AE/AE: The College Chronicles

Episode 2: “Out of Road”

Location: Gotham City, USA

Time: 7:00 AM Eastern Time

Myles College woke up, got out of bed, got dressed, brushed his teeth, and walked downstairs to the kitchen. His wife Victoria was already sitting at the table…with Hector Crane, famous vigilante.

Myles raised an eyebrow, walking to the fridge. “Never thought I’d live to see this.” He remarked.

A soft smile graced Victoria’s lips. “See what?” she asked sweetly.

Myles kissed the top of her head as he sat between her and Hector, a bowl of cereal in front of him. “See you and Hector in the same room…without you trying to kill him”

Hector frowned while looking at his best friend. “Not funny, Myles.”

Myles spread his arms, as if saying, It’s not my fault.

Hector smirked. “Hey Solo, why don’t you go back to your Princess?”

Suddenly, faster than Myles could blink, Victoria had kicked Hector out his chair and had a knife…well, pointed at his bad spot. “Hector Alexander Crane, I’ll say this once and only once: I’M…NOT…A…GODDAMN…PRINCESS!!!”

Myles muttered, “You’re my princess”

Victoria turned to look at her husband and tried to look mad…and failed miserably. She kissed him softly. “That’s true”

Hector cleared his throat. “Umm…Victoria? The knife?”

Myles covered his spreading grin and Victoria tucked her knife in its wrist holster. “Next time, Hector, you’ll be missing a vital organ.” Victoria said, sitting back down.

Hector picked himself up and gestured to Myles. “I’ve got something for you”

Myles raised an eyebrow as he followed him outside. “What?”

Hector smirked and pointed to the driveway. Myles’ mouth dropped open. “Hector…that’s a 400cc Suzuki Bandit!” Myles exclaimed walking over to the black motorbike. “How…when?”

Hector laughed. “Consider it a wedding gift”

Myles looked at his friend. “Anything I should know about?”

Hector grinned and pointed to a button on the handlebars. “That button opens a secret compartment on the side of the bike. The compartment is big enough to hold at least two guns. As for knives…hell, at least five.”

Myles grinned and ran his hand over the bike. “I can’t wait to go for a ride.”

Suddenly, Victoria walked out of the house. “Myles, can you run to the store for me?” she asked. “We need a couple things.” She handed him a list.

Myles nodded enthusiastically. “Of course! I can try out my new bike!”

Victoria smiled and shook her head. “Take this” she muttered, handing him a couple Desert Eagles. “I know about the secret compartment, put these inside. Just in case.”

Myles nodded and kissed her. He then walked over to his new bike, slipped the guns into the compartment, put on the jet black helmet, slid the visor down, and revved the motor. Nodding to Victoria, he backed out of the driveway and sped down the road.

Hector looked at Victoria. “I’ll go with him.” He said jumping onto his own Bandit.

“Why? So you can keep an eye on him, or the other way around?” Victoria asked.

Hector just scowled.

Twenty minutes later, the two boys were inside the supermarket. Myles had a shopping card in front of him and was consulting his list.

“Zucchini?!” he exclaimed, shoving the list into Hector’s face. “I hate that stuff!”

Hector nodded passing the list back. “I hear you man. Ann served me the stuff yesterday. Couldn’t stand it.”

“By the way, how is everything between the two of you?” Myles asked, putting the green vegetable into the cart.

Hector shrugged. “Everything’s good…but…”

Myles raised an eyebrow and stopped the cart. “What?”

Hector sighed. “I don’t know Myles. I love her…but at the same time, I feel like I want something more”

Myles nodded wisely. “Well Hector, your problem is simple. You have…” here Myles slapped his friend upside the head. “Casanova-itis.”

Hector rubbed his head and smirked. “Hey, not my fault the girls love me.”

The two laughed for a while until someone said “Myles College?”

Myles turned around. “Yes?”

The speaker was a white man decked in black, like the people who had tried to kill him in Hawaii. “I have a message for you.”

Myles raised an eyebrow. “What?”

“This.” The man pulled out a gun.

That’s when all hell broke lose.

Myles dived into the adjacent aisle as Hector quickly drew a Polish WIST-94 handgun and shot the man in the chest. Suddenly, three more charged towards them from across the store.

Tossing Myles a Springfield Armory M1911A1, Hector took down the incoming attackers. “Let’s go!” he ordered, hurrying down the aisle with Myles behind him.

The two rounded the corner, and barely dodged machine gun fire from another thug. This time, Myles shot twice, once knocking the gun out of his hands, the second one knocking him off his feet.

The two bolt for the door and then the two female cashiers pulled out Uzis. Hector tackled one while Myles dived behind a candy dispenser.

Bullets crashed against the glass, sending multi-colored gumdrops to the floor. Myles rolled out of his cover and fired three shots, the first two missing, the third killing the assailant.

“Hector, stop getting hanky-panky with that cashier and let’s get out of here!” Myles yelled, shooting a couple more gunman before throwing the gun away: it was empty.

Hector finished knocking out the girl and then ran out of the store with Myles. The two jumped onto their bikes and sped off.

Myles turned to his friend. “That was…”

BANG!

Myles ducked as the hot dog stand next to them exploded. “What the hell…?!” Myles exclaimed, looking behind him. “Aw s***”

Hector looked at him. “What now?”

Myles faced the road again and sped up. “About eight bikers behind us. Two with rocket launchers. The rest with semi-automatic pistols”

Hector swore. “And we’re unarmed.”

