Yu-Gi-Oh! Battle of the Heavens Episode 33: “Battle of the Gods, Part 1”
Whatever it takes. That is what Greg of Team Evolution though as he stood outside the tomb of Atem. The sand was swirling around him, causing his cloak to billow out behind him. Greg stared for a long time at the open door. He was sensing Shadow Powers coming within, but he couldn’t pinpoint it. The duel with Joe had cost him much time. Now it might be too late. Greg threw off his cloak and walked into the darkness. Almost immediately, he was swallowed up and away from the sunlight.

The tomb was dusty. Greg walked down the narrow hallway as silently as he could, which was hard to do while sneezing every few steps. At last, he reached the burial room. It was quite spacious, enough for a coffin and a few large treasures. And on the floor was Sophia. Greg was unaware that he started walking, but within a few seconds, he was by Sophia’s side. Dust obscured her face. Her hair provided was spread out behind her. Just like in his vision. Suddenly, Sophia’s eyes opened. Greg jumped back, startled. A closer look revealed that the eyes were different. And for the first time in his life, Greg was beyond scared; he was terrified. Sophia’s eyes were red. Red with hatred. The vision had come true.

Greg watched with increasing sadness as Sophia got up. Her rising looked liked a zombie coming out of a grave. She kept on staring at him, her red eyes glaring into his. When she had fully risen, she said, “This is all your fault” Greg was taken back. “No, Sophia, it’s not.” “Don’t call me that. I’m not Sophia any longer. I…AM…MARIK!” Greg stared at his cousin. “Forgive me, but I will use your real name. Because I know somewhere inside of you is that person. Beyond all that hatred and anger there is my cousin.” Sophia grinned. “It doesn’t matter. You’ll never set her free. Pretty soon you—along with your cousin—will be trapped in the Shadow Realm, while I walk away with the three Egyptian God cards, which happen to be right here in my deck!” “Not if I have anything to say about it!” “Why don’t you join me? Your powers are beyond anyone else’s. Together, we will take over the world and make things the way we want them to be!” Greg actually mulled it over. It was very tempting. He could take over the world. For a moment he saw all the power that could be his. But then he thought of Violet. He cared about her more than anything. All the time they spent together…it was very special to him. No. I won’t give her up. Not even for the world! He glared at Sophia. “Never” “If you’re not with me, than you’re against me” “Only villains deal in absolutes, Sophia. I’ll now do what I must” Greg stepped back and activated his disk. His deck was already in it. “You will try” Sophia/Marik copied Greg and they each drew five cards. The Battle of the Gods had begun.

Greg looked at his hand. It was pretty good: Avian, Burstinatrix, Polymerization, Swords of Revealing Light, and Hero Barrier. Meanwhile Sophia looked at her hand: Obelisk the Tormentor, Jar of Greed, Statue of the Wicked x2, and Heavy Storm. Greg started his turn. “I summon Elemental Hero Burstinatrix in ATK mode! I then set one card face down (Swords of Revealing Light).” Sophia drew her next card (Infinite Cards). “I play Jar of Greed, which allows me to draw one card (Statue of the Wicked). “I then set three cards face down. I then play Heavy Storm! All Spells and Traps on the field are destroyed. And thanks to Heavy Storm, I get to Special Summon three Wicked Tokens to the field since my three Statue of the Wicked were destroyed. I then sacrifice my three tokens in order to summon the Egyptian God: OBELISK THE TORMENTOR (4000/4000)! NOW MY EGYPTIAN GOD MONSTER, ATTACK BURSTINATRIX WITH FIST OF FURY!”
Greg – 5800 Sophia – 8000
Greg drew his next card (Miracle Fusion) “I play Miracle Fusion! I remove Avian and Burstinatrix from play in order to summon the Elemental Hero Flame Wingman! I also set one card face down.” Sophia drew her next card (Jar of Greed) “I set two cards face down (Jar and Infinite Cards). Obelisk attacks the Flame Wingman.” “Hold it right there! I activate the Trap Card Hero Barrier! Obelisk won’t be smashing my Wingman today Marik!” Greg drew his next card (Pot of Greed). “I play my Pot of Greed! I draw two cards due to its ability.” Greg looked at them and almost dropped them out of shock. They were his Sparkman and Hermos, one of the Atlantean Dragons! “I summon the Elemental Hero Sparkman to the field. AND NOW, COME FORTH MY DRAGON! HERMOS, RISE!” A swirling mass of orange light appeared between Flame Wingman and Sparkman. It suddenly stopped and vanished to reveal Hermos in all its glory. “But I’m not done yet Marik! HERMOS, USE YOUR POWER TO TURN SPARKMAN INTO AN EQUIPMENT CARD!” Hermos’ claw descended upon Sparkman. Orange electricity flowed over the monster until it was reduced to a long javelin with yellow electricity flowing over it. Greg smiled. “Thanks to Hermos, Sparkman is now the Equip Spell Card Spark Javelin! I equip it to my Flame Wingman. Thanks to my Javelin, Wingman gains extra ATK points equal to Sparkman’s ATK AND it can attack you directly! That’s 3700 direct damage! NOW WINGMAN, LAUNCH THAT JAVELIN STRAIGHT TOWARDS HER LP!”
Greg – 5800 Sophia – 4300
Sophia drew her next card (Multiply). “I set one card face down. OBELISK, FINISH OFF THAT WINGMAN RIGHT NOW!” “Hold it Marik! I activate Spark Javelin’s second ability: Spark Bomb! Whenever the monster equipped with Spark Javelin is attacked, I can sacrifice my Equip Spell in order to deal 4000 damage to the attacking monster. AND THAT INCLUDES EGYPTIAN GODS! SEE YA LATER OBELISK!” “NO, NOT MY GOD CARD!” “You see Marik? It doesn’t matter what you play. In the end, it’ll just come tumbling down.” “You think so, do you? Well, next turn will be the beginning of your demise!”
Is Marik bluffing? Well, judging by those face-downs, maybe he isn’t! Find out next episode!
