Episode 40: “The Love that Binds”
Rising up towards the sky in the middle of Domino City was a large steel tower called the Battle Tower. At the top, two duelists stood at opposite ends of an arena, one boy and one girl. On the sidelines stood their friends, family, and fans, which were waiting for the match to start.
A Kaiba Corp official stepped into the middle of the arena. “WELCOME TO THE BATTLE CITY FINALS! GREGORY HENRY WILL DUEL VIOLET JONES AND THE WINNER WILL RECEIVE THE BATTLE CITY CROWN!”
Greg and Violet stared at each other with determination and love in their eyes. “You ready?” Violet called out.
Greg smile and activated his duel disk. “Ready to win, actually”
Violet smiled back as she activated her duel disk as well and put her deck in. “You never did know when to give up”
Greg put his deck in. “I’ve never had to”
“Let’s Duel!” Violet said.
Greg – 8000 Violet – 8000
The two duelists drew their opening hands. Greg had Avian, Burstinatrix, Polymerization, Fake Hero, and Mirror Force. Violet had Warrior of Zera, Archlord Zerato, Sanctuary in the Sky, Polymerization, and Emergency Provisions. According to the rules, Greg went first.
Greg drew his next card (Elemental Hero Ocean) “I summon Elemental Hero Ocean in ATK mode! (1500 ATK) I’ll also set one card facedown (Mirror Force) and end my turn.”
Violet drew her next card. (Marie the Fallen One) “I activate Sanctuary in the Sky! Now neither of us take no damage when a Fairy is destroyed in battle. I now summon Warrior of Zera in ATK mode and I sacrifice it to summon Archlord Zerato in ATK mode! (2800 ATK) Zerato, attack Elemental Hero Ocean now!”
“I activate Mirror Force! Your monster is destroyed!”
“I’ll set one card facedown (Emergency Provisions) and end my turn”
Greg drew one card (Burial from a Different Dimension) “I activate Polymerization! I fuse Avian and Burstinatrix together to summon Elemental Hero Flame Wingman! (2100 ATK) I now activate Ocean’s special ability! I now bring Avian back to my hand free of charge! Now my monsters, attack Violet directly!”
“I activate Emergency Provisions! By sacrificing my Sanctuary, I gain 1000 LP!”
Greg – 8000 Violet – 5400
Violet drew her next card (Pot of Greed) “I activate Pot of Greed! This allows me to draw two more cards (The Forgiving Maiden and Light of Judgment) I now activate Polymerization! I fuse Marie the Fallen One and The Forgiving Maiden together to summon St. Joan! (2800 ATK) NOW MY MONSTER, ATTACK FLAME WINGMAN NOW!”
Greg – 7300 Violet – 5400
Greg drew his next card (Polymerization) “Thanks to my Elemental Hero Ocean, I can bring Burstinatrix back to my hand. I now activate Polymerization! I fuse Avian and Burstinatrix together to summon Elemental Hero Phoenix Enforcer! (2100 ATK)”
Violet drew her next card (Agent of Force-Mars) Thanks to Marie, I gain 200 LP every turn! St. Joan, attack Elemental Hero Ocean!”
Greg – 6000 Violet – 5400
Greg drew his next card (Pot of Greed) “I activate Pot of Greed! This allows me to draw two cards from my deck (Monster Reborn and Hero Signal) I now activate Monster Reborn! Come on back Elemental Hero Ocean! And don’t forget its effect now, because Avian is coming back to my hand! I now set one monster facedown (Hero Signal) and call it a turn”
On the sideline, Zane turned to Sophia. “Why’s Greg obsessed with his Elemental Hero Ocean?”
Sophia narrowed her eyes at the playing field. “I think I may know. If I’m correct, that facedown Greg played was Hero Signal. That means he’s trying to draw Violet into a trap. If she falls for it…”
“Greg might be able to get another Fusion Monster out” Bastion finished.
Back in the arena, Violet drew her next card (Divine Wrath) I set one card facedown and my monster attacks Elemental Hero Ocean!”
Greg smiled. “You’ve fallen into my trap. I activate Hero Signal! Since you destroyed an Elemental Hero, I can Special Summon one Elemental Hero monster from my deck that has 4 or lower levels and I’ll choose my Bubbleman! (800 ATK)”
Greg – 4700 Violet – 5600
Greg drew his next card. (Polymerization) “I activate another Polymerization! I fuse Bubbleman and Avian together to summon my Elemental Hero Mariner! (1400 ATK) I also set one card facedown. (Burial from a Different Dimension) And since I have a card facedown in my Spell/Trap Zone, Mariner can attack you directly! MARINER, ATTACK VIOLET WITH ANCHOR SHOT ATTACK!”
