Yu-Gi-Oh! Battle of the Heavens

Episode 32: “Battle of the Heroes”

Thebes, Egypt.

A lone figure stood in the center of the street. His duel disk was activated and a deck was in it. He appeared to be waiting for someone. The wind kicked up the dust and it swirled around him. The wind blew the hood off to reveal the face of Joe. He took off the cloak to reveal his outfit: black slacks, black T-shirt, and a black trench coat. When he spoke, his voice was husky.

“It’s nearly time. Soon, Greg shall be out of the way and nothing would be able to stop me from claiming the three Egyptian God cards.”

*          *          *

Greg was dashing down the street of Thebes, his cloak billowing behind him. everyone—that is, everyone who could duel reasonably—said that the stranger came up, challenged him or her, and then everything was a blank until he woke up, discovering that the mystery duelist had vanished. Greg, so far, had pieced together a possibility that Joe had invoked some sort of Shadow Power, but that was impossible. Shadow Powers can only be accessed through a Shadow Game, and a Shadow Game can only accessed through the Millennium Rod.

Greg stopped dead in his tracks. Of course! Marik! Joe is being possessed by Marik, who can access the Shadow Game through the Millennium Rod! That means Marik has to be near Joe in order to create the game, so that means Marik is controlling Joe’s moves. I have to be prepared.

Greg rounded a corner and then stopped cold. Standing at the other end of the street, without a cloak, was Joe.

Time seemed to slow down. Greg and Joe’s eyes met and a fire leaped out. Greg threw off his cloak and activated his duel disk is a smooth motion. He then took his deck out and slammed it in.

The people caught between Greg and Joe took one look and backed away, realizing that they should not be caught in the cross fire.

Joe glared at his opponent. “I knew you’d come after me.”

Greg pointed at Joe’s disk. “I’ve come for the deck…and for you.”

“Forget it”

“Well, I’ll get that deck back, even if I have to wrestle you to the ground in order to get it.”

“How about a less…physical way of getting the deck back: a duel. You win, you get the deck. You lose, and you’re BANISHED TO THE SHADOW REALM!”

“I think you’ve gone off the deep end. But still, I’d like to take you on…Marik

“Who?”

“Marik. Come on, you can’t fool me. How else could you invoke a Shadow Power?”

“Stop talking and start dueling”

“Fine by me”

“You’re going down”

“Yeah, down in history for being the first person to beat the Forbidden Deck!”

Greg – 8000                 Joe – 8000

The two duelists drew five cards. Greg’s hand was decent: Avian, Burstinatrix, Swords of Revealing Life, E – Emergency Call, and Scapegoat. Joe’s hand, however, was magnificent: Red Eyes B. Chick, Red Eyes Black Dragon, Red Eyes Darkness Dragon, Inferno Fire Blast, and Pot of Greed.

Greg drew his card (H – Heated Heart). “I summon Elemental Hero Avian in DEF mode. Then I throw down two face downs (Emergency Call and Scapegoat) and call it a turn”

Joe drew his next card (Burst Stream of Destruction) “I summon Red Eyes B. Chick in DEF mode. I then sacrifice it to summon my Red Eyes Black Dragon. I then activate the spell card Inferno Fire Blast, which deals 2400 damage to your life points! I then sacrifice my Red Eyes Black Dragon to Special Summon RED EYES DARKNESS DRAGON (2400/2000)! And that’s not all! Since I have 2 Dragons in my graveyard, Darkness Dragon gains another 600 ATK points, raising it to 3000. I then play the Spell card Pot of Greed, which lets me draw two more cards (Dragon’s Rage and Kaibaman). I then play the Trap card Dragon’s Rage, which allows all excess damage my Dragons deal to your Life Points! I also place one card face down. NOW, RED EYES DARKNESS DRAGON, ATTACK AVIAN WITH DARK INFERNO BLAST!”

Greg – 3600                 Joe – 8000

Greg shakily got up. Okay, maybe this isn’t one of my brightest ideas ever, but I’ve got to get going and duel or I’m in trouble! Greg drew his next card (Miracle Fusion). This might be the start of something! Greg thought. “I activate the card E – Emergency Call! With it I can select one E-Hero from my deck and bring it to my hand and I choose Clayman. I then summon it in Defense Mode. I then activate the Spell Card Miracle Fusion! I remove Elemental Heroes Burstinatrix and Clayman from the game to Fusion Summon Elemental Hero Rampart Blaster in DEF mode! And since it’s in DEF mode, it can lob 1000 direct damage to your LP. NOW RAMPART BLASTER, ATTACK WITH RAMPART BARRAGE!”

