Episode 41: “Fake Hero, Part 1”
It was about 8 PM in Domino City and everyone was still awake. Everybody who had been watching the Battle City Finals were still fawning over the comeback made by Greg, leader of Team Evolution, against Violet, a member of Team Evolution and Greg’s girlfriend.
As for the victor and his friends, they were still partying. Atticus had taken upon himself the task of making a huge buffet dinner and they weren’t even halfway through the dinner. But the party was about to be cut short.
Jaden Yuki, Chancellor of Duelist Academy, stepped out onto the balcony overlooking the Sea of Japan. He was busy thinking of Greg, who used to go at the Academy until he convinced several other students to help him fight evil.
Jaden looked at the duel disk on his arm. It had been awhile since he last dueled. He was actually a little nervous about dueling Greg after seeing most of his duels. But I’m done with retirement, Jaden thought. I have to know how good Greg is.
As Jaden turned around to go back inside, he heard a rustling down below. As he peered over the edge, someone slugged him from behind and he knew no more.

Greg was leaning against a wall with his duel disk in one hand and a chocolate éclair in the other. Atticus had insisted that he try one and even Greg had to admit that the food was delicious. He was waiting for Jaden to come back, for the Chancellor had asked him wait.
All around him there was speculation on what Jaden was going to do.
“He’s going to duel Greg” Atticus insisted.
“Why would he do a stupid thing like that?” Zane asked. “Greg has just been crowned World Champion! And he was the King of Games by the age of 14! There’s no way Jaden would duel him because he knows he would lose!”
“But not if someone was helping him” a gravely voice said from the balcony.
Greg whirled around and saw Jaden standing in the room with a sneer on his face. Greg knew that voice. “Marik? What are you doing here?”
“Dueling you” Marik responded by activating his duel disk and putting a deck in. “with Mr. Yuki’s deck!”
“Fine” Greg snarled as he activated his disk and slammed his deck in. “If I win, your dark side is banished forever. If you win, I’ll forfeit my soul!”
“WHAT?!?!” Team Evolution exclaimed.
“Greg, you can’t…” Violet sounded close to tears.
“I accept” Marik said. “On one condition”
“What?”
“We duel in the Shadows!” Marik started to cackle evilly as he activated the Shadow Game!
Greg – 8000 Marik – 8000
Greg was a little nervous as he drew his opening hand (Elemental Hero Ocean, Elemental Hero Avian, Hero Signal, Future Fusion, and Scapegoat). He had researched Jaden’s deck thoroughly and it was pretty powerful. But I’ve defeated Marik twice before, once when he had the Egyptian God Cards and another time when he had the Forbidden Deck. This should be a piece of cake!
Marik smiled at his hand: Neo Spacian Air Hummingbird, Neo Space, Pot of Greed, Elemental Hero Neos, and Call of the Haunted. Soon, Greg will fall into the depths of the Shadow Realm, and then, the WORLD!!!
“Crazy villains go first” Greg said.
“Thank you” said Marik sarcastically, and he drew a card (Hero Signal). “I summon Neo Spacian Air Hummingbird in ATK mode! (800/600) And now I activate its special ability! I can gain 500 LP for every card in your hand, and you have 5 cards, giving me 2500 LP! I’ll set one card facedown (Hero Signal) and end my turn”
Greg – 8000 Marik – 10500
Greg drew his next card (Elemental Hero Burstinatrix) “I summon Elemental Hero Ocean in ATK mode! (1500 ATK) I then activate Future Fusion! I send Sparkman and Clayman from my deck to the graveyard in order to get Elemental Hero Thunder Giant two turns from now! I then set one card facedown (Hero Signal) and I’ll attack Air Hummingbird! Ocean, use your Tidal Surge Attack!”
“Thank you for destroying my monster! This allows me to activate Hero Signal! I can choose one Elemental Hero in my deck and summon it to the field so come on out Elemental Hero Sparkman!”
Greg – 8000 Marik – 9600
Marik drew his next card (Graceful Charity) “I activate Graceful Charity! I can draw three cards (Elemental Hero Necroshade, Wroughtweiler, and Solemn Judgment) if I discard two cards afterwards (Necroshade and Solemn Judgment). I now activate Call of the Haunted so I can bring back Neo Spacian Air Hummingbird! And don’t forget its Special Ability, so I now gain an extra 1500 LP!”