Greg – 4700 Violet – 4200
Violet drew her next card (Graceful Charity) I activate my Graceful Charity! This allows me to draw 3 cards (Guardian Angel Joan, Sanctuary in the Sky, and Exchange of the Spirit) and discard two of them (Joan and Exchange of the Spirit). I now activate Sanctuary in the Sky and I will attack Mariner with my St. Joan!”
Greg – 3300 Violet – 4400
Greg drew his next card. (Graceful Charity) “I activate my graceful charity! I draw three cards (Sparkman, Clayman, and Miracle Fusion) and discard two of them (Sparkman and Clayman). I then activate Miracle Fusion! I remove Flame Wingman and Sparkman from play to summon my Elemental Hero Shining Flare Wingman! (2500 ATK) And since I have 6 Elemental Heroes in my graveyard, Shining Flare Wingman gets an extra 1800 ATK points, giving it a grand total of 4300 ATK! SHINING FLARE WINGMAN, ATTACK ST. JOAN WITH THUNDERFORCE STRIKE!”
“Greg! You forgot my Field Spell!” Violet called. “I don’t take damage in battle when you destroy a Fairy!”
Greg smiled. “But does your Sanctuary cover effect damage? I didn’t think so because when Shining Flare Wingman destroys a monster, you take damage equal to the monster’s ATK points!”
Greg – 3300 Violet – 1600
Violet drew her next card. (Mirror Force) “I set one card facedown”
Greg – 3300 Violet – 1800
Greg drew his next card (Miracle Fusion) “Shining Flare Wingman, attack and end this duel!”
I activate Mirror Force! All your monsters are destroyed!”
“I knew that was coming. I activate Burial from the Different Dimension! I can select up to three monsters that I own from outside the game and put them into my graveyard. That means Sparkman and Flame Wingman come back to the grave. I then activate Miracle Fusion to remove Phoenix Enforcer and Sparkman from play to bring out Elemental Hero Shining Phoenix Enforcer! (2500 ATK) And it gains 1800 ATK points since I have 6 Heroes in my Graveyard! (4300 ATK) I end my turn”
Violet drew her next card. (Negate Attack) “I set one card face down"
Greg – 3300 Violet – 2000
Greg drew his next card (Fusion Recovery) “I activate Fusion Recovery! This card allows me to take Polymerization and Sparkman out of the graveyard and into my hand. I end my turn”
Violet drew her next card (Monster Reborn) “I activate Monster Reborn! Come forth, Guardian Angel Joan! (2800 ATK)”
Greg – 3300 Violet – 2200
Greg drew his next card (Miracle Fusion) “I activate my Miracle Fusion! I remove Sparkman, Avian, and Bubbleman from play to create Elemental Hero Tempest! (2800 ATK)”
Violet drew her next card (Kishido Spirit) “I activate my Kishido Spirit! That means that when I attack a monster with the same ATK points as my monster, my monster is spared. And thanks to Joan’s ability, I’ll gain LP equal to the destroyed monster’s ATK points. GUARDIAN ANGEL JOAN, ATTACK TEMPEST NOW!”
Greg smirked. I think someone forgot their Effect class. “Not so fast! I activate Tempest’s special ability! I sacrifice my Shining Phoenix Enforcer to prevent Tempest from being destroyed!”
Greg – 3300 Violet – 2400
Greg drew his next card (Righteous Justice) “I activate my Righteous Justice! Since I have one Elemental Hero out, I can destroy one Spell or Trap on the field and I’ll choose your facedown card!”
Violet drew her next card (Inferno Reckless Summon) “I set my draw card facedown”
Greg – 3300 Violet – 2600
Greg drew his next card. (Oversoul) “I activate Oversoul! This card allows me to choose one Elemental Hero monster in my Graveyard and summon it to the field and I think I’ll bring back Clayman in DEF mode (2000 DEF)”
Violet drew her next card (Scapegoat) “I set one card facedown and switch Guardian Angel Joan to DEF mode”
Greg – 3300 Violet – 2800
Greg drew his next card. (Heated Heart) “I activate Heated Heart! This card allows me to increase the ATK of one of my Elemental Hero monsters by 500 and I’ll choose Tempest, raising its ATK to 3300! TEMPEST, ATTACK GUARDIAN ANGEL JOAN NOW!”
