Yu-Gi-Oh! Battle of the Heavens

Episode 29: “Flashbacks in the Sand”

Sand blew across the barren ground of the Sahara Desert. Nothing was in sight for miles around except sand, sand, and more sand. The only thing moving were three camels on the horizon, heading east towards the Red Sea and the Nile. All three travelers had cloaks wrapped around themselves and scarves wrapped around their faces.

“Only two miles from Thebes”, said a female voice at the front of the line. The people behind her nodded in reply. However, the motion caused a scarf to fall off. As the owner picked it up, he looked up at the sun, revealing his face.

It was Greg. Team Evolution had arrived in Egypt.

I hate sand, Greg thought.

He stared blankly ahead as he and his companions, Sophia and Joe, walked down the main road of Thebes. They were looking for an informer would lead them to the Egyptian God Cards.

As they walked on, Greg’s mind wandered to home: Duelist Academy. He missed his dorm. He missed its secret passageways.

Most of all, his missed Violet.

Violet and Bastion, who was another member of Team Evolution, were in Domino City in Japan helping to rebuild the city after the Norse Gods, lead by Deanna Shadowwalker, had rampaged throughout the city. That was Team Evolution’s first mission.

It was both a complete success and fiasco.

The final duel with Deanna…no, I mustn’t think of it, Greg berated himself. It is too painful to remember.

But he did.

(flashback)

“Give it up Greg!” Deanna sneered. “You can’t defeat the combined power of the Norse Gods! Face it, you have lost!”

Greg looked at himself. He was wearing Atlantean battle armor and his duel disk was strapped across his body. In front of him was Critias and Zeus, the most powerful of the Atlantean and Greek Gods respectively. He was the last one standing.

Suddenly, Loki, the Norse God of Darkness, unleashed his energies at Greg. Greg braced himself, knowing that he might not survive.

Suddenly, bright light surrounded the playing field. It cut through the Norse Gods and Deanna. However, when the light left, Athena was in front of Greg and Loki was in front of Deanna. She was bloody…and angry.

“Now Athena, unleash the power of light!” Greg ordered.

Athena raised her hands, and released a nimbus of golden light. It was halfway to Loki when the Norse God unleashed his shadow energy. The powers met head on, connecting. The glowing ball in the center inched one way, then the other way as the two monsters unleashed more power.

Greg stared at the connection and something clicked. It was dangerous, it might even cost him his life, but he had to.

For the sake of the entire world.

“Athena, I am going to sacrifice my soul to you. Only then will you beat Deanna. Do you understand?”

The divine being nodded. Greg took a deep breath and felt his soul leaving him. When it was done, he collapsed to the ground, next to Violet, unconscious.

Athena’s energies were growing brighter by the second. With one last push, the light broke through the shadow and Loki and Deanna were consumed by the light.

The world was saved.

(end flashback)

Greg thought of all the people who had died in that rampage. But he had prevented an apocalypse.

For the second time.

Before that, he restored time. The price? Killing one of his only remaining family members.

His father.

“Well, well, well. Dwelling on the past again, are we?”

Greg turned to see the image of his father smiling at him. “No. I’m trying to forget the past.”

Greg turned away, holding his gauntlet. “But the past won’t let go.”

“What you need to realize is that the past will never go. You need to use it to go to victory. Remember that.”

When Greg turned again, Dartz was gone.

Suddenly, Joe walked up. Greg looked at him. He had discovered enormous power in the kid while in Domino City. Joe was in training to become another member of Team Evolution. He had the basic training deck (an E-Hero deck, of course) and was learning how to use his powers.

“Sophia said that we’re going to stop for the day at the next hotel. She’s tired and she thinks you are too.”

Greg nodded and walked on, still absorbed within his own thoughts. They walked past a card dealer. Greg’s gauntlet hand brushed against the table and he collapsed, a vision forming.

Sand was swirling into the air. A great pyramid looked before him. Inside was Sophia, trapped with the remains of Atem and the Egyptian God Cards. He had to get in there!

The scene changed, going inside the pyramid. There was Sophia, collapsed upon the ground, dust obscuring her face. Greg bent down and Sophia’s eyes opened.

They were red. Red with hatred.

“All you all right?” the card dealer said in Egyptian.

Greg nodded and hurried after his friends, who had just found a hotel. What does that vision mean? Greg wondered. Will Sophia, my own cousin, turn evil? Will she be corrupted by power? This is her second major test, but welding the power of the gods is more draining than saving the world.

There is only one thing to do. I have to stick to her like glue. I can’t let her out of my sight. If I have to, I’ll have Joe tail her. I can’t let her turn evil or do something stupid. She is the only family member I have left.

I can’t let her go.
