The Misunderstood

Verse 1: “The Beginning”

Gregor was walking home from school very slowly. He knew what would be waiting for him as soon as he got back home: his parents would yell at him for being slow, hurry up and eat snack, do your work and what the heck, let’s add some more work to it for every time you’re late! Gregor grounded his teeth in frustration. Sometimes he wished that he could be taken away from this life.

A lot sooner than he expected, he was at his house. He never called it “home”; home was where you had nice parents. Gregor gave a dejected sigh and slowly walked up the front steps and into the house.

“THERE YOU ARE!” came a shriek from the living room. Gregor sighed again.

Right on schedule.

Mrs. Frasier, Gregor’s foster mother, came bounding into the room. She looked furious. “I’VE TOLD TO GET HOME RIGHT AT THREE! YOU KNOW WHAT TIME IT IS NOW?!”

Gregor felt anger simmering. “No”

“THREE O FIVE! YOU’RE FIVE MINUTES LATE! THAT MEANS NO SNACK AND AN EXTRA FIVE MINUTES TO WORK FOR YOU!”

Gregor stood with his mouth hanging open. This, he thought, was the ultimate low. Just for being five minutes late there is no snack and an extra five minutes of work?! That’s not fair! “Wait just a minute! That is-” he stopped short when he received a slap across the face.

Gregor stared for a minute and then the anger he had been keeping under lock and key burst lose “GET OUT OF MY LIFE!” he screamed at the top of his lungs. Then he ran to his room, leaving his foster mother looking bewildered behind him.

When he arrived in his room, he locked his door. He know his foster father would just break it down, but he didn’t care. He just sat down on his bed and applied moisturizer to his slapped cheek. He didn’t cry. H then picked up his guitar and started to sing “Behind These Hazel Eyes” by Kelly Clarkson”

“Seems like just yesterday

You were a part of me

I used to stand so tall

I used to be so strong

Your arms around me tight

Everything felt so right

Unbreakable, like nothing could go wrong

“Now I can’t breathe

I can’t sleep

I’m barely hanging on

“Here I am, once again

I’m torn into pieces

Can’t deny it, can’t pretend

Just thought you were the one

Broken up, deep inside

But you won’t see the tears I cry

Behind These Hazel Eyes”

As Greg played the final chord, he realized what he must do. He had nowhere to go, but he must find a living somewhere.

That night, a lone figure could be dimly seen walking across the lawn. He was dragging a suitcase and a guitar case

Gregor was running away.

Alicia was in her room doing homework…and feeling sorry for herself.

You see, Alicia isn’t the average 14 year old girl. Unlike Gregor, her parents were nice and caring. However, she had no friends.

She was one of the best singers in her class. Probably that was the reason that everyone hated her. She was so good at everything. She could never do anything wrong.

To make matters worse, her parents loved her, but they thought she was geeky. She had no sympathy from them what so ever.

As she worked on a particular algebra problem, she started to sing “Wake Up” by Hilary Duff.

“There’s people talking

They talk about me

They know my name

They think they no everything

But they don’t know anything

About me

Give me a dance floor

Give me a DJ

Give me a record

Forget what they say

Cause I need to go

Need to getaway tonight…”

Wow, Alicia thought. Its amazing how this song can describe exactly how I feel. I want a life more then what I have. But where can I get it?

Suddenly, Alicia’s mom opened the door. “Here honey, it’s a letter for you”

“Thanks” Alicia took the letter graciously. Anything that distracted her from the math problem was good in her book!

“Hmm” Alicia said out loud. “No return address. I wonder…” She opened the letter, which is as follows:

Get out of this city. Nobody wants you or likes you. If you stay, life will become hell.

Alicia threw the letter out the window. She was shaking. That was it. Nobody was going to threaten her and get away with it. She was leaving. Maybe then she could find where she belonged.

