Delian Defense League

Episode 3: “Fighters in the Sky”

Place: Paris, France

Event: World War III

The skies above Paris were lit up with dazzling lights. Lights from lasers.

Greg took his personalized Phoenix Fighter, the Fire Angel X, into a tight spiral, all four laser cannons blazing. The four fighters he’d been tailing blew up in a ball of flame.

“Nice shot Greg!” a voice crowed over the intercom. Greg grimaced as he recognized Joe’s voice.

“Rebel Three, please remember military protocol. It’s ‘Rebel Leader’” called Marina over the comm.

Greg sighed as he punched his way into the conversation. “Rebel Three and Rebel Four, this is Rebel Leader. Cut the chatter. I’m going in. Rebels Two and Three, cover me.”

“Rebel Two copies” Francesca replied.

“Rebel Three copies” Joe grumbled.

With he two friends behind him, Greg swung his ship around and locked his lasers on three US Firebolts. When he was a meter away, Greg blazed in. All the Firebolts were wiped out in a flash.

As Greg recovered from his attack he called out over the comm, “Rebel Four, this is Rebel Leader. Do you see the objective from where you are?”

“Yeah I do!” Marina yelled in reply. “It’s forward guns are trying to blow me out of the sky!”

“Rebels Two and Three, did you get that?”

“Loud and clear” Joe answered.

“Alright. We’re going in full throttle and all guns blazing. Crippling shots only.”

“Rebel Two here. Leader, are you nuts?! That thing has enough firepower to wipe out France!”

“I know, but we have to do this. Okay?”

“Not really, but okay”

“Alright, divert all power to the engines!” Greg called over the comm as he and his friends streaked across the sky. “Let’s finish this!”

The primary objective, the US capital ship Democracy, was in charge of wiping out all resistance in France. So far, it was failing…badly.

The Democracy’s commander wrapped her black cloak tightly around herself. How could Greg be this predictable? She wondered. He’s playing right into my hands!

An officer stepped forward. “Commander, what are your orders?”

I think its time to spring our trap, she thought. “Captain, our work is finished. Prepare to warp”

“Our destination?”

“The Pentagon”

“As you wish”

“Rebel Leader, this is Rebel Four. Something’s happening with the Democracy. It looks like she’s…”

“Preparing to warp!” Greg finished. “Marina, do you have the coordinates?”

“Yes”

“Send them over. I’m following her”

As he waited, Greg relentlessly fired his lasers at the Democracy’s thick hull, but they absorbed the blows.

“Coordinates sent. Greg, you sure this is a good idea?”

“It’s a last resort.” Greg replied, switching over to squadron frequency. “Rebel Squadron, this is Rebel Leader. Do anything you can to stop that ship from warping!”

*          *          *

“Commander! Enemy fighters coming in!”

“How many?”

“Four”

“It’s Rebel Squadron. They’re more foolish than I thought. How long until we warp?”

“Whenever you’re ready, Commander”

“Good. Warp in one minute. Meanwhile, divert all available power to shields. Let’s play with them for a bit.”

*          *          *

“It’s no good!” Joe cried. “Nothing can get through those shields!”

“We have to try.” Greg replied grimly. “Rebel Squadron, in one minute, fire all missiles at their engines. It might be the only way to stop them.”

“Copy that!” Francesca answered as she fired her lasers at the Democracy’s bridge. As she passed over she saw the Commander’s face…and recognized it.

“Rebel Two to Rebel Leader”

“I copy, Rebel Two”

“Leader, you’re not going to like this. Sophia’s the commander of the Democracy

*          *          *

“Captain!” Sophia screeched. “They’ve recognized me! Warp now!”

“Yes Commander” replied the Captain, turning to the bridge crew. “You heard the lady! Warp!”

*          *          *

“Cancel the missile attack!” Greg broadcasted over the squadron frequency. “Sophia’s onboard the ship!”

“All the more reason to continue the attack” Marina replied.

“Rebel Leader, this is Rebel Two. It’s too late. The Democracy is about to warp”

“Alright. You three pull out. I’m going alone.”

“No way” Francesca replied firmly. “I’m coming with you too.”

“Rebel Two, I’m ordering you to pull out” Greg replied, feeling his heart break as he did so. “Does everyone copy?”

“Copy” Joe replied.

The Democracy finished its turn and warped, Greg not far behind it. Francesca stared at the spot where the Fire Angel X—and Greg—was a few seconds before.

“Please be careful” Francesca whispered, a tear falling down her cheek as she reluctantly made her way to the surface. “Please come back to me.”
