Episode 42: “Fake Hero, Part 2”
Greg stared at the evil Marik Ishtar from across the roof. They were in the ultimate duel with the ultimate stakes: If Greg won, Marik would vanish forever. However, if Marik won, Greg would be banished to the Shadow Realm!
Marik smiled evilly. “Now where was I? Oh, I remember…Dark Neos, attack Sparkman with Shadow Blast Attack!”
Greg fell to the ground with a groan as more energy was sapped out of him due to Sparkman’s defeat.
Greg – 1000 Marik – 5000
Greg shakily rose to his feet and drew his next card (Hero City) “I activate Hero City! Since it’s a Field Spell, your Neo Space is destroyed, lowering you Dark Neos’ ATK points! (Dark Neos-2500) It also allows me to Special Summon an Elemental Hero from my graveyard every turn, and this turn I choose to summon my Sparkman in DEF mode (1400 DEF) and end my turn.”
“Then so is your life!” Marik cackled. “My draw!” Marik looked at his new card. It was his Elemental Hero Neos. I’m so glad you come whenever I need you, Marik thought. “I summon an old friend of yours: Elemental Hero Neos! Dark Neos, attack Sparkman! Neos, attack Greg directly and finish his off!”
“I activate Hero Barrier! Since I have an Elemental Hero in play, I can choose one of your attacks and negate it. That means your Neos’ attack is stopped and my LP are safe! (Dark Neos returns to Fusion Deck)”
Greg drew his next card (Clayman). “Thanks to Hero City, I can Special Summon Sparkman in DEF mode! I then summon Elemental Hero Clayman in DEF mode (2000 DEF) and end my turn.”
Marik drew his next card (Avian). “I summon Elemental Hero Avian in ATK mode (1000 ATK)”
Greg drew his next card (Elemental Hero Stratos) “I summon my Elemental Hero Stratos in Def mode! (300 DEF) Thanks to its ability, I can choose one hero in my deck and bring him to my hand. (Burstinatrix) I now activate Polymerization! I fuse Clayman and Burstinatrix together to summon Elemental Hero Rampart Blaster in DEF mode! (2500 DEF) Thanks to my monster’s special ability, he can attack you directly while in DEF mode and the damage you take is equal to half of Rampart Blaster’s ATK points! Rampart Blaster! Show Marik your Rampart Barrage!”
Greg – 1000 Marik – 4000
Marik drew his next card (Neo Force). “I activate Neo Force! I equip it to my Neos to increase its attack by 800 and when it destroys a monster in battle, half the ATK of the destroyed monster is dealt to your LP! ELEMENTAL HERO NEOS, ATTACK SPARKMAN WITH SPACE CRUSH ATTACK!”
Greg – 200 Marik – 4000
Greg drew his next card (Poison of the Old Man). “Thanks to Hero City, Clayman can return to the field in DEF mode. I then activate Poison of the Old Man to increase my LP by 1000. Rampart Blaster, attack with Rampart Barrage!”
Greg – 1200 Marik – 3000
Marik drew his next card. (Neo Force) “Oh Greg, its your old friend: Neo Force!”
“What?!?! But it was shuffled into your deck!” Greg exclaimed.
“I know, but it came back. I equip it to my Neos and its now time to crush your Clayman! Neos, attack Clayman with Space Crush Attack! Neo Force then returns to my deck”
Greg – 800 Marik – 3000
Greg drew his next card. (Change of Hero-Reflector Ray) “I set one card facedown. Rampart Blaster, attack with Rampart Barrage!”
Greg – 800 Marik – 2000
Marik drew his next card (Neo Spacian Dark Panther) “I summon my Dark Panther to the field. I then activate its ability to make it a copy of Rampart Blaster. And when I say copy, that includes its special ability! Dark Panther use Rampart Barrage and end this duel!”
The image of Rampart Blaster raised his cannon arm and fired a salvo of missiles. They bypassed Greg’s defenses and sped towards there target.
Goodbye world, Greg thought. He stood straight, his head held high, hands clenched and a defiant gleam in his eye. The missiles closed the distance between them and nailed Greg in the stomach. The tremendous pain made Greg clutch is stomach and fall into a kneeling position. Then, after a few seconds, he slumped forward.
Greg – 0 Marik – 2000
“GREG!!!” Violet screamed.
“Oh no!” Rose and Sophia yelled, clutching each other.
“Oh yes!” Marik crowed. “The world is mine!’
And then a white light blinded everyone present. When it cleared, Team Evolution looked and saw a card floating above their fallen hero. Sophia recognized it immediately.