Greg – 3600                 Joe – 7000

Joe drew his next card (Blue Eyes White Dragon). “I play Kaibaman in DEF mode. I then sacrifice it in order to Special Summon my Blue Eyes White Dragon! NOW DARKNESS DRAGON, ATTACK RAMPART BLASTER! BLUE EYES; ATTACK GREG’S LIFE POINTS DIRECTLY WITH WHITE LIGHTNING ATTACK!”

Greg – 100                   Joe – 7000

Greg was struck dumb. In the space of two turns, Joe—No, Marik, Greg reminded himself—had reduced himself to 100 LP. After shaking his head, Greg drew his next card (Pot of Greed). “I activate the Spell Card Swords of Revealing Light! You can’t attack for three turns!  Then I play Pot of Greed, letting me draw two cards (Polymerization and United We Stand). I then summon Elemental Hero Avian in ATK mode. I then activate my face down Scapegoat! And then I play the Equip Spell Card United We Stand! And since I have 5 monsters in play, Avian gets an extra 4000 ATK and DEF Points! NOW AVIAN, ATTACK RED EYES DARKNESS DRAGON WITH FEATHERBREAK ATTACK!”

Greg – 100                   Joe – 5000

Joe drew his next card (Mystical Space Typhoon). “I set one card face down.”

Greg drew his next card (Mystical Space Typhoon) “I play Mystical Space Typhoon! Say goodbye to your Dragon’s Rage! Avian attacks your Blue Eyes!”

Greg – 100                   Joe – 3000

Joe drew his next card (Pot of Avarice). “I activate the Spell Card Mystical Space Typhoon, which destroys your United We Stand! I then play the card known as Pot of Avarice. You see, since I have more than five monsters in my graveyard, I can choose five of those monsters and shuffle them into my deck, and then I get to draw two cards! The monsters I choose are Red Eyes Darkness Dragon, Kaibaman, Blue Eyes White Dragon, Red Eyes Black Dragon, and Red Eyes B. Chick! I then draw two cards (Kaibaman and Blue Eyes). Then I summon Kaibaman in DEF mode and I sacrifice it in order to summon Blue Eyes White Dragon! I then activate the Spell Card Burst Stream of Destruction! All monsters on your side of the field are destroyed!”

Greg drew his next card (Elemental Hero Bubbleman) “Since I have only one card in my hand, I can Special Summon that card to the field: Elemental Hero Bubbleman in DEF Mode! And since I have no other cards on the field or in my hand, I can draw two more cards (Elemental Hero Clayman and Hero Barrier). And don’t forget I still have my Normal Summon, which allows me to bring out my Elemental Hero Clayman in DEF mode. I then play Polymerization! I fuse Clayman and Bubbleman together to summon Elemental Hero Mudballman in DEF mode! I then set one card face down”

Joe drew his next card (White Dragon Ritual) “I set one card face down”

Greg drew his next card. (Monster Reborn) “I play Monster Reborn to bring back my Elemental Hero Avian in DEF mode!”

Joe drew his next card (Luster Dragon). “I summon Luster Dragon in ATK mode (1900 ATK). Blue Eyes attacks Avian.”

“I reveal my face-down Trap! Activate Hero Barrier! This allows me to negate one of your attacks as long as I have an Elemental Hero out. So Avian still stands!”

Greg drew his next card (Swords of Revealing Light) “Hey Marik, I have an old friend for you: Swords of Revealing Light! I guess you know the drill, so go on with your turn.”

Joe drew his next card (Paladin of White Dragon) “I activate White Dragon Ritual! I sacrifice my Luster Dragon in order to summon my Paladin of White Dragon! I then sacrifice my monster in order to summon another Blue Eyes White Dragon!”

Greg drew his next card (De-fusion). “I play the Spell Card De-fusion! This allows me to split up my Mudballman into its two separate parts: Clayman and Bubbleman (both are in DEF mode)!”

Joe drew his next card (Monster Reborn) “I activate the Spell Card Monster Reborn in order to bring back BLUE EYES WHITE DRAGON!”

Greg drew his next card (Burstinatrix) “I discard my draw card to draw a new card (Pot of Avarice). I then play Pot of Avarice! I shuffle my five monster cards into my deck and then I draw 2 new cards! (Burstinatrix and Elemental Burst) I then summon my Elemental Hero Burstinatrix in ATK mode. Then I activate the Trap Card Elemental Burst! You see Marik, if I have an Earth, Water, Fire, and a Wind monster on the field, I can sacrifice all of them in order to destroy all your monsters! AND THAT IS WHAT I’M GOING TO DO RIGHT NOW! I guess you won’t be seeing your Shining Dragon, will you?”