“No we’re not” Myles muttered, hitting the button that opened the secret compartment on his bike. He took out the Desert Eagles and tossed one to Hector, who shot two men right off their bikes right when he caught it.

Myles swerved as another rocket whizzed past him. Throwing the bike into a skid, he fired one shot. That shot blew the head off one biker, and made another guy crash into a third, finally making an earth-shattering explosion that took out a fourth.

Hector grinned at his friend and remarked “Nice one”

Myles righted his bike just in time to avoid a bullet. “We’re not out the woods yet” he said as they turned onto Cathedral Street.

Hector turned around and tried to fire off a shot, but his target got him first: his shot his Hector’s bike, sending him into the wall. He was okay, but he needed help.

Myles gritted his teeth fired a shot without looking, and got the pleasing sound of an explosion of a motorbike. Then he cried out as a bullet went into his shoulder.

Myles turned into the next road, almost running over a couple of pedestrians and sending others screaming at the sight of his Desert Eagle. Once straightened out, he turned around and fired a quick shot, swearing when he whizzed past his target. The man behind him was still coming, and he fired a shot in return. Myles swerved out of the way just in time…but the bullet hit a 10 year old girl instead.

That’s it. Myles thought. I’ve had it with you. Turning around again, he fired another shot. The assailant swerved out of the way…

But not in time to avoid the second bullet. It hit him in the head, knocking him off his bike and onto the pavement. The motorbike when careening into the wall and exploded, showering nearby people with shrapnel and metal.

Myles turned around again and put his gun in his pocket, satisfied that he avenged the innocent victim. Then he sighed and slapped his head.

Damn it.

The reason was that he was speeding towards the edge of the Gotham Docks at  120 mph. He was running out of road. And out of time.

Up on the dock house roof, a teenage girl was arming her Alex sniper rifle. She had waited years for this moment, for her bitter enemy to meet his doom. All it took was a little patience.

Looking into her scope, she waited.

Myles had a decision to make, and not a lot of time to make it. He had a minute to decide whether he would plunge into the water or risk death by jumping clear.

Then he saw a boat a little ways out. He grinned. His idea was crazy, but it might work.

Myles poured on more speed and when he reached the edge of the dock, he propelled himself into the air. At the peak of the ascent, he jumped off his bike, which plunged into the water and exploded. But sacrificing his bike allowed him to land feet-first on the boat.

At first, Myles was grinning. Then he was screaming in pain as he fell into the water, two bullets in his back and one in his other shoulder.

The water was murky and deep. But it soothed the pain. Myles allowed himself to relax, but then he felt a sharp pain in his right arm. Looking at it, he saw a knife embedded in it. Looking around, he noticed a diver, dressed in black. Grimly take the knife out of his arm, Myles swam towards his attacker…

And screamed as the diver took a second knife and plunged it into his stomach. Myles tried to force the knife out, but that just made the gash wider and deeper. Myles slashed him opponent across the face, adding more blood to the already wine-colored water.

The diver took the knife out and kicked Myles, breaking a rib and forcing the air out of him. Myles rolled over in the water and kicked out with both feet, hitting the man in the throat.

Next minute, the diver was behind him and strangling him. But Myles could still move his knife. Using it, he stabbed the man in the side, making him releasing him. Myles made a break for the surface…

Only to have the diver grab onto him again and start dragging him down. Myles took one last desperate gamble and tossed the knife at him. It embedded itself in the diver’s head, killing him at last. Kicking his legs free, Myles tiredly swam up to the light.

Up above on the water, Hector and the Chains team had closed down the docks. One idiot had tried to force his way through, but Victor shot him. Right now, the police were arrayed outside, in a standoff with a few of the team members.

Victoria stood next to him, her binoculars sweeping the water. “Do you see him?” he asked her.

Victoria dropped the binoculars, her face white. “No” she whispered.

Ann put a comforting hand on her shoulder. “I’m sure he’s okay”

Victoria blinked a few tears out of her eyes. “We have to keep looking”

Natasha came running up, Callista right behind her. “We have the scuba gear” she told Hector.

Hector was about to ask Natasha to get them when Victoria cried out, pointing at the water.

Hector looked and saw a figure floating.

“Oh God” he muttered and he dived in, pushing down his fear of water. Slowly, he made his way out to his friend.

Another splash behind him. Looking back, Hector saw Victoria and Callista swimming out with him. Within a few minutes, the three of them reached the prone form of Myles.

Myles smiled meekly as he gasped for air. “Sorry…about…the…groceries” he made out.

Victoria kissed him. “Don’t talk” she told him, holding him tight, not caring about the blood. “Save your strength.”

Callista was speaking into her mike, demanding medical help. Myles didn’t care. He looked at Victoria and Hector. “I’m alive” he muttered.

“Just barely” Hector replied, clinging to Callista for support.

Myles grinned softly. “Dude, you swam in the water…to get me?”

“Yeah”

“You’re scared of water”

“I know that”

Myles shook his head and coughed some blood out. “You’re crazy.”

“We know” Callista said, coming over to him. “A med team’s on the way. Just hold on.”

Myles held on to Victoria, and felt Callista put an arm around him. “Umm…Callista…” he muttered.

He heard her chuckle. “Don’t worry Myles, just trying to keep your warm. You’re shivering.”

Myles closed his eyes, wondering who the don’t worry comment was directed to.