It was Legacy of Heart.
Suddenly, several ghostly figures floated down from the sky. They were Dartz, Atem, and Ishizu. Marik seemed scared.
“I defeated you once before, yet I knew you would return. You keep coming back no matter how many times you’ve been defeated. This time Marik, you won’t escape.” Atem said.
“Greg fought for justice, yet is it justice to take away his life at such an early age? We are here to remedy that” put in Dartz.
“Is this actually happening?” Joe whispered to Zane. “Please tell me I’m dreaming”
“Marik, this time you have met your match” Ishizu said softly.
“Never!” Marik growled.
“Marik, its time to go home” a new voice said.
Team Evolution whirled around. Standing (actually it was floating) behind them was the image of Greg. He was wearing his same old uniform and wearing a duel disk.
“You have plagued the world for too long Marik” Greg said. “It’s time for you to return to your banishment.”
The four ghosts moved in on Marik. There was another flash of light, a final despairing cry, and then Marik—and the ghosts—were gone.
Suddenly, Greg moaned and rolled onto his back. Team Evolution rushed by his side. Violet flung herself down next to her boyfriend. “Greg!! Are you alright?! Wake up, please wake up!”
Greg coughed and struggled onto his elbows. Sophia and Rose helped him sit up. “Ugh…what happened? I feel like I’ve been split in half and then glued back together again…” then his eyes flashed with worry. “Is Marik gone? Is Jaden okay? Are you guys okay?”
Violet hushed him. “We’re fine. Marik has been banished by the light”
Greg nodded, relieved. Then he slumped back and began to snore.
* * *
It was around midnight when Greg awoke to the sound of footsteps. He glanced to the door and saw Violet sneaking up the stairs to the roof. Trying not to make a sound, he climbed out of bed, grabbed his duel disk, and climbed to the rooftop.
When he arrived, he found Violet staring at the moon with her back to him. He silently walked next to her and put his arm around her, whispering “You should be asleep”
Violet, who was used to these greetings, muttered “I needed to think. How are you feeling?”
“Fine” Greg turned her around and made his girlfriend face him. He searched her eyes. There was something new in them. A sense of hard resolve…”Are you okay?”
Violet shrugged his hands off her shoulders. “I’m fine” She then turned and began walking towards the stairs.
“I know your upset Violet” Greg called after her. “Tell me what’s wrong”
Violet whirled around and faced him. Greg nearly stumbled back in shock. Now there was blazing anger in her eyes. “I’m tired of being protected! Whenever another evil rears its ugly head, you step in front of it, stubbornly refusing anyone to help you! In the end, you always get hurt one way or another! This time, you almost died. If it wasn’t for the spirit of Atem, you would’ve died. Then what would’ve happened?”
“Hey!” Greg protested. “I don’t always do this alone! Sophia helped me find the Atlantean Dragons! And you—”
“Of course!” Violet yelled. “Sophia helps you all the time and what happens to me? I’m shunted to the side out of protection! I can take of myself Greg”
“I never said—”
“From now on, stop trying to shoulder the burden of protecting the world on your own! That’s why you made Team Evolution isn’t it? To protect the world? And another thing, stop trying to protect me!”
“You think I asked for this burden?!” Greg yelled. Tears were forming in his eyes now. “Do you think I asked for my father to mark me with the family symbol?! NO!! I didn’t ask for this job! I was destined for it! Why do I protect you? Because I love you! Yes, I made Team Evolution to help me fight evil, but some evils are too dangerous for you guys to help me with. Believe me, I wish that the team could stand by me every time I faced a villain, but it doesn’t work that way!”
The two of them stood staring at each other for a few minutes, breathing heavily. Then Violet reached into her pocket and took out a card. She flung it at him, saying “Take this back. Don’t even think about giving it back until you’ve learned the value of unity” With that, Violet turned and walked down the stairs.
With shaking hands, Greg looked at the card. It was the Unity card he shuffled into Violet’s deck during Battle City.
Greg sank to the ground, crying. I’ve lost everything, Greg thought. I lost Dartz, I’ve lost my home, and now I’ve lost Violet. Why do I keep on living? Why was I chosen for this task?
Greg lifted his head and screamed at the sky “WHAT HAVE I DONE TO DESERVE THIS TORTURE?!?! WHAT DIVINE BEING IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS?!?!” As he collapsed to the ground in tears, he distantly heard the Team bounding up the stairs, but he didn’t care. He just wanted to leave. To leave this world and never come back.
He had lost Violet. Now, he had nothing left.