Joe drew his next card (Return from the Different Dimension) “I set one card face down”

Greg drew his next card (Miracle Fusion). “I play Miracle Fusion! I remove Avian and Burstinatrix from play to summon ELEMENTAL HERO FLAME WINGMAN! ATTACK JOE NOW WITH INFERNAL RAGE!”

Greg – 100                   Joe – 900

Joe smiled evilly when he drew his next card. “Greg, you do know that here is more than one way to skin a lion, do you? Here’s the other way: DRAGON’S MIRROR! I REMOVE MY THREE BLUE EYES WHITE DRAGONS FROM PLAY IN ORDER TO SUMMON BLUE EYES ULTIMATE DRAGON!

Greg was confused. “Wait, you’re not attacking me?”

“No”

“All right”

Greg drew his next card. (Elemental Hero Sparkman) “I discard my Sparkman to draw one more card (R – Righteous Justice). Then I play Righteous Justice, which allows me to destroy your only face down since I have one Hero in play. Then I’ll switch my Wingman into DEF mode.”

Joe drew his next card. “I NOW SACRIFICE MY ULTIMATE DRAGON TO BRING FORTH A CREATURE WHOSE ANCIENT POWERS WILL BRING ME VICTORY! A CREATURE WHO CAN NEW BE TARGETED! A CREATURE WHOSE POWER IS ASTRONOMICAL! BLUE EYES SHINING DRAGON! AND SINCE I HAVE 3 DRAGONS IN MY GRAVEYARD, MY DRAGON GET AN EXTRA 900 ATK POINTS, GIVING IT A GRAND TOTAL OF 3900 POINTS!”

Greg drew his next card (O - Oversoul). It looked like Joe was regaining control of his mind, but he couldn’t be sure. “I play Oversoul! I bring Sparkman back to my hand and then I discard it to draw a new card (Miracle Fusion). I then play Miracle Fusion! I remove Sparkman, Avian, and Bubbleman from play in order to bring out my favorite card: ELEMENTAL HERO TEMPEST (DEF mode)!”

Joe drew his next card (Luster Dragon) “I discard my Luster Dragon to draw a new card (Mountain) “I play Mountain, increasing my Shining Dragon’s ATK and DEF by 200 points (4400/2700)”

Greg drew his next card and smiled. He turned to his friend. “This duel is over!”

Joe/Marik turned pale. “You lie” Greg noted that the voice was huskier, more hideous than it was before.

“BEHOLD THE SPELL CARD HERO FLASH! YOU SEE, SINCE I HAVE HEATED HEART, EMERGENCY CALL, RIGHTEOUS JUSTICE, AND OVERSOUL IN MY GRAVEYARD, I CAN REMOVE THEM FROM PLAY IN ORDER TO ACTIVATE HERO FLASH’S TWO ABILITIES! THE FIRST ONE IS SPECIAL SUMMONING AN ELEMENTAL HERO FROM MY HAND OR DECK AND I CHOOSE MY SPARKMAN! THE NEXT EFFECT, HOWEVER, WILL GIVE ME THE DUEL: FORE THIS TURN, ALL MY ELEMENTAL HEROES CAN ATTACK DIRECTLY! THAT MEANS YOUR SHINING DRAGON CANNOT PROTECT YOUR LP! AND I DON’T THINK YOUR LP CAN STAND UP TO OVER 6000 DIRECT DAMAGE, CAN THEY? NOW MY HEROES, COMBINE YOUR POWERS AND ATTACK MARIK DIRECTLY!”

The three heroes stood side by side and raised a fist up. A swirling nimbus of light swirled around it. Suddenly, the heroes leapt into the sky and dived right through Joe/Marik, nimbus first. Greg’s opponent collapsed to the ground, electricity and fire flowing over his body as his LP turned to 0.

Greg – 100                   Joe – 0

There was a muffled cry in the shadows next to Joe. Greg walked over to them and saw Marik lying on the ground unconscious. Then, right before his eyes, the body disappeared into the sand. Greg hurried back to his friend, who just gotten to his feat.

Greg searched Joe’s eyes and saw a familiar light in them. His friend was back.

Greg smiled put a hand on Joe’s shoulder. “Welcome back my friend”

Joe looked down, embarrassed. “I’m sorry about the deck, I’ll-“. He broke off and stared at Greg, who was holding his head.

Greg, in his minds eye, saw Sophia on the ground in pain with a shadow looming over her. She was in trouble!

Tears flowed down his eyes. I should’ve stayed with her.

But then the tears stopped. But now, it’s up to me to save her. And I’ll do it.

Whatever it takes.
