then activate Guidance of Gem! Since I have two Gem Beasts in my Spell/Trap Zone, I can special summon another Gem Beast to the field so I summon Gem Beast Sapphire Pegasus! (1800 ATK) And thanks to its ability, I can choose a Gem Beast and put it into my Spell/Trap zone and I’ll choose Ruby Carbuncle! Since I can still summon a monster, I’ll summon my Topaz Tiger in ATK mode, put one card face down (Prayer of Gem) and end my turn”

Greg drew his next card. (Mirror Force) “I set one card facedown. Shining Flare Wingman, attack Sapphire Pegasus and finish him off!”

“Hold on!” Johan yelled. “I activate my facedown Trap Card: Prayer of Gem! Now by sacrificing my Ruby Carbuncle, I can destroy your monster!”

“What?!” Greg cried out as his Shining Flare Wingman exploded.

Johan drew his next card. (Mystical Space Typhoon) “I activate my Spell Card of Sanctity! This lets us draw cards until we have six cards in our hand! (Greg: Sparkman, Bubbleman, Avian, Polymerization, Scapegoat. Johan: Gem Beast Amber Mammoth, Monster Reborn, Last Resort, Scapegoat, Enemy Controller) I then activate Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy your facedown. Now I activate Monster Reborn to bring back Ruby Carbuncle! (300 ATK) And thanks to its ability, I can bring out all of the Gem Beasts in my Spell/Trap Zone so its time to welcome Amethyst Cat and Emerald Turtle (Turtle has 800 ATK). Now my monsters, attack Greg directly! (1200 + 1800 + 2000 + 800 + 300= 6100)”

Greg – 1300                 Johan – 3500

Greg drew his next card. (United We Stand) When he looked at it, he smiled. “This duel is over!” he announced.

“How?!” Johan asked incredulously.

“I activate Polymerization! I fuse Sparkman, Bubbleman, and Avian together to summon my signature monster: Elemental Hero Tempest! (2800 ATK) I then activate my Scapegoat to summon 4 Sheep Tokens to my side of the field!”

“I know where this is going” Violet said.

Sophia groaned. “How can you not?! He’s done this move in almost every single duel he’s been in!”

Meanwhile, Greg was finishing up the duel. “I activate the final card of this duel: United We Stand! By equipping it to Tempest, my Hero gains and extra 800 ATK for every monster on my side of the field!”

“But that means…” Johan began.

“THAT IT GAINS 4000 ATK! ELEMENTAL HERO TEMPEST, ATTACK RUBY CARBUNCLE AND END THIS DUEL!”

Greg – 1300                 Johan – 0

As the holograms disappeared from the dueling field, Greg walked slowly to his duel apprentice, who was lying face up on his back. In the victor’s hand was a card.

Greg crouched down next to Johan and helped him sit up. “Man, you’re good”

Johan smiled. “I had a feeling I couldn’t beat the best duelist in the Academy.”

“That’s in the past now. I’m just the second best duelist around”

“If I could have just one more card, my deck would be perfect!”

“Would that card…” Greg started slowly. “Be this one?” Greg held the card in his hand up and Johan gasped. It was the legendary Rainbow Dragon.

“H-How did you find it? How did you…?” Johan was staring at the card in utter amazement.

Greg smiled and put the dragon in Johan’s deck. “I’ll take that as a thank you” With that, Greg got up and left Johan to drool over his luck.

“By the way” Greg stopped and turned to Johan. “I have to ask you something.”

Johan jumped to his feet. “Anything!”

A ghost of a smile graced Greg’s features. “Duel me again sometime”
