Yu-Gi-Oh! Battle of the Heavens

Episode 30: “Search for the Gods”

Thebes, Egypt

Greg was in a duel on the city streets. Someone had stolen the Forbidden Deck. Someone had dared to use its power.

It was Joe.

Joe was smiling deviously. Suddenly, his Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon was sacrificed and a new dragon appeared. It was sparkling with blue light and it had a majestic aura around it. It had something else as well.

An aura of power was surrounding the creature.

Greg woke up, startled.

He was panting like a dog and he could barely breathe. A fly was buzzing annoyingly around his head. He tied to swat it, but missed. He lay back down, his mind going over what he had seen. What is the Forbidden Deck? What was that monster? Why would Joe steal something? Greg wondered.

He rolled over, plumping up his pillow. Sand and dust flew everywhere and Greg sneezed.

I can’t wait to get out of here.

In the morning, the three duelists went into a local café in Thebes for breakfast. Joe immediately started to eat. Sophia stared at him for a few seconds while scanning the café. She was trying to find their informer, who had done a good job of evading them so far.

Meanwhile, Greg hadn’t touched anything. Sophia noticed this and turned to him. “Hey, what’s up? To much sand in your bacon?” she cracked a smile.

“Ha, ha, very funny” Greg replied. “Didn’t have a good sleep, that’s all”

“Because of Violet?” Sophia asked.

Greg turned away. “Yes”

“Okay, spill it. That was a lie. What’s bothering you?”

“You can actually tell when I’m lying now? Man, remind me to hang out with you less”

“I know you feel edgy”

“I’m not edgy”

“You just confronted your past for the fourth time! It’s normal that you feel this way”

“OH, SO IT’S NORMAL THAT THE WORLD IS UNDER ATTACK EVERYTIME I GO SOMEWHERE?” Greg had risen to his feet. He was shaking all over. He hadn’t felt this mad since he blew up at Bastion at the Academy for blaming him for the unraveling of time.

Sophia had risen too. She put a hand on Greg’s shoulder. “Calm down” she whispered. “You’ve been through-”

“A LOT MORE THAN YOU HAVE! A MORE THAN EVERYBODY IN TH WORLD HAS DONE PUT TOGETHER! I’VE LOST ALMOST EVERYTHING I’VE EVER CARED ABOUT! NOW I’M TRAVLING THE WORLD TO STOP EVIL CRACKPOTS FROM DESTROYING THE UNIVERSE! NOW I’M IN EGYPT LOOKING FOR A PERSON WHO PROBABLY DOESN’T EXIST! WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THAT?” Greg stormed out of the café, leaving astonished people in his wake.

Joe looked at Sophia. “Is he normally like this?”

Sophia nodded. “Yeah”

Joe looked at Greg’s retreating back. “Ouch”

Greg stormed down the main street of Thebes, anger still pounding through his veins. He was difficult to calm himself down when he got this mad. Dartz, Violet, Jaden, countless people had told him not to get so angry.

Somehow, he found himself at the Theban Egyptian Historic Museum. Strange powers drew him to the place. He went inside, keeping his duel disk ready.

He wandered through the many exhibits, getting closer to the source all the while. He stopped in front of a glass case titled THE FORBIDDEN DECK.

Greg bent closer, curious. “The Forbidden Deck hasn’t been seen in over a century. The monsters in the deck are incredibly powerful, so powerful that the deck could only be welded by a Chosen One. The Chosen One would appear 15 generations after Atem, the last user of the deck, had died. Thanks to Dr. Muto’s expedition, we have the exact deck here to the right.”  Greg flipped through the deck. “Wow, this is some deck.” Greg said aloud. “I don’t think even I could beat it!”

Sophia and Joe were running down the street. They had just seen their contact and he was running away from them!

“Joe, you circle through that ally, I’ll try to herd him over there!” Sophia barked. Joe nodded and disappeared. Now Sophia focused all her attention on the man. She made it seem like she was trying to get inside, so the man round the corner to stop that.

Suddenly, the sounds of fighting erupted! Sophia hurled around the corner to see Joe pinning the contact to the ground. He was thrashing wildly.

Sophia crouched down and the two duelists helped him up and led him to a nearby café, seating him in the middle. While they waited for their food, Sophia asked “Why were you trying to run away from us?”

The man glared “You’re from Anubis or from Marik. They want the God Cards. Judging by your dress you looked like one of them”

Joe spat out his drink. “We’re from Team Evolution” Sophia said hurriedly, trying to calm Joe down. “I’m the heir to Atem, destined to weld the Egyptian God Cards.”

The man smiled. “Sophia? My apologizes. Go to Atem’s tomb and stop at the door and ask for Exxod. He will test you, but you must persevere! If you pass, he will give you the God Cards. Then you can enter the tomb to talk with the Spirit of Atem.”

Sophia stood to leave. “Thanks” She and Joe hurried away.

The contact went to a man in the corner. “Did I do well, Master Marik?”

Marik’s smile gleamed from the shadows. “You did perfect”

Greg and Sophia approached the Tomb of Atem. Joe had went back to the city to get something. When they reached the door, they stopped.

“I wish to see Exxod!” Sophia shouted.

Silence.

Suddenly, the ground in front of them rose upwards! Pretty soon, the mound was taller than the tomb itself! The sand cleared away to reveal a large monster. “I am Exxod, Master of the Guard. I guard Atem and the Egyptian God Cards. In order to get the god cards, you need to pass a test. In order to go inside the tomb, you need the cards. Are you ready? Your test is…a duel. Defeat me in a duel and you get the Egyptian God cards.”

Greg sprang forward. “I accept!” His duel disk was already activated and his deck was already in.

Exxod turned to him. “Not you. The other one shall duel me”

Sophia stepped forward. She placed her deck into her duel disk and activated it. “All right Exxod, let’s duel!”