Alicia was at the mall. She needed supplies. She had found a cheap apartment and now she needed the important things: food, fresheners, and so on. As she was walking towards a cosmetics supply store, she heard someone singing part of a song, which she quickly recognized as the second verse of “Behind These Hazel Eyes”

“I told you everything

Opened up and let you in

You made me feel all right

For once in my life

Now all that’s left of me

Is what I pretend to be

So together, but so broken up inside

‘Cause I can’t breathe

No, I can’t sleep

I’m barely hangin’ on…”

By this time, Alicia was within a crowd gathered around the music. Alicia saw that the musician/singer was none other than  a teenage boy about her age with jet black hair, red T-shirt, white sweats, and a black jacket. He had a guitar in hand and had just started the rest of the song:

“Here I am, once again

I’m torn into pieces

Can’t deny it, can’t pretend

Just thought you were the one

Broken up, deep inside

But you won’t get to see the tears I cry

Behind These Hazel Eyes

“Swallow me then spit me out

For hating you I blame myself

Seeing you, it kills me now

No, I don’t cry on the outside

Anymore…

“Here I am, once again

I’m torn into pieces

Can’t deny it, can’t pretend

Just thought you were the one

Broken up, deep inside

But you won’t get to see the tears I cry

Behind These Hazel Eyes

“Here I am, once again

I’m torn into pieces

Can’t deny it, can’t pretend

Just thought you were the one

Broken up, deep inside

But you won’t get to see the tears I cry

Behind These Hazel Eyes”

The cheering was so loud that Alicia had to cover her ears. The kid is sensational, she thought. All around her people were throwing in bills and coins.

Pretty soon, the crowd melted away. The kid was packing up his things. Before she knew it, Alicia was right next to the singer. She tapped him on the shoulder and he looked up. His eyes were like crystal, she saw. And they were deep, very deep…and she saw something else that made her want to comfort him: there was a lost and hurt look in his eyes, like someone who doesn’t know where to go. “Yes?” the boy asked.

Alicia held out a $20 bill. “Here. Anybody with your voice deserves it.”

“Thanks” The boy took the bill and stuffed it into his pocket.

“How long have you been here?” Alicia asked.

“Since yesterday. I ran away from home so I have to find some way to make a living, don’t I?”

Alicia didn’t notice it, but they were walking side by side. She felt drawn towards this boy. She couldn’t place it, but she felt a longing that she couldn’t understand. “If it makes you feel any better, I’m also a runaway. I have no friends and they talk about me behind my back, spreading lies, rumors, the lot”

“Well, the only one who knows the real you is yourself.”

“I want a life more than what I had. But I don’t know were to go!”

“How about London?” Alicia whipped around and saw the boy smiling.

She smiled too, and she realized he was referring to “Wake Up”. “London, Paris, maybe Tokyo…”

“…There’s something going on, anywhere I go tonight, tonight, yeah tonight.”

Without either of them noticing it, they started singing together.

“People all around you everywhere that you go

People all around you, they don’t really know you

Everybody watching like its some kind of show

Everybody’s watching, they don’t really know you now

And forever…

“Wake up, wake up

On a Saturday night

Could be New York

Maybe Hollywood and Vine

London, Paris, maybe Tokyo

Something’s going on, anywhere I go…

“Wake up, wake up

On a Saturday night

Could be New York

Maybe Hollywood and Vine

London, Paris, maybe Tokyo

Something’s going on, anywhere I go

Tonight

Tonight

Yeah, tonight”

Alicia stared at the boy and realized that she was missing one thing. “What’ your name?”

“Gregor. And yours?”

“Alicia. You have a marvelous voice”

“You should talk. Have you thought of taking singing professionally?”

By this time, they were outside into the bustling streets of New York City. Something then caught Gregor’s eye. “Hey, look over there!” he said, pointing at a sign.

Alicia saw it and read: “Get ready for a battle like now other! The Battle of the Bands! Win, and you get a free world tour! Must have a least 4 members to join. Sign up now!” Alicia grasped Gregor’s hand, then quickly let go. “Gregor, this could be the chance I’ve been waiting for! This could give me a chance to see where my path lies! We’re good singers, but we need a guitarist or two and a drummer. Where are we going to find them?”

Gregor smiled. “There are two people…”