Greg – 8000 Marik – 11100
“But that’s not all!” Marik continued. “I now summon Elemental Hero Neos in ATK mode and initiate Contact Fusion! I send Neos and Air Hummingbird back to my deck to summon Elemental Hero Air Neos! (2500 ATK) Normally, this monster would return to my deck at the end of turn, so I activate the Field Spell Neo Space! Now all my Neo monsters get an extra 500 ATK points and my Fusions don’t return to the deck at the end of turn! (Air Neos: 3000 ATK) Air Neos, attack Elemental Hero Ocean with Feather Cascade! Sparkman, attack him directly with Static Shockwave!”
“I activate my Trap Card: Hero Signal! I can now bring Elemental Hero Forest out of my deck and bring it to the field since you destroyed one of my monsters!”
Greg – 4900 Marik – 11100
Greg drew his next card. (Pot of Greed) “Since it’s my Main Phase, Elemental Hero Forest allows me to take a Polymerization from my deck and put it in my hand. I now activate Pot of Greed, which allows me to draw two more cards. (Miracle Fusion and Earth Gravity) I now activate Miracle Fusion! I remove Elemental Heroes Ocean and Forest from play in order to create my newest Hero: Elemental Hero Earth! (2500 ATK) Next, I summon Elemental Hero Avian in ATK mode. (1000 ATK) ELEMENTAL HERO EARTH, ATTACK AIR NEOS WIT GROUND SHATTERING STRIKE ATTACK!”
“You’re more foolish than I thought!” Marik crowed. “You’re attacking a monster that’s stronger than yours!”
Greg grinned. “Not if I activate Earth’s special ability! I sacrifice my Elemental Hero Avian to increase Elemental Hero Earth’s ATK points by 1000, giving it 3500 ATK points…permanently.”
Greg – 4900 Marik – 10600
“And then I’ll set one card face down (Earth Gravity) and end my turn” Greg finished.
Marik drew his next card (Elemental Hero Avian). “I activate Pot of Greed! This allows me to draw 2 more cards (Hero Kid and Waboku). I then summon Hero Kid and since I summoned him, I can bring out two more from my deck! I then set one card facedown.”
Greg smiled. “I now activate Earth Gravity! All your monsters have to attack my Elemental Hero Earth once and then your battle phase is over!”
“I activate Waboku! I take no damage from the forced suicide!”
Greg drew his next card (Miracle Fusion). “I activate Miracle Fusion! I remove Avian and Burstinatrix from play to summon Elemental Hero Phoenix Enforcer! (2100 ATK) NOW MY MONSTERS, ATTACK MARIK’S LP DIRECTLY!”
Greg – 4900 Marik – 5000
Marik drew his card. (Mirror Force) “I set one card facedown”
Greg drew his next card (Hero Barrier). “I set one card facedown. I then sacrifice Phoenix Enforcer to increase Earth’s ATK by 2100 points! (5600 ATK) ELEMENTAL HERO EARTH, ATTACK MARIK’S LP DIRECTLY AND FINISH THIS DUEL!”
“I activate Mirror Force! Your monster is destroyed!”
Marik drew his next card (Elemental Hero Neos). “I summon Elemental Hero Neos in ATK mode! (2500 ATK) I attack you directly!”
Greg – 2400 Marik – 5000
Greg fell to the ground, puzzled. How come I feel so weak? Greg wondered. Marik didn’t mention any side effects. But wait a sec, did this happen to Joey Wheeler when he dueled Marik? Yeah…
Greg got up slowly and drew his next card (Elemental Hero Sparkman). I have to be careful how I play, because if I lose, I’ll lose all of my life energies! “Alright! I summon Elemental Hero Sparkman in ATK mode!”
Marik drew his next card (Neo Spacian Black Panther) “I summon Neo Spacian Black Panther in ATK mode! Now, it’s time for some Contact Fusion! I send Neos and Black Panther back to my deck to summon Elemental Hero Dark Neos! (3000 ATK due to Neo Space)”
Marik grinned evilly at Greg, who stared back defiantly. “In a few more turns, you’ll be so drained that your body will be joining the corpses of the Underworld!”