Violet drew her next card (Token Thanksgiving) “I set one card facedown”
Greg – 3300 Violet – 3000
Greg drew his next card (Emergency Call) “I activate Emergency Call! This card lets me add Sparkman to my hand even though it’s in my deck!”
Violet drew her next card (Negate Attack) “I set one card facedown”
Greg – 3300 Violet – 3200
Greg drew his next card (HERO Flash) “I remove Heated Heart, Oversoul, Emergency Call, and Righteous Justice from play to play this: HERO FLASH! I Special Summon Elemental Hero Burstinatrix to the field and I switch Clayman to attack mode! And thanks to HERO Flash, my Normal Heroes can attack you directly! BURSTINATRIX AND CLAYMAN, COMBINE YOUR POWERS AND ATTACK VIOLET DIRECTLY!”
“Hold it right there! I activate Negate Attack! Your Battle Phase is over! I’ll also Chain Scapegoat and Token Thanksgiving! Scapegoat gives me 4 tokens and Thanksgiving lets me sacrifice all my tokens to gain 800 LP per token!”
Greg – 3300 Violet – 6400
Violet drew her next card (Agent of Force-Mars) “I summon Agent of Force-Mars in ATK mode! And since I have 3100 more LP than you, Mars gains an extra 3100 ATK points! (3100 ATK) MARS, ATTACK BURSTINATRIX RIGHT NOW!”
Greg – 1400 Violet – 6600
Greg stared grimly at his girlfriend. “You’ve fought hard Violet.”
“Same to you”
“The thought of having it go to waste is a real pity, but it must be done” Greg ended the conversation by drawing his next card (Wroughtweiler) “I summon Wroughtweiler in DEF mode! (1200 DEF) I also switch all my other monsters to DEF (Tempest: 2800; Burstinatrix: 800 DEF) and end my turn”
Violet drew her next card (Light of Judgment) “Thanks to our LP difference, Mars has 5600 ATK points! MARS, ATTACK WROUGHTWEILER NOW!”
“Thanks for destroying my doggie, for when you do I can take Polymerization and Burstinatrix and put it into my hand!”
Greg – 1400 Violet – 6800
Greg drew his final card: Destiny. When he looked at it now, it had the card effect. “I play the card known as Destiny! This card allows me to choose three Fusion monsters in my Fusion Deck and bring them to the field at the cost of 300 LP per monster! Steam Healer, St. Joan, and Dark Paladin come out and play!”
On the sidelines, Sophia gasped “Where did he get that card?”
Christy turned to her cousin “I think it was when he took on Shobu. Remember how he didn’t show us the card or even tell us about it?”
On the arena, Greg smiled. “Now you’ve seen every single Fusion monster in my deck, except for one. So let’s bring him out shall we? I activate Polymerization! I fuse Clayman and Sparkman together to summon Elemental Hero Thunder Giant! (2400 ATK)”
“But Greg!” Violet said. ‘Even with all your monsters you’re just delaying the inevitable! Face it, you’ve lost!”
“That’s where you’re wrong! I discard Burstinatrix to activate Thunder Giant’s special ability! I can destroy one monster on the field whose base attack in lower than Thunder Giant’s. And since Mars’ base ATK is 0, HE’S A TARGET!”
“NO WAY!” Violet shrieked when her monster was blown into a million pieces.
“AND HERE COMES THE BEST PART! THUNDER GIANT CAN STILL ATTACK! NOW MY MONSTERS, ATTACK VIOLET’S LP DIRECTLY AND END THIS DUEL!”
Greg – 500 Violet – 0
“And that’s game” Greg said as he put away his cards.
“Violet put her deck away and gave her boyfriend a big hug and kiss. “Congratulations hero kid”
“Awesome!” Christy shouted as she and the rest of Team Evolution came and mobbed their champion.
Greg shook himself off and walked up to Seto Kaiba, who was holding a golden trophy depicting a Duel Monster card. “Congratulations Greg. You are the new World Champion!”
Greg hoisted his first trophy into the air with a smile on his face. My future…begins now.
End of Episode…but certainly not the end of the season!
