Episode 16: “Ultimate Challenge, Part 3”
Greg started across the ruined room at his father, Dartz. They were dueling to determine the fate of the universe. Greg only had 300 LP, but Dartz had 400. But Dartz had three creatures, Greg had none. Plus, it was Dartz’s turn!
Dartz drew his card. (Chthonian Blast) “I set one card face down”
Greg drew his card. (Draining Shield) How will this card help me?! Greg thought. It won’t stop Dartz for long. What I need is-
But before he could finish his thought, his soul was being dragged from him. He saw that he was flying through a portal. Suddenly, he found himself in a large room. In front of him were three swords. Suddenly, he heard a voice.
“Welcome Greg”
Greg spun around. He then pinched himself to make sure he wasn’t dreaming (He wasn’t): He was staring at E-Hero Tempest! “Tempest?!” Greg asked. “How...you’re…its impossible!”
“Not quite. You see, like Kaiba, Yugi, Atem, and Joey before you; you have journeyed into the world of Duel Monsters.”
“But why am I here?”
“You are here because who need to save us. If Dartz succeeds, not only will your universe cease to exists, but our world will be plunged into chaos!
“In order to succeed, you will need help from three beings. That is all. Return, and know this: the Heart of the Cards is with you. Farewell.”
Greg then felt himself being dragged back into his own body. He opened his eyes and knew what he must do. “I set one card face-down”
Dartz didn’t bother to look at his draw card. “Farewell son. NOW GATE GAURDIAN ATTACK GREG’S LP DIRECTLY”
Greg stared unflinchingly at the massive fist of Gate Guardian coming towards him. He bent down and with superhuman effort, picked up Violet and Sophia and held them close.
“I’m sorry” he whispered. “I failed. But even in the world of the Orikalcos, I’ll always protect you.”
Suddenly, a bright purple light suddenly appeared in front of him. Greg looked at his duel disk to see purple electricity dance along its length. When he looked back, he saw something that took his breath away: standing in front of him was a majestic purple dragon. Greg recognized him immediately. “It’s Critias!”
Greg knew what he must do, even though he did not understand it. “Critias, fuse together with my face down card to create Life Shield Dragon! Now my dragon, attack Dartz NOW!”
Suddenly, his left shoulder felt burning hot, but he didn’t look. He was watching Critias: The great dragon was releasing rainbow energy from its mouth straight at Dartz! The energy went right through the monsters and struck Dartz head-on. The man screamed. Greg covered is ears and closed his eyes, praying that it would end. It suddenly stopped. Greg opened his eyes. Dartz and Critias were gone. Greg then heard someone walking towards them. But before he could cry out, Greg, along with Violet and Sophia, fell to the floor and blacked out.
When Greg woke up, he discovered that he was in Jaden’s office. Jaden, Violet, and Sophia were not there. Instead of calling out, Greg just sat there in shock.
Dartz was his father. His father was a person who wanted to destroy the world. Greg looked at his wrist. The scar shown pearly white. Greg felt anger flow though him. He wanted to be gone. He wanted to hunt Dartz. But before he could move, the door behind him opened.
Jaden entered the room. He looked weary. “Good, you’re awake” he said as he sat down in front of Greg.
“Let me go” Greg whispered.
“Pardon?”
“I SAID LET ME GO! I AM TIRED OF THIS! I AM TIRED OF BEING STARED AT! I AM TIRED OF BEING FAMOUS! I HAVE SEEN AND HEARD ENOUGH! YOU HERE ME? ENOUGH!” Greg hadn’t felt this way before. He wanted to turn around and walk out of the room.
Jaden looked at him. “Listen to me: Critias didn’t appear for know reason. My theory is that you are destined to weld the three dragons. Look at your left shoulder.”
Greg lifted his sleeve. On it was a scar of a fang. “What is that?”
“That is the Fang of Critias. It only appears on people who are chosen by the Atlantean Dragons to weld them. You see, the dragons will only come to, and obey, people of Atlantean blood. Since Dartz is your father (Greg winced) it seems natural that the dragons chose you.”
Greg was exhausted. He just wanted to sleep. His heart was heavy. He needed to let it out. As if he read his mind, Jaden said “You’re free to go. I suggest you get some sleep”
Greg ran to his dorm as fast as he could, ignoring the cries of students around him. When he arrived at his bed, he flung himself on it and wept. He couldn’t stand it anymore. It was all too much.
Suddenly, he felt a comforting hand on his shoulder. Though tear-filled eyes, he saw Violet was with him. Not knowing what else to do, he leaned against her. She didn’t say anything, but she held him.
Greg didn’t know what to do. He needed to talk to someone. “I’m afraid” he whimpered.
Violet rocked him. “Shhh. It’s okay. I’m here.”
“I don’t want to see him again”
“You don’t have to”
“I’ll have to see him alone. I might always be alone!”
Violet pressed her lips to his hair. “You’ll never be alone. I’ll always be with you”
Greg nodded. He separated himself from Violet and went into bed. Violet stayed on the bed next to him. She decided to stay until he fell asleep.
Greg was so tired. Before he fell asleep, he heard someone say something: first, a female’s voice said “I’ll always be with you.” Another voice said “You have won your first battle. But prepare yourself for more.”
Right, Greg thought. I WILL win those battles. Dartz will never win. My friends will always be in my heart.
Then he fell asleep, his dreams filled with dragons.
